AIBU to be annoyed that supermarkets are adding cheese to everything?

Why is it that supermarkets have decided to put cheese in bloody everything? Once upon a time, a salmon en croute was just in a white wine sauce; now you can't find one without cheese in the sauce.

Sainsbury's added cheese to several ready meals, such as chicken arrabbiata, so had to switch to Tesco for when I wanted that and a couple of other ready meals for when I don't have time to cook or I've run out of batch cooked stuff.

Today, I really fancied a chicken arrabbiata having been in a car accident last night, aching all over, tired and grumpy, and really don't want to cook tonight. Guess what? Tesco have also now added cheese to it.

Bad enough being lactose intolerant without supermarkets making things even more difficult. And some people just don't like cheese at all, or don't like melted cheese (I mean, cottage pie with cheese on top??).

Why not leave things as they were? If you want cheese, you can just sprinkle it on yourself.

I have never had this problem because I have never bought a ready meal. If you don’t like what’s on offer, just cook your own meals. Problem solved Confused

I am not wishing a car accident on you, but if you were in a car accident then please come back and tell us what you cooked for dinner the following day when you were still aching.

Yabvvu everything and I mean everything is better with cheese

I often cook double, so have lots of meals ready to defrost in the freezer Smile

I hate cheese. I mean really hate it so I totally agree. When people find out I hate cheese they look at me like I have two heads!!

Hs you’re not alone. I hate cheese too.

BambinaCucina · 30/07/2026 19:07

Well I love cheese, so I'm not complaining.

But neither do I think you're being unreasonable. It does make it somewhat problematic when you're intolerant!

YANBU, even though I like cheese.

I feel your pain because I feel exactly the same about them dumping bloody mint all over lamb.

I’m with you on the mint. It’s not just lamb though. I can’t order garlic sauce from takeaways as they keep randomly adding mint to it (one place here does a garlic sauce but also a garlic and herb sauce which is the minty one, but they so often send the wrong one). Anything with cous cous is always a risk too. My favourite curry is a passanda but some places seem to add mint to the marinade on the meat too, even if it’s chicken.

I once ordered a delicious sounding sea bass risotto in a local seafood restaurant. The menu mentioned mango in the dish. It didn’t mention that they’d obviously marinated the mango in mint making most of the dish totally inedible for me.

Could be worse could be chilli 🌶️ cheese🧀 sauce!
I agree with you OP, if people want cheese they can add in themselves ditto for blooming chillies which seem to be in fashion again like the late 90s when everything seemed to have chillies added.

Agree,
Everything has chilli in it these days !

I found it very annoying when my babies had CMPA and I wanted easy meals to heat up & eat while breastfeeding!

JustSetFireToIt · 30/07/2026 19:20

YANBU but I feel exactly the same about them adding curry and chilli to everything. Vile, especially when you’re not expecting it.

Adding bloody sweetcorn to everything should be indictable. I can’t eat it.

I agree with the first sentence of this.

For me, I loathe chilli, and it seems to be unnecessarily in so many things! Away with the chilli 🌶️ 🤢

I hate chilli too! Why oh why is it in so
many products? My palette can’t cope with it.

As for cheese, I like it but can empathize with those who hate or can’t tolerate it.

Oh yes! Chilli is in everything. Ruins everything 😪

Does mayo have dairy in it?

My DD has a dairy allergy and I have found it’s mostly the light mayonnaise that does, I assume to make it more creamy? The full fat ones don’t seem to so we just buy that.
I find it is an issue with kids options in cafes (the sort with pre packaged options) where they almost all seem to have cheese in! Never had an issue in a more sit down restaurant or a cafe where they are individually making things as people always seem to be happy to do it without the cheese even if that’s what’s on the menu.
Today we had afternoon tea (special occasion) and I knew they couldn’t do the afternoon tea dairy free, totally understood that as it’s basically butter and cream! They worked with me to find something DD would be happy with and wouldn’t feel she was missing out over.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 30/07/2026 19:25

I'm with you on this one, OP! I have been whinging about the increasing presence of Poisonous Cheese in everything for years. It gives me terrible migraines that apparently look like epileptic fits.

Mayonnaise in everything is also a bugbear, but that's just because I am not a fan of it.

Attempting to avoid wheat doesn't go well for me, either.

GarlicAnywhere · 30/07/2026 18:16

Another frustrated dairy intolerant here. I flippin' love cheese - but, if I choose to eat it, I'm knowingly choosing a week of unpleasant after-effects. Might be worth it for an award-winning fromage at Christmas. Definitely isn't for a midweek ready meal with superfluous ingredients.

And PÂTÉ! Over the years, more and more varieties turn up with cream or whey in them. It used to be only about half of them, now Sainsbury's have no dairy-free pâtés and neither do Morrison's. Aldi sometimes has one or two. The Co-Op, my other local supermarket, puts dairy in bloody everything. If I can't have cheese on my toast, I really want pâté!

Also sympathising with the gluten avoiders. You're right, it's used for thickening where it should have been cornflour.

Hrrrrmph.

Co op definitely do a dairy free pate as I buy it all the time for my daughter so do Tesco

Sorry but that’s very ableist. I cook mostly from
scratch but you have to appreciate that it’s not possible for everyone: some people have a disability that makes standing for even short periods hard, they might have an issue with their hands making it impossible to hold knives etc safely, they might tire very easily and choose to focus their energy on their work or family. My Gran is 99 years old and until recently was living independently at home- she is no longer able to properly cook after being a from
scratch cook her whole life but it’s not safe any more so she uses ready meals. Not to mention people living in short term accommodation that might not have proper cooking facilities or equipment. Or someone might be very unwell or injured temporarily like OP or longer term with something like cancer- eating is important but cooking properly may not be.
I also sometimes choose to use it as a quick option after a long day but that’s a choice. For some people it’s not a choice it’s essential.

Again very privileged outlook- you have the ability to cook from scratch in the first place plus you have the facilities to freeze these meals ahead of time.

Overtheatlantic · 30/07/2026 19:36

I feel the same about leeks; they take over the taste of whatever they’re paired with. Revolting things.

That’s annoying. Yes my parents buy it for DD- they did have to search through them to find it though.

Complete with smug emoji 🤣🤣

Are you so hard of thinking that it’s never occurred to you that some people happen to LIKE ready meals but that they just don’t want cheese in them?

What does your cooking and your freezer have to do with anything the OP is discussing?

Iamthemoom · 30/07/2026 19:40

I love cheese, where it should be, on a cracker, on toast, in lasagne but I’m with you op. It shouldn’t be on a cottage pie or on a chicken dish. It does seem to be in everything these days.

Mischance · 30/07/2026 19:44

I'm with you on this. I cannot have cheese and like to have a few ready meals in the freezer for lazy days - but very hard to find ones without cheese.

My other bugbear is the source of so many of the ingredients in ready meals - I do not want factory farmed chicken from Thailand thank you!
