Today me and my OH are going for drinks and food in a city around 30 mins train from our city.
I am at a concert on Friday and there’s a shop that has a top I’m looking for (we don’t have the shop in our city ) I plan on wearing it for the concert.
I checked and it’s in stock
So I said I’m just gonna pop in and grab it
He said “no we aren’t shopping today ,your off work all week ,go and get it another day “
I told him I know we aren’t shopping ,I just want this specific top.
Im literally walking past the shop to get to the area with the pubs.
So now I’m gonna have to go back tomorrow (1 hour travel there and back ,plus another train fare”

Aibu to be a bit annoyed ?
I asked him again and he went in a mood so I just said fine il go another day.

How very odd, is it a religious thing where you need to obey? Why wouldn’t you just go and buy the top when passing?

What a controlling dick. YANBU…HE is BU and I think you should carefully consider whether you want to be with someone that a) you have to ask permission to go in a shop and b) would make such a sulky big deal over you taking 5mins to do something

So wonderfully mumsnet. Leave your husband over a minor disagreement regarding going to a shop. What utter over the top nonsense people spout on here.

OP, tell him he’ll have to sit in the pub on his own for 10 mins.

Or yes, divorce him. Either/or.

Because you can bet this is the tip of the iceberg.

Can you? Sounds like a very minor disagreement among a married couple. Maybe there are other issues maybe not. The instant assumption that she could reconsider her marriage without any context is insane nonsense. But sadly very typical on here. Some posters really do love to dial up the drama.

sarahsunshine1 · 02/08/2026 18:29

You don't answer to him! The reason you are getting it is because you are passing. Just tell him it doesn't make sense to go in and out another day. If he gets grumpy that's his own fault and tell him to loosen up. You don't need to apologise for that. If he doesn't like it he can walk on!

MyObservations · 02/08/2026 19:27

I have to agree with @ThatSunnyCrow; the responses on here are typically "Mumsnet" and mostly inappropriate in my opinion. This isn't about controlling, obeying, domineering etc; perhaps he just doesn't like shopping. Lots of people I know, male and female, really don't like shopping. It's not a sin not to like shopping! Clearly we don't know enough about this but the notion of leaving him over this is just plain ridiculous.

smallbutgood · 02/08/2026 22:27

He's a selfish pratt. Go and get your top!!

CleverOpalPanda · 03/08/2026 08:09

He seems a bit selfish to not consider the trouble you would go of you went another day,is he controlling and inconsiderate in other ways as well ?

Pickles16 · 03/08/2026 11:39

How about the food shop? Bet he likes to eat doesn't he? He sounds like a control freak.

DH001 · 03/08/2026 19:14

Can you afford the purchase? if you cannot, then you shouldn't buy it

Nettie1964 · 04/08/2026 13:31

This really isnt normal. Do you have to ask permission about such a trivial thing. Its crazy.

She posts multiple threads but then doesn’t engage so I’m not sure what she’s looking for.

Probably info for her next badly written, self published book or something.

OP if you are genuine, why do you never come back? I hope you find the strength to leave him and start believing in yourself.

knobrot99 · 04/08/2026 15:43

Based on your account only, and limited context

You could have just got it faster than the discussion about getting it took. If it is your money and your time then don't ask permission.

Maybe he cherishes every minute he gets with you?

He hates shopping ,so anytime I suggest any sort of shops ,he kicks off

But you're not asking him to go shopping with you. You're going to go in one shop to buy one thing, and he can wait for you in the pub or do something else.

Gilly2901 · 08/08/2026 14:19

My husband would not have any issue with me going for my top.It does sound like he is being quite controlling & very unreasonable!

Can I ask is this the way he usually is?
