Aibu to have reported the dustbin lorry to the council?

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

Recently they have been playing loud music in the garden at the weekends in a passive aggressive way. This started when they complained about our chickens being noisy ( we have rehomed the chickens because of this but thats another story) the reason I'm saying all of this is because in general I am just in a bad mood about our neighbours and don't know if this has tainted my reaction.

So next door neighbour is a bin man, he wasn't at work.
Bin lorry come and parks up across my drive . Workmen get out and go in neighbours house/garden for 40 minutes having a drink and break. All this time I was unable to get off or access my drive. There was a bin lorry parked unattended across it.

So husband rings to complain to the council. They were confused as on their tracker the lorry was supposedly elsewhere. They also agreed 40minutes was excessive but said they must have been emptying bins? No they were having a cuppa at my neighbours! Council are going to investigate, I suspect they were taking unauthorised breaks and turning the tracker off.. maybe.

Anyway the reason this has also annoyed me so much is our neighbours have lived hear 30+ years and act like they own the street. Complain about anything we do (leaves from our trees fall in their garden for example.) They are 60+ and set in their ways and we are a young family. Tbh I just dont think they like us, we normally don't rise to it and smile and wave etc. But this time I had had enough and complained.

Aibu? And have we just started ww3?

Unless you desperately needed to be somewhere, I couldn't be arsed with all this and probably wouldn't even notice.

RoaryMouth · 30/07/2026 15:15

Did you ask them to move the bin lorry? Were you needing to get off your drive or just annoyed?
If no to the above then why call the council telling tales? And yes you are now at war. 💣

JontyGentooey · 30/07/2026 15:15

This is bats. Surely the binmen on duty can't just go on a jolly and leave their lorry unattended for 40 mins? Seems bizarre they'd risk getting into trouble just to help their mate piss off his neighbour.

Velvera · 30/07/2026 15:18

So you wanted to get all the bin men in trouble not just your neighbour?

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:19

No I didn't need to get on or off the drive however if I was coming back from shopping with the kids etc I would have been pissed off the have to park else where because I couldn't get on my own drive.
Telling tales I guess was a build up of frustration of them constantly moaning about us and them swanning about like angels.

Don't think they done it to piss me off but to go round for a cuppa on their shift.

OP posts:
Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:20

@Velvera if they weren't doing anything wrong they wouldn't get into trouble

I doubt your bin will get emptied for a few weeks now. They might just forget to empty it.

OP if you want to 'go to town' on this you need to take a photo (with a time and date stamp) of the bin lorry across your drive.

Not all bin lorries have trackers. You will need to write to your council with a Freedom of Information Request asking if all the bin lorries have trackers.

Some authorities have a "task and finish' policy. ie when the bin lorry has completed it's round, the operatives can go home.
If that is the case then it doesn't matter if they take a 40 min teabreak or go home 40 mins early.

CurlewKate · 30/07/2026 15:25

Oh-they’re 60+? They’re definitely in the wrong then.

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 30/07/2026 15:29

YABU if you didn't knock first and ask them to move because you need to get in/out.

Please tell me you did?

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:29

Council said that the lorry was supposedly to be at a school at that time. We have pictures and also it arriving and leaving on our ring door bell.
Only reason I mentioned ages as I dont understand why they dislike us so much and can only think of the difference in lifestyle and that we have found children. Sorry if you found it irrelevant.

So youve taken your dislike of the neighbour out on some people that just work with him, potentially putting their jobs at risk, because, let's face it, if they were parked outside a cafe somewhere, you wouldn't give a damn.

Absolutely BU and this will do nowt but escalate

Oh it will

All over her path.

And she'll find her bin right down the far end of the road 😁🤣

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:31

They could have literally parked a bit further away or even infront of his drive?
He could of said to them not to park there but xyz space would be fine?

RoaryMouth · 30/07/2026 15:32

You’ve complained about a group of bin men having a cuppa though, not about your neighbour. So some guys you don’t know, who slightly annoyed you and didn’t actually inconvenience you might get a telling off. Your neighbour wasn’t involved as not working. Poor bin men - hot, grubby work, taking a chance to cool down and chat.

I dont understand why they dislike us so much

I think I might have a bit of an idea...

JMSA · 30/07/2026 15:32

I’m going to bet that you didn’t need your car at this time, but just thought you’d snitch anyway.
How are you in any way better than them? It’s going to be totally obvious it was you. I’d hate to be in that position. It was petty to make the relationship even worse.

Marroon · 30/07/2026 15:34

You knew where they were, if you really needed to get out of your drive you could have dealt with it at the time. You’ve made a complete mountain out of a molehill.

whenallthesconesaregone · 30/07/2026 15:36

Ugh. This would get my blood boiling. I live in a similar town where entitlement is the order of the day & some families are long established, well connected and utterly selfish. In the past and in my naivety I’ve shown frustration only to get one hell of a back lash lasting years. Now I pick my battles & try to avoid all contact with the aggressive ones - it’s one way of dealing with bullies. You were right, of course, but it seems your neighbours have some clout.

Lifejigsaw · 30/07/2026 15:36

Where did you find the children?

ColdAsAWitches · 30/07/2026 15:40

So you didn't actually need access at the time. And they've "passive-aggressively" been playing music? While having the cheek to be 60? Jesus Christ.

You have way too much time on your hands.

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:47

It would be interesting to see if the response would be the same if I had just said councils bin lorry parked infront of my drive and buggered off the have a break for 40 mins.

They didn't know i knew where they were, they didn't knock and say just shout us if you need us to move etc.

Well if you didnt have beef with your neighbour you probably will now after reporting his work colleagues to the council! You could have asked them to move it and sounds like you didnt even need to go anywhere at the time so the call to the council was unnecessary.

Their age was definitely irrelevant. If you didn't even ask the lorry to move because you needed access then you YABU and may now experience a worse relationship with your neighbours and disgruntled bin men.
