Neighbours "Stolen" Bike

FergalHunter · 27/07/2026 14:27

A very curious incident occurred in my block of flats recently that I am eager to hear the forum's perspective on.

Our development runs along the corner of two roads. There are three buildings with about 55 flats in total. There's a shared garden at the back with a covered bike store where I keep my bike. There aren't any allocated spaces, but people tend to leave their bikes in the same spot and leave their locks on the stand when out for a ride. I've parked my bike in the same spot for the last two years, and there are always spare racks.

When I leave my bike there, I use a D-lock, a cable, and a bike cover. There are about 4-5 other people also using covers. I usually put another small lock on to secure the cover. This might sound like overkill, but we've had multiple instances of bikes getting nicked while I've lived here.

Anyway, onto what happened. A couple of weeks ago, I took my bike out to head to the gym, leaving my D-lock and cable attached to the rack in my usual space. When I came back about 90 minutes later, another bike was attached to the same rack. I'd seen the bike before, but don't know who owns it. Not a massive issue, but a little annoying considering there were racks nearby with spaces where people don't cover their bikes.

I was due to head on holiday for 10 days early the next morning and didn't want to leave my bike uncovered that long, so I threw the cover over both bikes. It wasn't locked down and could easily be lifted up. I didn't think it would be an issue, if anything, her bike was getting the benefit of the cover too!
While I was away, someone posted in the residents' chat that her bike had been stolen. Like I said, this isn't an uncommon occurrence, so I didn't think too much of it.

When I returned from holiday 10 days later, her bike was still sitting under the cover right next to mine. I took my bike out for another 90ish minute gym trip and when I got back, I decided I'd move my bike to an empty rack next to it so I could go back to my normal setup. I moved my bike and my cover over to the new rack, leaving her bike completely exposed on her rack.

About an hour later, the same woman posted on the residents' chat claiming her bike had been "returned", but that she'd already bought a replacement!
I'm flabbergasted that a supposedly grown adult seems to lack basic object permanence. Arriving back at her rack, seeing a cover draped over it, and immediately concluding her bike was stolen, without taking two seconds to lift the sheet, is genuinely mind-boggling to me.

Now she's on the chat insisting someone must have stolen it, taken it for a joyride, and returned it, and she is demanding CCTV access.

Is it worth trying to engage with someone like this?

The OP said it was attached to the same rack. So it was locked on. Which makes the woman even more stupid - she thinks someone unlocked her bike, used it for 2 weeks, brought it back and locked it back in the exact same place.

That's her bike and mine under a cover to the right. You can see with a D-Lock on there's no way to cover just 1 bike

Yeah there is, the cover would just bunch up a bit over the D lock?

But also, even if you're right (you're not), why wouldn't you post on the chat explaining what you'd had to do?

But if the OPs bike was locked then there would be no way of covering it without putting the cover entirely over the bike stand, if there's a bike on the other side of the stand then you'd have to cover both bikes. Presumably the OP didn't want to half cover her bike because she was going to be away for 10 days and wanted it protected.

Your comments on this post are very odd.

momtoboys · 27/07/2026 15:20

You are at fault here. Although you could not predict the outcome, hiding the woman's bike (which is essentially what you did) and her thinking it was stolen is on you.

If you were her would you not at least have taken a peek to see if it was exactly where you left it though?

In retrospect I accept I should have dropped in a message. I didn't think it was a big issue and never in a million years thought someone might believe it to be stolen.
I would go talk to her but I have no idea who she is.

Sorry OP I think this is on you…..

I probably would, but I can totally see why she didn't, given that bikes had been stolen - she wouldn't want to be caught on CCTV looking under covers as it might lead to accusations of her being the thief.

FeckAboutAndFindOut · 27/07/2026 15:22

Are you a known, active user on the group chat?
I'd ignore it totally until the CCTV reveals you, doing what?, covering then uncovering her bike.
If footage is added, you can do the "oh that's me! I'm so sorry blah blah" then and claim you hadn't added 2+2 before.
Until then, keep shtum.
Unless you have £500 spare for a second bike, or whatever she paid for it. If you do end up being asked for cash, you insist on seeing a receipt/statement, keep the new one for resale and possibly knock a bit off for a month's usage.

bunnypenny · 27/07/2026 15:23

You behaved very oddly OP. I genuinely can’t think why you thought it would be appropriate to cover someone else’s bike, particularly when you were going away for 10 days.

such weird behaviour from you. And from your photo of course you could have ensured the cover only covered your bike.

there’s a sense of entitlement from you in your post that that rack belongs to you (it doesn’t), that the woman shouldn’t have left her bike on that rack (which was empty at the time she did so) because there were other empty ones nearby where people didn’t cover their bikes, and that you thought it appropriate to cover someone else’s bike because you were going on holiday (it’s not).

Weeellokthen · 27/07/2026 15:24

Bikes aren't cheap, therefore I would definately have checked the surrounding area and under the cover as a first basic check before buying a new one.
Maybe thats just me though 😂

PrettyPickle · 27/07/2026 15:25

Well, how very dare you be considerate and cover someones bike, making them think it was stolen! See where being nice gets you! 🤣😉 I'd just message her and explain. If there is CCTV coverage she will find out anyway.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 27/07/2026 15:27

Yes the other woman was mad. I don't understand how people like that manage day to day life. Just think a little! Of course you would look to see if your bike is exactly where you left it!

Pootles34 · 27/07/2026 15:27

Oh my god you have to have a bit of fun with her - aren't you tempted to pop the cover back on hers?

moltopianissimo · 27/07/2026 15:28

FergalHunter · 27/07/2026 14:41

There were no entirely empty racks close by. Why should I not be able to cover my bike bc she decided to lock her's to the rack I've been using for the last 2 years?

Sorry this is totally off-topic, but I'm genuinely astounded that someone is familiar with the concept of "object permanence" but also writes "her's".

Are you not aware of typos?

Doowoddy · 27/07/2026 15:29

If there were no empty racks nearby when you returned then likely there was only one empty rack before you returned ("your" one) so she obviously used that one. ETA she wouldn't have known the next person to use it was a bike-coverer so had no reason to leave one rack empty and join another non-coverer on their rack.

You were weird to cover hers up as you could have squished the cover around the bike a bit (that's what I would have done) to not cover hers.

She was weird to not look under the cover but if I saw two bikes sharing a rack and a cover I'd assume they belonged to a couple/housemates who have this arrangement. She likely didn't remember exactly which rack she used.

Basically you both brain farted but all she did was park her bike on an empty rack, and you covered it up, so it's mostly on you and has cost her a decent amount of cash.

Oh come on, OP didn't do it to be nice 🤣 they did it to be a PITA because they were annoyed someone had used "their" rack!

Weekendnaughtiness · 27/07/2026 15:29

Yes, I'm awware of typos - see, I just made one - but it didn't look like a typo.

LeedsLoiner · 27/07/2026 15:31

If you were going away wouldn't it have been simpler to put the bike in your flat until you got back?
Or is this more about "You've parked in my space" territorial pissing ?

Actually that’s a good point

penelopepocket · 27/07/2026 15:32

if I was her I would have been initially confused then would have checked under the cover.
But:
I dont understand why you had to cover both bikes and I think it’s odd that you would do so. Thinking of my bike cover, I could manoeuvre it around so it would just be over my bike if another was locked to the same rack. I just wouldn't think to cover someone else’s too?
So both a bit odd, but her more so when the end result was her needing to buy a new bike!

You got an answer that makes perfect sense and don’t like it because you were being unreasonable insisting on some perceived „right“ to a certain spot.

I think it was weird to cover someone else’s bike with a cover but agree with PPs that she should have lifted the cover. Weird all around.

Personally I‘d keep quiet and say nothing - hoping it will blow over.

arminius · 27/07/2026 15:33

You’re the weird one here. It’s not your space and covering up her bike is needlessly mad and yes, passive aggressive

Is the place allocated to you? If not well then tough, anyone can use it as they please. Got were being out of line by marking your territory, except it's not yours.
