AIBU to think Netflix has gone downhill lately?

Is it just me or has Netflix gone right down hill? Not seen anything on there I fancy watching for months. Dont know why we bother keeping it! It’s all foreign dubbed films and crime documentaries

I know lots of people won’t like it but the BBC is far superior imo. Ann Droid was worth the licence fee alone

I’ve just finished Alma’s not Normal on the iPlayer. So good and very touching.

Netflix has the same content regardless of tier.

'You can stream, download and play thousands of programmes, films and games. The vast majority of TV programmes and films are available on an advert-supported plan, but due to licensing restrictions a small number are unavailable. These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.'

Direct from the netflix website. And there's more than a small number.

I love foreign films

but generally Netflix has gone down the pan a lot

just cancelled this month

jay55 · 01/08/2026 15:04

I was close to cancelling but am moving to sky at my new place and it’s included, so I’ll be saving on the subscription at least

Moroccogill · 01/08/2026 15:08

I thought this last night! Everything is dubbed and looks really cheaply made. I actually do like their true crime documentaries though.

fishbowlee · 01/08/2026 15:31

@TheOpalReaderI didn’t know that, I googled before I dropped down to the cheaper tier & It didn’t tell me that. I have never come across a lock icon though & googling it now it tells me it’s 1-2% of content and the content tends to be 5plus years old.

Seems to be more of an issue in the US

fishbowlee · 01/08/2026 15:38

I do find the algorithm rubbish and often only find things by googling

motherhoodisntfortheweak · 01/08/2026 15:39

Yes I agree not worth the money

Netcurtainnelly · 01/08/2026 17:16

Sky are trying to get subscribers. I think I saw 6 months free lol.🤔😲😜

RowsOfFlowers · 01/08/2026 17:19

apple tv much better atmmm

BebbanburgIsMine · 01/08/2026 17:19

The Last Kingdom is on Netflix!

Worth it for that alone, the best tv series ever.

It has Vikings and Vikings Valhalla too, I have the DVD sets of all three series, but still like to watch them on Netflix.

Agree OP, I’m thinking about cancelling. Haven’t watched anything ‘new’ that is good in ages. There is a lot of old good stuff on there but it’s not worth the money just to access old stuff.

AgnesMcDoo · 01/08/2026 17:37

I struggle to find things I want to watch on it

Letsgoforaskip · 01/08/2026 17:47

@LuckyHazelFox I 100% agree about Yellowstone. I know a lot of people who love it but I tried twice and it is definitely not for me.

Slimtoddy · 01/08/2026 18:01

I do think there are probably loads of things to watch but they are hard to find. That's why people come on here asking for recommendations. I am enjoying Rescue Me on Netflix at the moment. But when there are 7 seasons it's easy to get fatigued watching it so I have to pace myself.

utahsainthood · 01/08/2026 23:34

Sharmelbreak · 31/07/2026 19:31

There’s a lot of mediocre, middle-of-the-road filler. I read recently that Netflix asks writers to “dumb down” scripts and constantly recap plots on the assumption that most people are watching over the top of their phone. To be fair, they’re probably right.

How depressing!

ive been thinking for ages to stop our subscription. I feel like I watched loads of it over the lockdowns and there was loads of good quality stuff at the beginning, and hardly anything in the years since.

Sassysangria2201 · 02/08/2026 09:58

Now that I’ve watched Vikings, Valhalla and the Last Kingdom I’m getting rid of it.

The straw that broke the camels back was that they now serve up questionable YouTube slop targeted at kids. If I wanted my kids to watch young people being exploited by their parents to a soundtrack of screeching and shouting I’d just give them YouTube.

i don’t know Netflix thinks I’d want to pay to see generic YouTube content, or show it to my kids, but that was it for me. The lack of anything engaging was already starting to grate though.

It’s fantastic isn’t it!

The Last Kingdom will always be my favourite, but I think I prefer Valhalla to Vikings.

I tend to only have one streaming service active at any time. I usually have one for about 3 or 6 months, binge watch everything I fancy and then switch to one of the others for the same period of time. Buy the time I cycle through there's usually new stuff to watch.

I have just realised this is the way to go. I cancelled Netflix at the end of June, having not found anything I wanted to watch for months. I have checked and there is still nothing 🤷‍♀️ I just cancelled HBO Max, as after The Pitt and the odd other thing, there is nothing on there either. DH cancelled Prime in May. We got sick of seeing something we fancied, only to find there was an additional charge to watch it! We have Disney Plus included with my bank account. There is the odd thing on there, but not enough to pay for it.

I’m considering trying Paramount Plus. Anyone here have it? Any good?

AuntieBiotics · 31/07/2026 19:22

Subtitled is not the same as dubbed....

Imagine being so parochial as to only ever watch things in English and then complain that there's nothing on Netflix.

I’m happy to watch a foreign programme with subtitles, but I can’t get away with dubbing. It just distracts me.

I started a thread a little while ago about how rubbish netflix is and all the crime dramas. Some smartiepants then informed me that I wasn't searching properly and there's some sort of secret menu that unlocks lots of exciting content 🙄 only there isn't a secret menu and it's all rubbish.

Has anyone also noticed that alongside the crime, the programmes are all full of murder and abuse of women? Woman gets stalked, woman gets kidnapped, woman gets murdered etc.

There isn't a secret menu, but you do need to get off your Home page and show some initiative.
