AIBU to ask neighbours not to walk across my driveway?

Autumn02 · 29/07/2026 15:05

Am I being unreasonable to ask neighbours to stop using my drive as a path?

I have a driveway in front of my property and the neighbour on my left has a driveway connected and in front of their property. The neighbour on my right has a drive way to the right of their property on the side. Everyday the right neighbours walk across my garden and up and down my driveway way rather than using their own path out of their house. To walk their dogs or head out on foot. It sets my doorbell off constantly. They walk down it regardless of if we are parked on the drive or not and walk very close to our cars which makes me worried they’ll get scratched. Our driveway is private property and not a shared communal space.

Would it be ridiculous for me to politely ask them not to as it’s setting the cameras off?

Might seem like a tiny thing but the constant notifications on the camera are annoying and despite them often being inconsiderate neighbours noise wise I have never said anything.

Please let me know your thoughts and whether if you were in my shoes this was something you’d do.

Isn't it so very British to be utterly offended by someone walking over some demoted line on a plan somewhere. It's really not a big deal is it. It's land outside your house, they aren't marching through your house to get there. Feel like you need other things to concern yourself with.

I've lived abroad and visited friends in various countries and their houses have had hedges or fencing and in some cases security gates, so nobody can park or walk over their property in the way that OP's neighbours do. Presumably therefore objecting to it isn't so very British at all.

I would absolutely hate it, OP.

You can if you like obviously my neighbour did the same to me which I thought was really petty and I subsequently refused access to scaffolders when they wanted to replace the roof so be careful. The thing with neighbours is that everything is reciprical. If you think you're never gonna need anything whatsoever from them then by all means do so.

So where you live you are THAT neighbour

Well done you!

You’ve just made yourself sound ridiculous and petty.

You shouldn’t have been walking on their property to start with and certainly shouldn’t have taken revenge when they asked you not to.

maybe I was brought up to respect other people’s property. I don’t think it’s petty to ask people to not trespass. It’s definitely petty to refuse scaffolders. Glad you’re not my neighbour

Agree with you 100%.

Some people have no respect for other peoples property and are of the “ give them inch, they take a mile” mindset.

I would be getting a fence up pronto. Perhaps the posters who think you are being petty would like to pay for the scratches ( that will inevitably happen) on your car?

I get on just fine with my neighbours, but I would absolutely not be ok with what is CFuckery of the finest example!

The Entitlement of some people…

Planting is definitely the way forward - make it impossible to cross your garden. Lovely big flower beds with shrubs and roses. As an added bonus your house will look lovely, I love seeing pretty front gardens.

HGHGHG · 29/07/2026 18:14

Can't you change your ring doorbell settings re the sensitivity notifications?

Sometimessmiling · 29/07/2026 18:18

MeridianB · 29/07/2026 15:22

Fence? Large planters?

Yep we had to for same reasons

But then she'll miss the notifications that she wants. She quite rightly wants to see people on her private property.

I personally would consider switching off the notifications at certain times in this adjustment period, but certainly not simply to accommodate the trespassers.

Couldn’t possibly respond without seeing a diagram

Noshowlomo · 29/07/2026 18:41

Diagrams just make things a bit sexier is all OP.
This would piss me off! So do whatever you need to.. planters, fence etc

ShutUpChris · 29/07/2026 18:48

Autumn02 · 29/07/2026 15:35

Thank you for the helpful posters suggesting I try planters to hopefully avoid petty neighbours in the future. Much kinder than individuals suggesting I get rid of my camera. Strange suggestion that makes me think they are inconsiderate neighbours too!

Can you do a diagram? We can advise accordingly

They set it off because they go right by it. I’d have to turn off my doorbell completely. They wouldn’t set it off if they weren’t on my property. I’m not going to turn off my doorbell I have for security because of someone trespassing. That seems backwards

I would get a fence / planters.

I think it’s not possible to stop access for vital maintenance works. However I’d ask them not to do it. I’m assuming you cannot fence it off? Or plant Berberis?

Hiya. I am trying to get ideas for my driveway. Why do you say berberis? I know nothing about plants but having looked this one up it looks nice.

Wouldn't bother me tbh but, i have lovely neighbours who i get on with so nothing like this would ever worry me.

Nearly50omg · 29/07/2026 21:02

Fences make better neighbours relationships

NorthFacingGardener · 29/07/2026 21:06

They’re obviously not considerate reasonable people or they wouldn’t be doing it… so there’s no point politely asking.

As others have suggested get a hedge / fence / big planters. Pretend you’re suddenly very into gardening. Don't leave gaps between the planters that they can squeeze through 🤣 consider prickly plants.

I'd be the same as you. I put up with my neighbours annoyances because I'm sure we do things that annoy them too.

When my teenage ds plays his guitar a bit too loudly they tell him he is really good next time they see him. When their grandkids throw their toys in my garden and scream the place down, I hand the toys back and sympathise with them about what hard work little kids can be. Life is long if we are lucky, I'm not about to make it harder for myself by beefing with my neighbours over little things, thankfully they are the same.

AFigureWalks · 29/07/2026 21:40

Trip wires or landmines.
seriously though, it’s not on; it’s like marking “their territory”.

DH bought a ring doorbell installed the app on my phone. It's very annoying I put it on snooze when he's in the front garden.

She probably doesn't realise that it sets off yours so tell her that a loud alarm goes off on your phone. She's cheeky anyway.

NameChangeAgain48 · 29/07/2026 22:08

Id put up picked fencing.

BalakayAARon · 29/07/2026 15:32

I don't think there is any point in saying anything, as only knobs would use your private property like a public thoroughfare. Especially squeezing past your car.

I would put something up to make it less convenient for them.

I agree with this. Anyone who behaves like this is a knob and proud of it ( like the previous poster) so you will have to find a way to make it difficult for them to walk across.

ioveelephants · 29/07/2026 22:12

ofcolitas · 29/07/2026 15:27

Indeed I am. Which kind of proves my point. If you're going to be a knob, then don't be a knob to a knob, coz they'll be a knob back.😀

😂 💯

Weird brag

But also, you can’t refuse access for repairs so this probably didn’t happen
