AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

As Ricky Gervais said "just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right". Most rational people would be offended by this, and I'd like to think they voted with their feet by staying well away from this. That would send a message!

Have you ever been to the fringe?!

I'm never going to sign a petition calling for a show I haven't seen to be banned, but I can see why people are upset about it.

Of course AK has every right to speak about her own experience. She is also entitled to monetise it, whether people find it distasteful or not, it's her story to monetise. But she has been telling her story for years now, on many different platforms...podcasts, books, talk show appearances, documentaries, public speaking engagements. At what point does "telling your story" become courting publicity? Does AK genuinely have a passion for stand-up comedy as an art form, or is she simply looking for a new way to monetise her experience and stay in the public eye. After all, you can only keep selling the same story so many times. Either way, I can see why AK's determination to keep her story fresh in the public consciousness is painful for MK's family.

I think it's possible to defend AK's right to freedom of expression, along with the right of artists to make art that makes people uncomfortable, and still be curious about her motives and sympathise with MK's relatives position on the issue.

She probably is motivated, to a greater or lesser extent, by money, and why not? A lot of money has been made off of her, so why shouldn’t she make some herself?

Her family was financially devastated by what happened to her. They spent millions, and were left deep in debt. This wasn’t money they could easily make back. If she can use what she went through to reimburse them and set herself up financially then why not? Good for her tbh.

As I said, she's entitled to monetise her experience. Other people are entitled to feel and express some discomfort around her doing so, especially MK's family.

I think it’s in very poor taste, but as pp said, many things on the Fringe could be that, and many comedians can offend.
I wouldn’t waste my own time or money on it, and I think it tells me about her character, but it’s what made her famous so I guess she is exploiting that.

Exploiting the fact she was arrested for a murder she didnt commit?
This is about HER experience... she's perfectly entitled to tell it.

Are you seriously comparing suffering here? Obviously being wrongly imprisoned is terrible but it is nowhere close to what happened to Meredith and her family. Nowhere close.
Every time Knox does an interview, programme or podcast or show- publicity is created and Meredith’s name is in the media again. Her family see her name in the media again and obviously references to her murder. Whilst I sympathise with Amanda she really needs to be mindful of what the Kercher family go through every single time she brings spotlight to the case. Surely she has done enough now? When will it end?

You don’t have to compare two very different traumas. What Meredith and her family went through does not negate what Amanda Knox and her family experienced. Amanda Knox does not need their approval to deal with what she went through in the way she sees fit to. She doesn’t not owe them silence.

The same media that decries her is the same media that gives her a platform and readily uses her name to generate revenue. Yet it’s only a problem when she profits?

Sure they can. Disagreeing with what someone is saying is not the same thing as denying their right to say it.

She thought she was being a helpful witness at the time, and had no idea she’d go on to being viewed as a prime suspect, and later on probably thought asking for a lawyer would be a sign of guilt. All the housemates were asked to give their account. She was naive but this is where I have sympathy for her, it must have been extremely disorientating to be in a foreign country , thousands of miles from home and suddenly have to face such suspicion and harsh treatment with no guidance or support. She did her best to answer in Italian at first as they did not provide a translator which was ludicrous as she didn’t have enough grasp on the language at the time whatsoever.

Oh totally - I'd have done the exact same thing as her, at her age. You'd just assume that if you've done nothing wrong it'll all get straightened out, woulnd't you? It must have been like a slow moving nightmare.

I’m curious as to why you feel she owes anything to Meredith’s family? They suffered horribly for sure. But so did she through no fault of her own. If she was someone with a duty of care like an investigating officer, I could understand this, but she isn’t and never was.

I was just listening to a podcast where they interviewed someone who was wrongly imprisoned for rape and released after 14 years due to a dna analysis showing it could not be him and identifying the real attacker. It did make me wonder about how the victim would feel is she was listening, but ultimately it was his story to tell. He was respectful and acknowledged her suffering. But he suffered too, through no fault of his own.

You couldn’t make it up.

Nothing in that post makes a of comparison. It's all coming from you.

Those of us who are asserting Amanda's right to speak about her suffering in her own way are generally rejecting the who had it worst model. But if you do want to see the situation that way, I bet you've not been wrongly imprisoned for years and subjected to an international misogynistic circus. Amanda's suffering in that respect is greater than yours and those of the people criticising her for the show in this thread. Therefore as we're comparing, you should be mindful of what's happened to her and defer to her judgement of what's appropriate.

What Meredith went through was worse, for definite.

But why is what Meredith’s siblings went through worse than what Amanda went through? What happened to Amanda happened to her, what happened to Meredith’s siblings happened to Meredith, not them.

Are you going to tell that poster to back off now @ThatJadeLion and then start a thread if the poster has the audacity to respond?

I won't sign the petition as I believe in freedom of speech.

However, she has turned herself into a professional victim.

People are perfectly entitled to start a general discussion prompted by a previous thread or by something they have observed. I didn’t name the thread, identify any poster or invite the original argument on the thread I started.

I have seen many posters being bombarded by people who cannot accept a difference of opinion. it has occasionally happened to me, but it happens to others on AIBU every day,.so that's why I decided to ask the question.

I do hope the inspiration for my separate thread has now passed your approval process.

MrRandomChap seemed unable to back off, accept people have different opinions sent multiple messages, so I just wanted to set the record straight myself. Anyway, I don't wish to derail the thread.. but you asked.

Don't you think it's important to correct lies and untruths? Or would you prefer them to go unchallenged.

You are wrong, unquestionably and unequivocally wrong. Amanda Knox is innocent.

Your opinion that she's guilty is entirely incorrect, completely worthless, and potentially libellous.

Please go away!!! I had many people agree with me. You said your bit and it's boring now. No doubt you'll be back to reiterate the same things you've said over and over... It's absolutely baffling how some people can't accept a difference of opinion. Surprise me please and just move on.

You've used the sympathy reaction to my previous message. Why?

LetMeGoogleThat · 07/08/2026 18:11

Amanda Knox is a complete narcissist, who will spend the rest of her life dinning out on this story. She has zero empathy for Meredith, or her family. They have conducted themselves with grace and such restraint.
