Is my maths wrong? (Shop refund)

Big supermarket near me, closed off its changing rooms during COVID. Went in to buy something important that needs to fit correctly (swimming costume for a pool party booked the next day).

I asked a staff member near the clothing if the changing room was open any more, she confirmed no (I think they're now used as stock storage, you basically can't get beyond any barrier at the entrance). She advised of a 100 day refund policy and confirmed if was okay to buy a few, try them on that day, then refund (with all labels and hangers) the same day.

Bought a few costumes in different sizes (size 12, 14 and 2 different style 16s) along with my £20 ISH food shopping. Paid on a credit card and some vouchers I'd got (think something like clubcard voucher or Asda rewards, a specific £value). Total was £69.

Went back within thr hour (hurrah, 1 costume fitted) and attempted the return at customer service desk. 3 returns to process.

They were:
£9 costume on sale
£10
£20

I expect a £39 refund.

The customer service rep says it is a £39.43 refund that I'm entitled to, because I used a £1 voucher it influenced the refund value as it applies to the costume too.

I asked if the 57p will go back onto my loyalty voucher value, she said no.

What would you have done in that situation? What's a reasonable refund value?

A - be happy with £38.43
B - er, you returned £39 of goods so they need to make it right to £39 value even if it's on a gift card
C - £39.43 refund due back.

I won't drip feed, I'll share here that the customer service desk lady insisted on A. I insisted on B and asked to speak to a manager. Management was called who tried to give me a £38.43 credit card refund then give me a £1 gift card (which I explained was too much).

It’s a non issue really, enjoy your pool party and forget about pence

PeriPeriMayo · Today 13:20

Bit confused....why would you be due 39.43 if the total being returned was £39?

desperatemum1234 · Today 13:22

Jesus h christ OP

Option D: Forget about the 0.57p and enjoy the rest of my weekend.

MasterBeth · Today 13:23

I would not give a flying fuck.

capelmustard · Today 13:23

Why on earth would you care? What can you buy with pence these days?

Please don't say it's a matter of principle, life's too short for this kind of thing

notatinydancer · Today 13:23

Because she’d used a 57p voucher.
@GertysBestShoesAre you really getting that annoyed about 57p ?

RobertaFirmino · Today 13:24

I'll send you 57p myself if it helps.

This. Jeezo, op. Life’s too short. Enjoy your party!

amber763 · Today 13:25

You took time to post about 57p?

Turtlestarfish · Today 13:25

This cannot be a serious post 🤯

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · Today 13:26

You asked to see the manager over 57p?

You can’t even buy a Twix with 57p these days.

Malinia · Today 13:27

It's interesting how many replies are quite happy for a huge multinational corporation to take their money.

I would have accepted the option with the gift card even though it was too much

EverMissWicklowSometimes · Today 13:27

Was it Tesco? I can't remember the details but I got similarly stung with a refund when I'd used Clubcard vouchers to get a discount a while back. Mine was for a few quid though, I wouldn't be fussed about 57p!

MsIceSandwich · Today 13:27

Let me guess OP, it's the principle 🙄

Esmeraldathe3rd · Today 13:29

It's only a few pence but you're right. It wasn't a percentage off. So whether the vouchers all count against those specific purchases or not at all, or partially, you're owned exactly 39 quid or the voucher equivalent.

12345onceIcaughta · Today 13:29

I would’ve happily accepted what was offered as I would be 43p in credit.
but I wouldn’t have accepted losing the 57p as the items had been returned so I would expect a full £39 refund.
the shops make enough profit.

MayaPyjama · Today 13:31

Are your numbers in the post right?

Fluffyscrubberdo · Today 13:32

The money in the rewards is akin to a coupon code, per rata you only laud £38.43 for the items so you only get the same back.

inkgirl · Today 13:34

Happily expect as they arent usually meant to be able to expect returns on anything that touches private area due to hygiene reasons regardless of whether the label is still on it

ShowOfHands · Today 13:35

E) dig around down the back of the sofa for the spare change

F) call the police

G) set up a year long scam operation which neatly results in you getting 57p out of the jobsworth employee

H) move on

Yes, but she's lost the value of the coupon. If you use a coupon on an item you return, you should get it 'back' to use again, otherwise it's really unfair.

ShowOfHands · Today 13:36

I) lobby the government

J) organise a march

K) take in some ironing until you've earned the 57p back

L) go on a spa day

Whaleandsnail6 · Today 13:37

I have read this so many times and I can't make it make sense! Where does the random 43p come from?!

I feel a bit stupid as everyone else seems to get it!

ShowOfHands · Today 13:38

M) write to the local press

N) sell your story to Hollywood

O) rob a busker

P) sign up to do surveys online until you've clawed back the 57p

Q) go for a walk and let it go
