Neighbours "Stolen" Bike

FergalHunter · 27/07/2026 14:27

A very curious incident occurred in my block of flats recently that I am eager to hear the forum's perspective on.

Our development runs along the corner of two roads. There are three buildings with about 55 flats in total. There's a shared garden at the back with a covered bike store where I keep my bike. There aren't any allocated spaces, but people tend to leave their bikes in the same spot and leave their locks on the stand when out for a ride. I've parked my bike in the same spot for the last two years, and there are always spare racks.

When I leave my bike there, I use a D-lock, a cable, and a bike cover. There are about 4-5 other people also using covers. I usually put another small lock on to secure the cover. This might sound like overkill, but we've had multiple instances of bikes getting nicked while I've lived here.

Anyway, onto what happened. A couple of weeks ago, I took my bike out to head to the gym, leaving my D-lock and cable attached to the rack in my usual space. When I came back about 90 minutes later, another bike was attached to the same rack. I'd seen the bike before, but don't know who owns it. Not a massive issue, but a little annoying considering there were racks nearby with spaces where people don't cover their bikes.

I was due to head on holiday for 10 days early the next morning and didn't want to leave my bike uncovered that long, so I threw the cover over both bikes. It wasn't locked down and could easily be lifted up. I didn't think it would be an issue, if anything, her bike was getting the benefit of the cover too!
While I was away, someone posted in the residents' chat that her bike had been stolen. Like I said, this isn't an uncommon occurrence, so I didn't think too much of it.

When I returned from holiday 10 days later, her bike was still sitting under the cover right next to mine. I took my bike out for another 90ish minute gym trip and when I got back, I decided I'd move my bike to an empty rack next to it so I could go back to my normal setup. I moved my bike and my cover over to the new rack, leaving her bike completely exposed on her rack.

About an hour later, the same woman posted on the residents' chat claiming her bike had been "returned", but that she'd already bought a replacement!
I'm flabbergasted that a supposedly grown adult seems to lack basic object permanence. Arriving back at her rack, seeing a cover draped over it, and immediately concluding her bike was stolen, without taking two seconds to lift the sheet, is genuinely mind-boggling to me.

Now she's on the chat insisting someone must have stolen it, taken it for a joyride, and returned it, and she is demanding CCTV access.

Is it worth trying to engage with someone like this?

I wouldn’t have covered someone else’s bike knowing I was to away for a long time. I also think you should have replied to the thread saying you had covered a bike in case that was the in case that the stolen one. I too wouldn’t be sure of where I had parked so might not have lifted a cover…

BirdLandedonmyHead · 29/07/2026 06:48

For their own peace of mind, the mosding bike woman would be better off tagging her bike with a gps tracker, so she can keep track of it.

AgnesMcDoo · 29/07/2026 07:08

Having seen the your photo of the bike cover I’m not surprised she thought it had been stolen.

she’s not stupid or at fault - her bike was hidden

LIZS · 29/07/2026 08:42

Looking at the photo it is no wonder she couldn’t find it. Did the d lock include hers too?

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 08:57

At best she's an idiot - if you think someone has stolen your bike, you can only do that by checking it's not in the place where you left it!
OP hasn't 'hidden' anyone's bike - it's literally exactly where idiot woman put it!

Don't engage - you can't argue with stupid!

FastFood · 29/07/2026 09:05

I can't for the life of me understand how you thought it was okay to cover her bike. If you say that the cover couldn't possibly cover just one bike, what did you expect her to do? Not use her bike for the time being?

She's probably being a bit disingenuous pretending that she didn't know the bike was under the cover, but you're the unreasonnable one here. Your bike would have survived without a cover for 10 days, and if it's delicate it can't sustain a bit of summer weather, you should leave it in your flat.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 29/07/2026 09:16

You are out of order for covering someone else's bike. That is a spot for two bikes, yet you seem to think it's just there for your use. When you first saw the her post why on earth didn't you just tell her where it was? You are the insane one.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 29/07/2026 09:23

So when you lock your bike up and use the covering, locking it down I bet you lock it covering the metal bars so no one can use the other side of the bike rack. Looks like she has finally had enough of this and called you out.

Do you think this proclivity for calling people who disagree with you stupid is useful? It's absolutely everywhere on this site and it's ridiculous.

Yes OP has "literally" hidden someone else's bike. They covered it up. That's literally hiding it from view.

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 10:23

Not hard to find though is it? I mean, you go to where you left your bike, can't see it but can see a cover over the space where you left it. It doesn't take a genius to check under the cover before posting online that it's been stolen! I stand by my comment that she's stupid. She's not a baby who thinks that mum covering her face with her hands and playing peek-a-boo has genuinely disappeared!

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 10:24

I do agree though that covering up someone else's bike isn't a good idea.

It doesn't really matter how hard it is to find, and the snide comments about object permanence are completely disingenuous. OP created a confusing situation, and yes the other woman made the wrong assumption, but it hardly means she's stupid - OP primed the circumstances perfectly for her to do that.

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 11:26

It's really not that confusing - it's an absolute basic to look in the place where you left it, even if the OP was wrong to cover it.

takealettermsjones · 29/07/2026 11:32

Of course it's confusing, in the most basic meaning of the word. If you went to the office fridge and saw that your lunch wasn't there, I doubt you'd immediately start opening everyone else's lunch boxes just in case they'd decided to tuck yours in with theirs for some bizarre reason

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 11:37

Not really a good comparison. If I went to the fridge and saw something on top of where I'd left my lunch, I'd lift that thing up and check underneath.

That would only work if OP had put her bike on top of the other bike and covered only her own. She didn't do that. She covered the other woman's bike, thus putting it inside a container/wrapper/receptacle belonging to another person.

I give up. Should have taken my own advice to the OP - you can't argue with stupid.

You're totally right, it's infinitely more clever to just call someone stupid and then give up rather than having another bash at explaining yourself. You've shown me right up there. 😊

Honestly I think OP is the idiot for not realising the other woman was winding her up.

Realistically, she found her bike had been hidden and decided to get her own back on OP by pretending she thought it had been stolen. I personally think that's funny, and it's even funnier that OP and others (you) are going around calling this woman stupid when you're the ones who've been had.

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 13:10

Why would the woman wind her up about this though. It's such a non event. You'd just lift the cover and access your own bike. Or put a message on the chat asking OP not to cover both in future.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 29/07/2026 13:16

This just reminds me of what my mum used to say when I couldn't find things. You have to actually move things to look for something. This woman did the equivalent of standing in the middle of her bedroom and just scanning the room with her eyes. You have to look with your hands not just your eyes.

Honestly this is such a non event. I'm so embarrassed for the woman for who it never occurred to her to lift a plastic sheet and see if what she had left is still exactly where she left it.

Honestly Jesus wept how do these people function in society, they must be spoonfed everything. So she's either got one solitary Braincell which is clearly having to do all the heavy lifting OR she's an insurance scammer. She did get a brand new bike out of this whole debacle.

Maybe cos you're fed up of OP hogging 2 places all the time and acting like that bike stand belongs to her?

You see she has covered your bike up as a petty dick move and decide to wind her up instead of confronting her.

Aiming4Optimistic · 29/07/2026 13:31

Why is it a dick move? If it rains the bike is protected. OP didn't lock it so that the owner couldn't access her own property? It's just a cover.

People can be funny about 'parking' spaces. Humans are creatures of habit and we tend to return to the same spaces. At work, even though we have a massive car park and the spaces are pretty much all the same, everyone still parks in 'their' spot. It's odd but we just do. I guess it's the same with bike spots. I didn't read it as OP hogging two spaces, only that she uses the same one. Could be wrong about that though
