Aibu to have reported the dustbin lorry to the council?

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

Recently they have been playing loud music in the garden at the weekends in a passive aggressive way. This started when they complained about our chickens being noisy ( we have rehomed the chickens because of this but thats another story) the reason I'm saying all of this is because in general I am just in a bad mood about our neighbours and don't know if this has tainted my reaction.

So next door neighbour is a bin man, he wasn't at work.
Bin lorry come and parks up across my drive . Workmen get out and go in neighbours house/garden for 40 minutes having a drink and break. All this time I was unable to get off or access my drive. There was a bin lorry parked unattended across it.

So husband rings to complain to the council. They were confused as on their tracker the lorry was supposedly elsewhere. They also agreed 40minutes was excessive but said they must have been emptying bins? No they were having a cuppa at my neighbours! Council are going to investigate, I suspect they were taking unauthorised breaks and turning the tracker off.. maybe.

Anyway the reason this has also annoyed me so much is our neighbours have lived hear 30+ years and act like they own the street. Complain about anything we do (leaves from our trees fall in their garden for example.) They are 60+ and set in their ways and we are a young family. Tbh I just dont think they like us, we normally don't rise to it and smile and wave etc. But this time I had had enough and complained.

Aibu? And have we just started ww3?

You are being as silly as your neighbour. Why didn’t you ask them to move the truck? It’s all a bit pathetic.
Ignore the requests in the future and ignore their visitors too, if they park across your driveway ask them to move, like you would ask anyone else.
Unless you want to continue playing this game.
I wouldn’t be snapping photos and making calls to report on workers.

adragoncalledaudrey · 01/08/2026 10:02

Bumpyroads · 01/08/2026 07:28

They know we reported it of course. We have given evidence they asked for.

I wouldn't let nasty neighbours dictate where I live. I like my house and no plans on moving for at least 10 years

How do they know you reported it? They might have an inkling, of course, but they won’t know.

If the council show the driver the photographs evidence, they’ll easily work out where the picture was taken from.
I mean in this situation it’s usually obvious who the nosey troublemaker neighbours are on the street, the type who buy chickens in a residential area.

PrettyPickle · 01/08/2026 10:11

maxslice · 01/08/2026 04:37

Wouldn’t it have been simpler, easier, and less likely to start a feud to have just walked over and politely asked if the driver of the bin truck could please move it so you could get out of your drive? They could have easily moved it in under ten minutes and return to their tea. An “investigation” may set things off.

@ EmeraldShamrock000

Nope sorry, the dustbin men made the decision that lead to this ending the way it did, when they chose not to park in front of one of the two houses they were visiting but to block a third parties drive instead which was wholly unreasonable.

Why should the OP just need to pop round to avoid issues, why didn't they park where they were going or at least not blocking a drive, there is no excuse for that. They got what they reserved and you reap what you sow.

True. But the council would have to be careful about identifying complainers too. So as said, unless they anre shown the photo, the men will be fairly sure but won’t know.

Unless OP told her neighbour they grassed on her dad.

As they said, it is unreasonable having the drive blocked if they needed to get out of the drive. I would have understood the call if they needed to use the drive. But they didn’t.

They’ve pretty much said their rage is at their neighbour and their actions stemmed from that.

That is why they were unreasonable.

But I’m also old - so what do I know?

Well it's also obvious who the really inconsiderate Council employees are too.

I doubt your bin will get emptied for a few weeks now. They might just forget to empty it.

Or make sure a lot of rubbish gets spilled on your drive!

I think YABVU to complain about them blocking your drive when you didn't even need to move your car. And I'm sure they're entitled to breaks, like any other worker.

LakieLady · 01/08/2026 10:24

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:53

I think my point is they have been petty about countless things with us and I finally broke and was petty back.

But your pettiness won't affect your neighbours at all, just the poor buggers who empty stinking bins week in, week out in all weathers!

Our bin men also grit the roads and pavements in icy or snowy weather (or did, last time we had any, which was probably 10 years ago).

If your council has the same arrangement, I hope they leave your section of pavement icy!

LakieLady · 01/08/2026 10:28

ColdAsAWitches · 30/07/2026 15:40

So you didn't actually need access at the time. And they've "passive-aggressively" been playing music? While having the cheek to be 60? Jesus Christ.

I had no idea we old gimmers weren't supposed to play music.

I've been transgressing this bit of etiquette for nearly 11 years.

LakieLady · 01/08/2026 10:35

crowsfeet57 · 30/07/2026 16:09

Thing is when you buy a house with a drive you have the right to use the drive whenever you want to. Not just when it suits your neighbours, your neighbour's colleagues or any old random who can't be arsed to find somewhere to park that involves them walking more than 10 feet.

Personally I would have made them move it and then driven round the block, come back and made them move it again!

Maybe I should do this every time a supermarket delivery van blocks my drive while delivering to the houses across the road.

But I won't, because I'd prefer them to block my drive than the whole street for the few minutes it takes and, more importantly, because I'm not a petty cunt.

There’s a big difference between parking for a few minutes to complete a delivery and going inside a house to have a cup of tea. What they did was outstandingly rude.

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 16:19

Well if my friend came round for a cuppa and were parked infront of my neighbours drive I would have told them to move.
They bin men were wrong because you cant park over someone's drive.
If we had done the same to they neighbours they would be the first to complain.

This is the first time we have been petty I am not proud however they have been petty many times in the past and we have not retaliated.
Their pettiness included leaving their led disco lights on a timer to come on at night in their garden while they went on holiday knowing they would shine directly into our bedrooms. That is just an example of many things.

Isn't it far more likely that they forgot to turn their disco lights off? Us oldies do tend to get forgetful.

Assuming that they did it on purpose makes me wonder if you are overthinking things somewhat. Not everyone is as petty as you.

Poor fuckers have one of the shittest jobs imaginable. Now you went and grassed them up for stopping for a cup of tea…

And purely because the OP is pissed off with the neighbour who was kind enough to make them a drink on a scorching day...

RedRock41 · 01/08/2026 11:07

Sorry OP Team neighbours here. They’ve lived there 3 decades then newbies first get chickens in a residential area and then effectively spitefully grass up the husband’s work colleagues for calling in. Well done 👏. You’ve likely cost the bin men their jobs. Of course they shouldn’t of been skiving (none of your business in any case, live and let live) but if it really was an issue with the lorry you could’ve asked them to move it. Not right to grass up workies, just because your neighbours rub you up the wrong way.

Well you couldn't make it up... our neighbour the other side has just told me her dad has got in big trouble at work cos he was part of the bin crew that parked infront of our house.
Funny how both sides said it was ok but no one thought to ask us!

Wow, so you've managed to piss off the bin men and both sets of neighbours with one phone call, OP! That's olympic level shit-stirring.

I hope they're both more tolerant and mature than you and don't retaliate.

LakieLady · 01/08/2026 11:37

NewShoes · 01/08/2026 06:44

I’d be really annoyed if a bin lorry parked across my drive so that I couldn’t get in or out for 40 minutes. I’d also have reported it as it’s really inconsiderate!

Even if you knew the bin men were in the house next door?

I'd just knock and ask them to move, it would resolve the issue far more quickly than reporting it to the council.

I described them in a way that I saw fit to explain we have different lifestyles or live differently. Honestly its not that deep.

It’s ageist, full stop.

LakieLady · 01/08/2026 12:00

There is NO excuse for blocking someone’s drive!

I live in a narrow street where there is only room for cars to park on one side. Parking spaces are hard to come by, even though most houses have a drive, because so many people now have more than one vehicle.

Consequently, delivery vans etc have to choose between blocking the entire road or blocking a drive, and do you know what? No-one really gives much of a toss! More often than not, people know where the driver is delivering to or working, and if they don't, it rarely takes more than a couple of minutes to find out.

When the people across the road were having their loft conversion done, my NDN and I were perfectly happy for their tradesmen to block our drives rather than block the whole sodding street and inconvenience everyone when they had to drop off materials and heavy equipment. And the bin men have to block the entire street when they come and empty our bins, too. There's no way they'd ever find a space big enough to park a dustcart here.

Yes but there is a large stretch of straight road with no houses the other side of the street, i have parked there when we've had visitors and our visitors park there. So its not like they had no other option.

Why didn’t she use her words and ask them to move. She took the time to make a call, take photographs but couldn’t simply ask, instead she caused a lot of trouble for these men, causing upset in the neighbourhood, most people have had an unauthorised tea break.
She is an entitled spiteful person.

To be fair you are noticing what everyone else in your street is doing.

We’d be forgiven for thinking you could.
