Dishwasher dilemna

For those with dishwashers.
Do you load the dishwasher throughout the day or do you wait until you have a lot to put in all at once?
We have recently bought one and dh is saying that constantly opening the door will cause too much wear and tear.
I hate seeing the dirty dishes on the side and think that it defeats the object of having a dishwasher.
Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

What does he do about kitchen cupboards and the fridge?!!

I guess I would sort of understand it if dishwashers were brand new technology and he was a little sceptical.

But really he’s being utterly ridiculous.

We are having our kitchen done this year and we are going to join the elite two dishwashers club. I can’t wait.

Does he avoid going to the toilet in case he wears out the flush?

Load as you go unless your DS18 who manages to eventually stick stuff on the side (that’s a whole other thread)

We are 27 years into having a dishwasher - think we’re on no 3 (?) - never had a problem with door or hinges through overuse

Rr cutlery - we were perplexed on recent holiday in Airbnb that they had no cutlery holder inside dishwasher until I discovered the “hidden” cutlery tray at top - ingenious

Load as you go ours has been going strong for 15 years!

I was going to ask about the fridge, which I am sure is opened more frequently than the dishwasher. But perhaps the OPs husband gets everything required for the day out of the fridge in the morning, then puts what’s left away at the end of the day to minimise wear on the fridge hinges and seals. And think of the electricity you’d save by not having the fridge light going in and off all the time. At least the dishwasher doesn’t have a light in it 😂

he's bananas leaving it all out. Doesn’t it smell in this heat and/or attract flies. The mess would drive me mad too. Especially in the holidays when the kids are home more.

Load as we go here. These modern machines are built to be opened and closed multiple times. Why would you leave manky dishes on the worktop? Especially in this hot weather – they’ll attract flies and get dry and crusty.If they’re in the machine they won’t get so dry.

To be honest the idea of leaving dishes on the worktop would be a nightmare here due to the cats chancing their luck…

WTAF is he on about?? Does he think there is a set number of times you can open the door until it eventually falls off?

Actually we did have the spring go in one once, but a replacement cost about £7 online and I would have fitted it myself but the legs underneath were all broken so you couldn't pull it in and out. It still worked fine, we just repurposed a loaf tin where the non stick had worn off as a door supporter when it was open, and you had to warn anybody who wasn't expecting it that the door was much heavier than you'd expect.

Load as you go throughout the day. Half the point of having a dishwasher is that it swallows mess throughout the day and it isn't left out on the work surfaces.

I've had dishwashers for over 20 years, doors opened and closed multiple times each day and I have never had a worn out catch or hinge yet. They are pretty heavy duty on that.

Never heard of hinges on appliances giving out. The fridge and our washing machine look massively over engineered.
Have been known to take some things out to re-arrange for maximum load. Even that beats washing up by hand.

I’ve had my dishwasher 19 years and it’s as good as new. So are all the other doors, cupboards and windows in my house

Load as I go. I agree that half the point is so you don't have dirty dishes hanging around

he's feeling threatened. At first he was probably happy that he could stop washing up. Then he felt a little bit redundant. Now he’s worried what other machines you could buy to replace his other roles and how long until he’s not needed at all…

My parents first got a dishwasher in the early 70s - really unusual back then. They replaced it at around the year 2000 and used it til my dad passed away last year. And they never had a door problem in over 50 years.

A dishwasher is basically a cupboard to store dirty crockery, out of sight and out of the way of flies. Once the cupboard is filled, it cleans the crockery for you. That is it's only job. This entails the very heavy door being opened and shut multiple times. The door has been designed and refined over many years to withstand this sort of use.

We leave every door in our house wide open to save wear and tear on the hinges. We have only been burgled 10 or 12 times, but feel that is a small price to pay and can sleep easily in the knowledge that the hinges should last well into the next millennium. 😴

I load as I go, wouldn’t let it all pile up so I only opened the door once a day. Bizarre.
