AIBU to find all-grey house interiors really depressing?

Why are so many houses on the market all grey? Grey floors, grey fixings, grey carpets, grey kitchens and grey bathrooms. So depressing.

We bought a house painted throughout in that hideous grey. So ugly.
It took us gallons of paint to get rid of it. However, the house looks significantly bigger, brighter and more cheerful!

About a year ago this was done at least 2 or 3 times per week 😁

I can't say I really have a interior colour preference for other people's houses, but I'm not sure anyone else's choices would make me depressed.

Sorry about that! I wasn’t on much a year ago and I wasn’t house hunting. I guess it’s when it is new flooring, carpet and curtains that are all grey in a recently done up house you feel you’re paying the premium for the house being clean and newly done without it having colour, so you have to start again. Puts me off really otherwise nice houses.

You won't pay a premium for a house done out in grey. It's a buyer's market. Offer lower, that's what we did. Then paint it pleasant colours.

I'm not saying this is your particular intention but I always suspected these threads were started just to be mean, and to make people feel that little bit unhappier if they have grey decor.

Some people just like it. If DH had his way, our entire house would be grey, literally everything. He doesn’t, so it’s not.

I don’t mean to be mean. It’s just so common - I see it in so many houses.

It's fashion, first we had changing rooms with bright colours, then homes under the hammer with magnolia everywhere, and now we have grey because magnolia sucks

I love grey, always have done since my grey and pink bedroom in the eighties.
I don’t like the Mrs Hinch style everything grey houses but I wouldn’t let decor put me off buying a house. Paint is relatively cheap and most houses need repainting once the previous owner has taken furniture etc anyway.

You're not being mean, just observant! It's not to your taste, which is fine.
If you find the right house in the right location, that's the priority. Colours are changeable!

Yes, absolutely. That's what we did. Easily remedied with paint. The only room that was a bit of a problem was the bathroom with the dark grey bathroom tiles, that took longer, but we've got rid of them now.

I mean, it’s all just trends isn’t it. And grey is making its way out now but a lot of people will still opt for it. What I will say though is the use of grey seems to used to a greater extent than any other trend.

I remember 20 odd years when brown was the “in” colour. We had it all over the walls and sooo many brown accessories. it seems to be making its way back now 😬

Hard to change some things though. My house has grey flooring and grey kitchen.
I hated it when it became fashionable 25 years ago. Can still remember my very fashionable friend putting grey tiles in his bathroom.
I like cream walls and never had a problem with magnolia. I expect everyone thinks I’m frumpy and wrong. That’s the beauty of personal taste.
There was one absolute gem on Rightmove that actually looked like the photos were in black and white as it was 100% grey everywhere.
I do find this fascinating and don’t mind another thread about it. Really interesting how trends happen.

Grey is tedious, yes. But black units in kitchens are truly the worst. Especially ceiling height black cupboards everywhere in there, and a black fridge to match. A horror of light-vacuuming doom for 3/4 of a British year.

It was a (horrible) trend.
I don't follow trends and instead decorate in colours that I like.

We've recently been house-hunting and you're right, OP it's everywhere! Horses for courses though, it's not to my taste but clearly a lot of people like it.

you need to be really careful with what shade of grey IMO

I find magnolia quite cold and unwelcoming, but grey i find warm and conforting. Everyone is different. I have grey walls but colour everywhere else.

I really want to colour drench my bedroom burgundy but i am terrified 😂

Paints can be changed of course but it feels so wasteful to rip up a grey wood floor which has clearly only been down for a year or so.

We have wholly exterior grey as well. 😂

Someone locally has taken a lovely detached 1950s country house, boarded it and painted the whole thing institutional grey, with grey garages and grey fences. It looks like a Borstal.

I'm hoping someone with better taste buys it and restores order because it is a truly depressing prospect, and such a sad sight.

I know. Maybe cover it? You'll find a way. If it's a good house, it's worth it. If you think it's going to be overwhelming, maybe look elsewhere.

That really is awful. What a shame.
