AIBU to find all-grey house interiors really depressing?

Why are so many houses on the market all grey? Grey floors, grey fixings, grey carpets, grey kitchens and grey bathrooms. So depressing.

I was going to say exactly the same thing - the plague that is now grey windows and grey exterior paint. Looks like a prison, and very costly to put right. I wouldn’t buy a house like this. At least the inside would be relatively cheap to fix.

The worst is grey exteriors, the houses look like prisons. Awful, depressing particularly in winter.

Love grey but dislike any house that has a uniform colours scheme throughout, regardless of the colour. So would hate a uniform grey house as much as a uniform cream one.

We have multiple rooms with grey and several with creams as the base; the hallway is wood/cream but with a natural carpet and grey trim on the stair runner/landing so that whether you are going into a grey or cream room it doesn’t jar. And in each room, I have a contrasting accent colour so one grey bedroom is paired with wine/burgundy bed throws etc the other with mustard yellow/golds. My lounge is a blend of grey, yellows and cream to bring all the base colours together. The kitchen area, off the lounge, is oak, cream and dark grey granite so hopefully also blends.

I think it avoids the hard coldness of grey and the blandness of cream. Appreciate it’s not everyone else's taste, though.

I HATE it too OP. What depresses me most is when a house has been newly renovated - the layout is just what we want, so is the location, but everything is grey: faux marble grey bathroom tiling and kitchen worktops, grey fake wood floors, thick grey carpets, huge long grey radiators that climb up the walls. it's so bleak and depressing and I'd want to rip it all out and start from scratch but the price reflects that it has already been done up.

Yes- I keep an eye on what’s available in an area I’d like. A passable house has been sitting on the site for months. The pictures look like they’ve been taken in monochrome. Everything is grey or black. Even crushed grey velvet furniture and bedding. So tacky and depressing. They’d have shifted that house by now if they’d even repainted a bit.

Panelling… dust traps
Those big wall monstrosities with shelving & Tv
£1000 coffee machines… Nescafé every time
wavy edged trays…smell of B&M Bargains
Theyve all had their day… thank god!

Once you paint, put your own furniture in and get some rugs down you’ll barely notice it.

Wish it was just paint though. As others have said. It’s rendering, flooring, carpets, window frames, kitchens, tiles. Even fences and outhouses.
Never understood how cream could ever go out of fashion. It’s light neutral. White with warmth. Fresh and clean. How did we start choosing the colour of damp?
As an oldie I’ve lived through a rainbow of fashions. I loved the terracotta phase in the early 2000s. It’s all designed to keep us spending and changing stuff anyway. So I’ll live with the acres of grey polypropylene carpet I inherited.

I'm wondering what the next fad is - plater pink?

Grey and White feels cold and clinical.
I've spent far too long trying to decide what to paint my house so it's not the next outdated fad if I have to move in a few years.

DH has a friend whose mum bought a really pretty semi-rural detached house for 600k in 2022, ripped it down, replaced it with a fugly box that cost a further 500k to build and kitted the whole lot out in grey. It's recently been valued at 900k max 😆

Years ago we painted the hall of our victorian house bright yellow and what my dad called 'battleship grey', but in my defence I was trying to replicate a 'print room' effect as I also cut out loads of black/white prints which I then pasted onto the wall.

Pale grey is much better than bright colours (no) or the old stand by of Magnolia.

I’m house hunting and if the walls are all painted grey that’s obviously not a problem, it’s when the seller has spent money putting in a brand new grey kitchen, carpets, and white and grey marble effect plastic bathroom wall panels that it puts me off because it would be a terrible waste to rip it all out and throw it in a skip.

Warm neutrals are the way forward - sand, beige, plaster etc

Then get all white/cream interiors.

What I don’t like is when the dreary grey , white , cream decor is in the DC’s room(s). Could the DC escape this?

Is someone forcing you to have a grey house?

It’s an old trend now. I follow lots of instagram accounts doing home Reno and nobody is using all grey (except maybe the landlords on homes under the hammer)

I have a lovely neighbour who admits she has an aversion to brighter colours, even in clothing. Everything is a shade of grey, the kitchen cupboards, flooring, walls, sofas, bathroom tiles, even the driveway is grey block paving. I call her Mrs 50 shades of grey.

My house walls are firstly painted white, then I choose a wall for a pop of colour and bring texture in with furnishings. I have another neighbour who’s house is different shades of cream and white, it’s beautiful but too sterile for me. We’re all so different, I’m sure they wouldn’t like my house, especially with the loud colours on accent walls. The lounge/diner has chartreuse on the wrap around chimney breast, I’ve used this on a wall in the hallway as well. One bedroom has mid teal on the wall behind the bed and the guest bedroom has a rich saffron on the wall behind the bed 😎

Other home interior things I don't like:
. Unnecessary cushions on the bed. Why? They get chucked on the floor when going to bed. My friend's sister broke her ankle by tripping up on these when visiting the loo in the middle of the night. She got rid of these cushions afterwards.

. Stairs with open risers, no sides and no handrail. My visual condition doesn't help

. Sun lanterns. I wonder how many people who had these fitted in their kitchens regretted this in the hot weather?

. High gloss kitchen cupboards and drawer fronts. Just attracts fingermarks, spray marks from cooking etc

My rooms are all decorated with Dulux Natural Hessian. It's a warm looking neutral colour which goes with any colour. Lounge/diner - my accessories are browns and creams. Bedroom - pinks, purples and blue. 2nd bedroom (study) greens.

I follow a lot of maximalist and trendy 'The Modern House' type insta accounts but I don't have the panache to pull them off. It's a fine line between crap and souless with the above.

My house is very griege (with the ocasional leopars print). Mainly beige walls and grey carpet. I have a grey kitchen too and it's new. I find it calming plus our house is tiny and all the rooms being somewhat similar and light make it seem a little more spacious.

Stairs treads is what gets me. Why make your life difficult with dust collectors like those?!

Have colour drenched in plaster pink/neutral - no grey tones.
Youngest son is still insisting the almond coloured bedroom door is white!

ours too! until perimenopause he had his way and everything was a dull, miserable grey. now I'm in my 'fuck it' era, I buy things I like and we have pink sofas, giraffe lamps and green wallpaper. sadly we still have grey curtains and carpets as they're too new to replace.

Just grey in general. I was looking for an EV car last week and most of those are grey too.
