AIBU to ask neighbours not to walk across my driveway?

Am I being unreasonable to ask neighbours to stop using my drive as a path?

I have a driveway in front of my property and the neighbour on my left has a driveway connected and in front of their property. The neighbour on my right has a drive way to the right of their property on the side. Everyday the right neighbours walk across my garden and up and down my driveway way rather than using their own path out of their house. To walk their dogs or head out on foot. It sets my doorbell off constantly. They walk down it regardless of if we are parked on the drive or not and walk very close to our cars which makes me worried they’ll get scratched. Our driveway is private property and not a shared communal space.

Would it be ridiculous for me to politely ask them not to as it’s setting the cameras off?

Might seem like a tiny thing but the constant notifications on the camera are annoying and despite them often being inconsiderate neighbours noise wise I have never said anything.

Please let me know your thoughts and whether if you were in my shoes this was something you’d do.

You can if you like obviously my neighbour did the same to me which I thought was really petty and I subsequently refused access to scaffolders when they wanted to replace the roof so be careful. The thing with neighbours is that everything is reciprical. If you think you're never gonna need anything whatsoever from them then by all means do so.

But why? Why is it petty not to want neighbours walking through your driveway when they could perfectly well use their own driveway?

It's you who was being petty. I feel sorry for your neighbours.

Fence? Large planters?

This

maybe just be glad you don’t have someone trespassing multiple times daily. Maybe if you did you wouldn’t be acting like you are. I haven’t paid lots of money to own my home for anyone who feels like it to treat my property like a public footpath

I wouldn't care. It's not like they are traipsing through my house.

Yellowpapersun · 29/07/2026 16:23

I don't think you're unreasonable, op. We had a similar problem in our last house where a neighbour from 4 doors away walked across people's gardens instead of on the footpath. Our neighbours and we planted a narrow border of prickly shrubs down the side of our lawns and put pots and planters down the side of the drives and it stopped him.

I wouldn't care. It's not like they are traipsing through my house.

But they are trespassing on my property and I can not have full privacy as they can see right in my house. They would not be able to if they weren’t stood on my land

Personally I wouldn’t t ask my neighbours not to do this. - simply because they could then retaliate or do it more. I personally wouldn’t walk across someone else’s drive, you are not unreasonable to not want them to do this - but if you ask and they continue or escalate - what then? I think a bit of give and take is easier.

LadyUrsula · 29/07/2026 16:24

I had this problem when I moved house years ago. I did mention it and said I'd prefer them not to do it but they kept 'forgetting'. It really irritated me so I gradually made it more difficult by putting a new fence up and adding large plant pots until it was impossible for them to trespass.

Autumn02 · 29/07/2026 16:25

I am going to get a planter as hopefully a subtle message not to. I don’t think I should just put up with it as other posters have suggested. Thank you for the kind comments and suggestions.

Entitled knob at that.

Notquitethetruth · 29/07/2026 16:28

It's rude of your neighbours. They have a sense of entitlement and are arrogant with it. There is also the added risk of them damaging your car as they walk by.
What happens if your neighbour has a fall or accident while on your property? You could be held liable.
Possibly approach them and tell them their crossing your property is triggering your doorbell and ask them to stop. This is something which an increasing number of homes have now for security purposes.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/07/2026 16:29

I think it’s not possible to stop access for vital maintenance works. However I’d ask them not to do it. I’m assuming you cannot fence it off? Or plant Berberis?

Get a doorbell you have to press, and don't be petty. Life is too short .

It's not petty - why would you walk across someone else's drive/garden when you have your own - it is rude and lazy and quite frankly stupid!

Bananacrepewithnuts · 29/07/2026 16:32

ofcolitas · 29/07/2026 15:27

Indeed I am. Which kind of proves my point. If you're going to be a knob, then don't be a knob to a knob, coz they'll be a knob back.😀

Thank God I'm not your neighbour you sound like a right wind up.

cabus · 29/07/2026 16:33

But surely your camera sending you frequent notifications is a very good reason to ask them to stop using your drive. If they don't take the hint, get planters.

impatientfury · 29/07/2026 15:55

Isn't it so very British to be utterly offended by someone walking over some demoted line on a plan somewhere. It's really not a big deal is it. It's land outside your house, they aren't marching through your house to get there. Feel like you need other things to concern yourself with.

Really?

LaurieFairyCake · 29/07/2026 16:37

I would hate this and my dogs would go apeshit. So I’d put up a fence or prevent them.

no idea why you’re getting so much pushback - you couldn’t be LESS unreasonable 🤷‍♀️

Chewbecca · 29/07/2026 16:38

I voted YABU, solely on the basis of no diagram too.

But if there was a (half decent) diagram, I would have voted YANBU and suggested planting your borders.

Happyjoe · 29/07/2026 16:40

If they won't stop when you ask them, physical barrier is the only way to stop it. Low fence or some planters.

And no, you're not being unreasonable to not want people walking over your property or to want a camera doorbell.

travailtotravel · 29/07/2026 16:41

Why not just have a conversation with them ..

Neighbour, is there a reason you walk down my path rather than your own? I only noticed how often you do it as it sets off my ring doorbell every time you do"

This doesn't accuse and is curious. There may be a reason they do it - force of habit most likely. From there you can ask them not to, or let them know you're changing the garden soon and going to put some planters in etc etc, as you prefer.

BeaLola · 29/07/2026 16:41

I can see you are going to get a planter - good idea

you may need a few depending on driveway size but as you can park on it I assume it’s a fair size - depending on how it looks a fence perhaps ?

Quite.
Just explain that to them with a sugar coated vibe.
I wouldn’t risk falling out with a neighbour over something as inconsequential as this you never know when you may need their goodwil. I do appreciate it’s irritating though
