AIBU to be annoyed that supermarkets are adding cheese to everything?

Why is it that supermarkets have decided to put cheese in bloody everything? Once upon a time, a salmon en croute was just in a white wine sauce; now you can't find one without cheese in the sauce.

Sainsbury's added cheese to several ready meals, such as chicken arrabbiata, so had to switch to Tesco for when I wanted that and a couple of other ready meals for when I don't have time to cook or I've run out of batch cooked stuff.

Today, I really fancied a chicken arrabbiata having been in a car accident last night, aching all over, tired and grumpy, and really don't want to cook tonight. Guess what? Tesco have also now added cheese to it.

Bad enough being lactose intolerant without supermarkets making things even more difficult. And some people just don't like cheese at all, or don't like melted cheese (I mean, cottage pie with cheese on top??).

Why not leave things as they were? If you want cheese, you can just sprinkle it on yourself.

The late Mr Lakie hated cheese in its natural form, but bloody loved it melted or in a sauce.

That makes no sense to me at all.

Texture. DS1 is the same, though no to the sauce. White or yellow runny foods disgust him (he's autistic)

Have you ever tried lactase pills? They have changed my life!

Sadly they don't work for me. You have to digest them at the right time for them to work - if you take PPIs or have high/low stomach acid or other digestive issues that interfere with the speed you digest them at the enzyme isn't in the right place at the right time. I do buy milkaid drops and add them to milk, cream etc - they convert the lactose to other sugars - then make my own butter and soft cheeses, but that's a bit of a faff! I'm glad they work for you, hoping for better results when I'm not on PPIs anymore.

No, it isn't standard. Avocado, lime, salt and the veggie bits with coriander.

And some jalapeño!

Ihsk · 31/07/2026 20:24

I love cheese but there is no need to put into every dish.

But can we see cheese without any fruit? How to ruin cheese.

Oh no, that is such a shame. I was just asking as I'm amazed at the numbers of lactose intolerant people who don't seem to have heard of them.

Hope when you are not on PPIs any more that they work for you. They've made eating other people's food/restaurant food/ready made food such a wonderfully stress-free experience for me! No need to guess if they just randomly chucked a little bit of milk or cream in the sauce etc and no need to be trapped on the loo for hours afterwards.

I must say that I am glad that my lactose intolerance only got really bad in the last five years. At least we can buy lactose free milk and cream these days if needed.

BlueDillieDillie · 31/07/2026 21:42

They have reduced salt after for health reasons. So they add cheese to give food flavour.
I like cheese but I don't want cheap industrial not quite cheese running like a thread through every food.

I've had success with the chewable milkaid, though I have to take a big dose of them. I can at least enjoy a CTM, now, albeit slightly vanilla or raspberry flavoured. Capsules don't seem to work so well for me.

Doesn't help with cheese though. That's the stuff of pukey migraines.

RedFaerieBoots · 31/07/2026 23:01

I feel your pain. I'm allergic to bell peppers (cooked uncooked and all colours). Absolutely fine with all other peppers, nightshades so likely something specific to the bell pepper itself.

Anyways they are cropping up in so many things.

Steak with peppercorns used to be safe now have bell peppers mixed in with peppercorns

Tesco insists on using tomato wraps which includes bell peppers. So filling is safe but wraps will make unwell. So many lunch pastas have peppers added for bulk etc.

Even previous safe stuff can change and they don't have to say new recipe because its not one of the main 14.

Fiancé hates peppers as does my dad so they get it. Not everyone loves the evil things of death

Anyways I feel your pain

See this as a fantastic opportunity to break the habit of buying ready meals ever again..

You are welcome.

The OP had already said that she'd been in a car accident, wasn't feeling great and therefore wanted something easy and convenient. I knew it wouldn't be long before the pious ready meal haters appeared.

SourdoughSally · 31/07/2026 23:42

Stop buying UPF ready meals. Job done.

If you can't be arsed to read my original and subsequent posts, or others from people who have disabilities, just sod off with your holier than thou crap.

In fairness I did miss the sentence about the car accident. It was a long post. But regardless, I always have at least 7 days worth of meals, both dinners and lunches in the freezer. That's the minimum. I usually have enough for 2-3 weeks on average. Plus there are always 'emergency meals' you can whistle up in a few minutes from things in the pantry/fridge that only take a few minutes and don't require and thought or planning.

I am also covered then if I am unwell, have an injury or just CBA (we all have days like that)

there are always 'emergency meals' you can whistle up in a few minutes

I'm sure you mean "rustle up", clever clogs.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/08/2026 09:19

Why on earth do those who 'never' eat ready meals feel it necessary to get on their high horses about this? We all know ready meals aren't great. We all know that there are 'quick meals' that can be made from wholesome ingredients in a flash. We know this. But your constant insistence that you, personally, would never let a ready meal past your lips, does not change the fact that other people do.

Telling us all that you cook every single thing from scratch is not going to make one single person clasp their hand to their forehead exclaiming 'oh, of course! I shall never eat another microwaved Co Op Beef Casserole with Dumplings again! Thank you for showing me the error of my ways!' It just makes you look a bit smug.

Different strokes for different folks.

CrushingOnRubies · 01/08/2026 09:25

Why do most supermarket pizzas now have some sort of spice added to it? Whether it’s a spicy chorizo type sausage, or chilli or some other spicy ingredient. My tolerance of spicy things is getting better but when I want a pizza I tend to want bland. So have to go for ham & pineapple which is ok but not the most inspired choice.

SandwichSuperstar · 30/07/2026 16:12

YANBU, even though I like cheese.

I feel your pain because I feel exactly the same about them dumping bloody mint all over lamb.

I feel your pain. I absolutely detest mint and it’s so hard to find lamb products without it in.

CatVester · 31/07/2026 17:38

No, but it has cream in it which is much worse than cheese for the lactose intolerant!

Well yes, but the 'butter; in the name is a bit of a clue there. It doesn't have cheese in it though! (I was commenting for the cheese haters, rather than the lactose-intolerant).

People love to ignore what you’ve said just to they can get on their high horse to belittle you about something.

Anyway, I’m with you. I’m not a cheese fan and find they shove it in wherever they can. I’d imagine it’s a cheap ingredient so they can probably bulk out and make it look like more for less cost. Yuk.

See also nuts. I’m finding nuts are being chucked into everything. My favourite restaurant used to do the most delicious chocolate brownie dessert I’ve ever had and then they changed it and stuck a load of nuts through it. Gutted.

Butter has practically no lactose. And the OP is lactose intolerant. So I think it's fair to point out that while Butter Chicken contains no cheese, it most certainly does contain quite a lot of lactose in modern recipes (the original had a lot less, probably because there is a lot of lactose intolerance in India).

ThisSunnyBea · 01/08/2026 13:25

Agree as I’m in the cheese is disgusting camp. Even things like hula hoops have cheese powder added (why!) they never used to I have to read everything

Some of the Lidl BBQ range have lamb without mint. lamb harissa kebabs. I have taken them off the sticks, split them into three and shape into meatballs. Serve with a tomato sauce and couscous

Ah I see. I am fortunate enough to be able to tolerate any amount of lactose (and cheese), so I was really offering the butter chicken as a ready meal which contains no cheese to all those cheese haters, rather than as a lactose-free meal for the OP.

I always get a margarita and then add my own toppings as nowhere has my favourite.

Last time I looked they were putting cream cheese in guacamole. Completely incomprehensible to me.

Really? Oh god another think to check ingredients for and avoid
