Why are so many houses on the market all grey? Grey floors, grey fixings, grey carpets, grey kitchens and grey bathrooms. So depressing.

you need to be really careful with what shade of grey IMO

I looked up east facing facing greys, west facing greys, true greys etc 😵‍💫

I find magnolia quite cold and unwelcoming, but grey i find warm and conforting. Everyone is different. I have grey walls but colour everywhere else.

I really want to colour drench my bedroom burgundy but i am terrified 😂

Go for it! 😄

cramptramp · 30/07/2026 18:37

You don’t need to live in one.

xOlive · 30/07/2026 18:41

I have all grey flooring, I didn’t know what the hell else to pick to cope with young kids and pets 😭
Currently all white walls while I fight my 13 personalities on how to decorate.

Goldengirl123 · 30/07/2026 18:42

Me too

jackiesgirl · 30/07/2026 18:43

People who decorated their house like that when they moved in 10 years ago are starting to sell, so there’s an influx of them. We sold our grey house last year and loads we viewed were the same.

rwalker · 30/07/2026 18:44

I love grey but like any else needs to be in moderation
it’s a trend so where as I’m happy to paint everything and anything grey
bug purchases like sofa and flooring I keep away from grey

Tollington · 30/07/2026 18:50

You need to see past it if you’re viewing houses

Sonolanona · 30/07/2026 19:01

I have a very pale grey...just off white really, in my hall landing and stairs and in the living room. White in the kitchen and bedrooms. I like it, it's slightly warmer than bright white. Oh and a new grey kitchen , but very pale flooring.
However my sofas are super bright (one deep yellow, one coral, with a cerise footstool, and the other sofa is matchwork multi!) so the house is anything but grey! Curtains are cerise... we like bright!

That sounds gorgeous! I love those colours on sofas.

Dont worry OP - when i become king of the world i am making grey anything totally illegal !! I hate it - so very depressing.

BauhausOfEliott · 30/07/2026 20:26

Do people still have entirely grey houses? I thought that stopped being a thing about ten years ago.

Either way, I really can’t bring myself to be cross about other people’s houses. People decorate their homes for themselves, not to please people who don’t live there.

I love so-called ‘millennial green’. Always have, ever since I saw it as a kid in a building that hadn’t been decorated since around 1930.

Paints can be changed of course but it feels so wasteful to rip up a grey wood floor which has clearly only been down for a year or so.

Edited

One grey thing in a room is hardly the same as having everything grey, though. A grey floor with everything else painted in whatever colours you like will look fine; it’s basically just one neutral thing in an entire room.

NotaMumYet9323 · 30/07/2026 20:36

You see it on Instagram when people buy new builds and leave everything beige or grey, even the furniture and decor, seems to be the in thing for some reason.

Rather have my 1930s house with it's character and personality!

Goditsmemargaret · 30/07/2026 20:37

Yes I always hated it. Imagine wanting to live in a grey world.

I know ...yuk

RaininSummer · 30/07/2026 20:46

I really like grey as it goes with almost any other colour.

Turnedtochaos · 30/07/2026 20:46

I don’t mind a bit of grey but my NDN have taken it to the next level.

Grey windows, door, driveway, fences, sheds…You name it it’s grey!

I really like grey as it goes with almost any other colour.

...but mostly... more grey!

TeenLifeMum · 30/07/2026 20:50

We bought our current house and is was a full magnolia place but I liked the layout. We’ve been gradually decorating. I’m going for grey in the bathroom because I like it but the rest of the house is not grey so I think it’ll be fine… not doing it up to sell anyway.

Culpeper · 30/07/2026 20:52

You must be looking at very dated houses in terms of decor. The all grey look hasn’t been trendy for years now.

EmptyInTheValley · 30/07/2026 20:54

Not unreasonable. It has even put me off watching Homes Under the Hammer.

Ibi · 30/07/2026 20:57

I’m not sure if it’s a location thing, but where I’m looking it’s all colour drenching in dark blues or greens. I’ve not seen any grey at all! I think light grey would be much easier to paint over than navy blue.

allmycats · 30/07/2026 21:04

It’s only paint that you can change to your taste. Floors can have rugs on them.
If you can’t afford to repaint them you really can’t afford to move.

VictoriaEra · 30/07/2026 21:15

Op. You’re completely correct. It was depressing even when it was fashionable.

Buscobel · 30/07/2026 21:29

It’s simply decoration taste, which is different for everyone.

I don’t like motivational statements on walls, but some people do. People who insist on ‘character’ in a house, but don’t retain the features that give the character annoy me, but it’s their choice.

It would be strange if we all liked the same thing. Tastes change, styles change, people change.
