Rickie and Melvin are being replaced by Jeremiah Asiamah (sp)

Dean Mcculouch (sp) sacked and replaced with Milo and Rosie

The influencer GK Barry given a show

Other changes that dont affect me 😩

Why???!!

Can't stand Jeremiah and literally switch off whenever he replaces Mollie King and he and his fellow 'cappuccino boy' 🤢 Matt Edmonson are on

Seems like the properly trained djs are being replaced with influencers

I also felt like Charlie used to bully Melvin, so its weird that she stays and he goes

Once upon a time we had DJs that were music lovers who came up to national radio through community radio, hospital radio, local BBC stations and pirate radio. They knew radio and - most importantly - they chose what they played themselves. They'd hear something and knew it could catch on because they knew their listeners. The DJs became personalities - in the sense they actually HAD personalities and were all quite individual - and often went hugely into TV (Wogan, Everett, Edmonds to name three) but many went back to radio because they loved doing it.

The likes of Blackburn, Gambaccini, Mayo, Bruce have devoted their lives to music and/or radio.

Now.... we have 'personalities' - but most of whom don't have them and are like one homogenous blob of bland - being given radio shows having never done an hour of radio anywhere. No learning the ropes. Producers choose the music because the hosts know nothing.

Unfortunately as television has dumbed down, influencers become famous, anyone that wins a reality show is suddenly a presenter or broadcaster regardless of talent (you'll get the occasional genuine success like Hammond and Ryan, although the former was over exposed at times) or because of nepotism.

The only way to reverse this is to uphold and praise actual talent and ignore the reality shows. Producers and controllers then might take the hint.

The problem with wanting “proper DJs” is the community radio stations, the hospital stations etc just don’t exist anymore. So either you want proper DJs who are late middle aged or older, or you get new people in via other routes. People who have worked in the music industry in other ways possibly, if you want that passion for music. But that doesn’t always follow they’re going to be entertaining or able to have a good rapport with callers etc. comedians who’ve done stand up, have worked a crowd etc are often a safer bet if you want someone who can be entertaining without a script, can easily chat with people calling in, be both amusing and interesting for interviewing guests etc. Particularly in large radio stations when other than the “speciality shows” the playlist is pretty much set centrally.

Been listening to R1 since I was 18, and am 51 now! It's a combination of liking the music, liking some of the DJs (but they're getting worse and there is a definite dumbing down as others have said) and not being able to stand any radio station that has ads. I have listened to R2 at times when it hasn't been my choice, and it really isn't for me.

RMC have really grown on me, I didn't like them when they first started. I do like Charlie on her own too on her dance show on Saturdays. I don't think Jerry is the best choice to go with her, and I feel really sorry for Ricky and Melvin. Must be awful having come to R1 as a threesome to find that only one of you is being kept on.

I rarely listen to going home now. It isn't the same since Jordan left, and I just can't take to Jamie at all. I understand it's been a difficult time with both Katie and Vick having been on maternity leave, but I feel as if it really needs some stability.

There was always something about Dean I didn't like but couldn't put my finger on, but seeing him in I'm a Celeb solidified my dislike for him, and I never listen deliberately to his shows (catch him when he is covering Greg or someone else). Won't miss him at all.

I really like Matt and Mollie's show, you can tell they are best mates in real life as that comes through a lot. Again, I didn't like Matt when he first started on R1, but he really grew on me.

I can't belive they've got GK Barry doing more, thought she was awful when she did some shows before. It's like when Aled seemed to go down employing all the vloggers when that was the new 'in thing' and they weren't great either.

I get that I'm not in the target market for R1, although the two times I've been to Big Weekend there has been an awful of people there that have been 40+.

Thank god for DAB radio. The majority of radio DJs spout drivel and finitum. Don't even start me on their "crews". Yeah, I'm definitely old. It feels like I've been old since 1981 (the Steve Wright breakfast show). Just play the tunes and cut out the drivel.

Netcurtainnelly · 29/07/2026 12:46

Local radio was vandalised.

UrbanFan · 29/07/2026 12:51

I listen to both Radio 1 and Radio 2. Mostly radio 2, I enjoy the company. I am fed up that they seem to keep replacing authentic DJs that actually know about music with TV personalities and comedians. And as for R1 using influencers, well that is just terrible. Once Greg goes I won't switch over to R1 at all.

I can't listen to commercial radio though as the adverts drive me mad.

hotmumshit · 29/07/2026 18:08

I cant cope with the adverts either, thats what kept me with Greg as I was gonna switch to Jordan on capital
