AIBU to be annoyed that supermarkets are adding cheese to everything?

Why is it that supermarkets have decided to put cheese in bloody everything? Once upon a time, a salmon en croute was just in a white wine sauce; now you can't find one without cheese in the sauce.

Sainsbury's added cheese to several ready meals, such as chicken arrabbiata, so had to switch to Tesco for when I wanted that and a couple of other ready meals for when I don't have time to cook or I've run out of batch cooked stuff.

Today, I really fancied a chicken arrabbiata having been in a car accident last night, aching all over, tired and grumpy, and really don't want to cook tonight. Guess what? Tesco have also now added cheese to it.

Bad enough being lactose intolerant without supermarkets making things even more difficult. And some people just don't like cheese at all, or don't like melted cheese (I mean, cottage pie with cheese on top??).

Why not leave things as they were? If you want cheese, you can just sprinkle it on yourself.

Oh yeah, another one: cream cheese in sushi. Absolute bollocks.

OnlyUsername · 30/07/2026 17:41

It's mayo for me. Stop putting in every bloody sandwich. Every catered work lunch - mayo. 9/10 prepacked sandwiches and boxes salads at airports/stations? Mayo. The bread's dry? Use better bread!

Last time I looked they were putting cream cheese in guacamole. Completely incomprehensible to me.

I That’s a pretty standard ingredient in guacamole, isn’t it? at least it’s how I’ve made it for 30 odd years, with some garlic and a bit of lime juice.

No, it isn't standard. Avocado, lime, salt and the veggie bits with coriander.

Don't get me started on mayo with dairy in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JasmineFontana · 30/07/2026 17:50

The m&s chicken arrabbiata doesn't have cheese, FYI 😊 and it's only £3.50ish I think!

DysmalRadius · 30/07/2026 17:52

Twisters used to be our top dairy free ice lolly choice - now they've put milk in them!! 😠

Does mayo have dairy in it?

LaughingLemur · 30/07/2026 17:53

Sympathy, I have a DD allergic to soya and it's in everything. Drives me crazy.

It shouldn't!

But next time you're in the supermarket, have a look at the ingredients list...

StylesSluttyShorts · 30/07/2026 17:58

YABU.
Cheese is the best food ever, it should be in everything.

DaffodilValley · 30/07/2026 18:00

I love cheese but you have my sympathy. I’m allergic to alliums and have the same problem with them being added to random and ridiculous things for no good reason.

If you’re putting cream cheese in it’s not guacamole. Doing it wrong for decades doesn’t make it right. The only defence is that 30 years ago we were less aware about other countries’ cuisine and gaily made our own approximations. It’s a Mexican recipe. NO dairy. Garlic is personal choice but probably shouldn’t be in it.

Avocado, coriander, onion, lemon or lime juice, salt, tomato and jalapeño, though I leave jalapeño out sometimes.

This is why everyone is so fat..... Sorry, but so much additional stuff in ready meals, really isn't necessary. Even home made meals.... Lasagna shouldn't have cheddar in it, just saying.

My biggest issue, I'm with you OP, is cheese with fish. Just why? Why put cheese in the middle of a fish cake, what's wrong with just fish in a fish cake. The clue is in the name. Melting middles just make me want to puke.

I love cheese, but cheese on it's own, to savour after a meal. Appreciate it with some fresh bread or crackers.

Cheese in or on things (parmesan aside), is just not nice.

Given the sales, and loads of posters in this thread, millions of us disagree that cheese on everything isn’t nice!

I agree with the first sentence of this.

For me, I loathe chilli, and it seems to be unnecessarily in so many things! Away with the chilli 🌶️ 🤢

So much this! Even crisps - all the decent ones now only seem to come in 'extra hot' varieties. I don't WANT extra hot! I want normally cold!

And can I put in a word for cinnamon being in every single dish that has ever been anywhere near an apple? I like apple. I do not like cinnamon.

I just looked at my hellmanns and Heinz. No dairy.

Meadowfinch · 30/07/2026 18:11

They add far worse than cheese. If you want ypur family to eat healthy food, cook from scratch.

Supermarket pre-prepared food is increasingly cheap sugar & fat-laden rubbish.

GarlicAnywhere · 30/07/2026 18:16

Another frustrated dairy intolerant here. I flippin' love cheese - but, if I choose to eat it, I'm knowingly choosing a week of unpleasant after-effects. Might be worth it for an award-winning fromage at Christmas. Definitely isn't for a midweek ready meal with superfluous ingredients.

And PÂTÉ! Over the years, more and more varieties turn up with cream or whey in them. It used to be only about half of them, now Sainsbury's have no dairy-free pâtés and neither do Morrison's. Aldi sometimes has one or two. The Co-Op, my other local supermarket, puts dairy in bloody everything. If I can't have cheese on my toast, I really want pâté!

Also sympathising with the gluten avoiders. You're right, it's used for thickening where it should have been cornflour.

Hrrrrmph.

This is fair enough but there's nothing here to indicate that people are eating wall to wall ready meals. Cooking from scratch is great, but there's always that one day where you don't want to/can't or don't have time.

Lidl's own brand (Batts) which my wife lathers on pretty much everything and is all she'll eat. Hellmans is more than three times the price.

LittleGreenDuck · 30/07/2026 18:38

Now I’ve had to go to the fridge and chop a chunk of cheese to nibble on.

Bigtom · 30/07/2026 18:40

I have never had this problem because I have never bought a ready meal. If you don’t like what’s on offer, just cook your own meals. Problem solved Confused

Yeah OP, go get your lazy self in the kitchen. After all its not like you've been in a car accident and are in pain or experiencing delayed shock or anything!
