youngsters I follow either colleagues or hairdressers/ kids of friends in their 20s, et cetera on Instagram
you check in and they've posted some bollocks about anxiety/ deep connections/Poisoning our bodies/loving full lives
is it part of being young and is it that we would have done the same in the 80s and 90s but couldn't ?
who produces all this hammy shit?

Some do, plenty don’t. People of all ages post nonsense online. It’s famous for it.

Castolaya · 29/07/2026 09:12

It is not just 20 year olds. Some people take instagram inspiration as if it is the bible of old.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 29/07/2026 09:14

I know I did when I was <25ish. I thought I was sharing some incredibly deep wisdom which would help everyone to grow spiritually. The internet was younger then and I was an early adopter but there was plenty of bilge in circulation already.

35965a · 29/07/2026 09:18

Young people think they know everything and come out with lots of shite. Always have, always will. Some of them will grow up and stop, unfortunately some do not.

BauhausOfEliott · 29/07/2026 09:20

The only people I see doing this are older.

Likeiloveyou · 29/07/2026 09:23

My DC are Gen Z and think this kind of shit is for “tragic millennial basics” so I don’t think it’s about young people across the board.

Just in your social circles maybe?

Fimofriend · 29/07/2026 09:24

Do the sentences at least make sense? There was this research project some years ago where the researchers had AI make " inspirational quotes" and it was all complete nonsense. They wanted to see how it spread and who spread it. The conclusion was that it spread fast and the people who spread it were unintelligent.

My DH's little sister, who were in her forties then, shared a lot of the nonsense quotes on Facebook. My DH was not on Facebook then so I went to him in alarm because I thought she had a stroke or something since she was consistently sharing nothing but gibberish. My DH looked at it, sighed, and stated that she was just being stupid as per usual.

She has form for being rather pretentious and there is most definitely some Dunning-Kruger Syndrome there.

MyDarlingRose · 29/07/2026 09:29

In my day we posted that shit on Tumblr and felt all deep and meaningful. In the Victorian era young people wrote poems. It’s all the same search for themselves and for belonging and to make sense of the world.

Hardly unusual.

It's always words in a frame because words in a frame have more resonance it seems

Oh yes! I had forgotten that.

Well, you seem to be reading this "hammy shit".....

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 29/07/2026 09:44

Case in point. Absolutely no human thought went in to generating this.

The ones that make me laugh are girls that look about 17 dishing out sage advice for things like long term dating success. Wind your neck in love, you're a baby! You know nothing!

chedderland · 29/07/2026 09:48

It’s usually people who don’t have their life in order who think they can preach like this

Floatlikeafeather2 · 29/07/2026 10:02

Why on earth are you "following" these young girls. That's a bit weird in itself. You don't like what they post so why bother reading it?

PartoftheBand · 29/07/2026 10:48

It's mainly 40 and 50 something idiots on Facebook posting this kind of shit that I occasionally have the accidental misfortune of stumbling upon.

Flamingojune · 29/07/2026 10:50

Any examples?

SadiraOfTyr · 29/07/2026 10:53

And plenty of younger people don’t post anything at all on social media. Among DS15’s age group it is seen as a bit old hat really - something that only cringey millenials do.

Yep. My uncle in his late 50s is infamous for posting this toss and his contemporaries just eat it up.

posts meme of old woman shaking fist at a cloud

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 29/07/2026 11:12

When I was 14/15 I used to write what I thought of as inspirational quotes on white postcards and blue-tak them to my wardrobe door. I think that that was the 90s equivalent. I can’t remember many of them, but I know that definitely I had this up:

”The past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.” or learn from it.

Who came up with that piece of wisdom? The elderly monkey from The Lion King. Yep, I was prettttttty deep (this is basically the teenage girl equivalent of David Brent having a Des’ree quote above his desk). Luckily, as embarrassing as my postcard-wisdom was it was less public than the internet and only my parents were privy to it (and no doubt laughing at my bullshit when they were putting my clean washing away).
