Mil stepping on my toes in small ways

Itsablondebobkindaday · 25/07/2026 18:06

I would really love some opinions here. I’m happy to be told I’m being unreasonable because I suspect I am being a little touchy and this is very much sweating the small stuff. There’s nothing big where I feel like I’d be justified in saying anything. It’s a lot of little things but it’s really getting me down. So it’s a mil one. Me and dp have a four month old. She’s dp’s only child and the only grandchild for his mother. Mil obviously dotes on dd but it is becoming overbearing and little things are adding up and making me quite annoyed. She’s very opinionated and believes her opinions are right. Truthfully I find her quite disrespectful of anyone else’s feelings or opinions.

She’s started asking to have dd for the day on her own. She has her alone for a good 9/10 hours. I was far from ready for this but dp clearly didn’t want to upset her so I felt like I had to agree. I’ve realised after seeing some pictures from the first time that she’s got a full set of clothes for her that she’s obviously keeping at hers and changing her into as soon as she gets to hers. The lovely outfits I put her in come back barely worn in the changing bag along with all the spares I’ve packed. I can’t help but feel like she’s been seen as a little doll to play dress up with.

My next niggle was regarding car seats. She lives not far off an hour away and it’s mostly motorway driving. Therefore I was extremely selective about what car seat I bought while pregnant and explained to dp that I wanted this car seat used until she’s outgrown it as it has an excellent safety record. Mil has bought her own which I wasn’t made aware of until she turned up with it. It’s not as safe as ours and I’m upset that something I put a lot of thought into and wanted my daughter to use is discarded without so much as a word about it to me. I get that eventually she would have had to get one for her car but I was hoping it would be when dd was a bit older and more solid and that maybe the choice was at least run by me first.

Dd has a dummy. I know many people don’t like them but I have several children who have all had one and no teeth issues. I also like that there’s research suggesting they may slightly protect against SIDS. Mil despises dummies and pretty much told us that dd wasn’t having one. This has led dp to hide the fact we use one until he accidentally posted a photo with it in sight. Mil was not happy about this. I’m concerned of her ever having dd overnight because I know she will let dd scream all night rather than just give her the dummy.

I’m prepared to hear I’m being precious first born about the previous issues (even though this is far from my first!) but this one has got to me. I really don’t like cold water sterilisers and Milton. I personally believe if we can sterilise a bottle without chemicals why would we want to use them. Mil is the total opposite and doesn’t believe things are clean unless there chemically sterilised. When she was a few days old I did use Milton to sterilise to appease her and dd exorcism style projectile vomited her whole feed up. A week later mil was down and we tried again and the same thing happened which led me to conclude that she was better with steam sterilised bottles. Anyway the last two times mil has had dd, the following day she’s been vomiting large quantities up which I’ve found strange. Then dp let slip that mil doesn’t use the bottles we provide. She has her own which knowing her have been sterilised in Milton. While it’s such a tiny thing it’s really bothering me. It’s the one thing I have actively stood up and said to her I don’t like and she’s decided my feelings on it do not matter and done it anyway.

I learnt this morning that she now has her own stroller for dd at her house for when she’s old enough to use it. Again, a very small thing in the grand scheme of things but why is she so adamant to not use anything that I’ve carefully chosen for my daughter. I’m actually starting to question if she thinks my things aren’t good enough.

Dd came back from the last trip bathed and with all her cradle cap scrubbed off. She was bathed the night before so didn’t need a bath but I accept that she could have vomited/had an explosive poo. Dd doesn’t have bad cradle cap to begin with but I wanted it to fall out naturally because when I used products on her sibling lots of her hair came out with it. I had explained this.

Sorry that was long! I’m just feeling really down about it and then I feel pathetic for feeling down about it. None of it is awful. None of it feels worth causing an argument over but I don’t like feeling upset about it. I’m also somewhat concerned what the future is going to look like and the potential for this to become a bigger problem.

OP you're a bit of sucker where this guy is concerned, aren't you? You are financing him as well as paying for your joint child, while he spends his money on a hobby.

Return the car. Cancel the insurance. Yes it will be a lot of wasted money, but less than you are wasting by continuing to fund his lifestyle while he does, rankly, fuck all for you except cause you stress.

And for God's sake, don't marry the guy (which he might actually propose if he thinks you are going to stop funding his lifestyle). You do not want to be financially entangled with someone like this.

Is the house yours? Can you afford to run it on your own?

Ilovecakey · 27/07/2026 16:39

Stop letting her take her. She's your baby and you dont like how she is treating her so stop her. Only let her hsve supervised contact and never let her sterilise or make a bottle or change her.

I'm glad you've out your foot down OP. I felt really sad reading this because it really came through in your writing how hard you're finding it having your 4 month old away for the whole day for no reason.

I find it very odd thats she's dressing her up and then putting her in the clothes you had originally sent her in. She's not looking after the baby with the baby as a priority and that it what raises the biggest flag for me! She can disagree with you on everything if she wants but prioritising what she's wearing, it's even as simple as the hassle she's putting her through to change her when it's completely unnecessary. It would make me worry about what else she's prioritising over her basic needs.

NewHere83 · 27/07/2026 16:46

At this point your focus needs to be on making sure your mil (via) DP doesn't get joint custody. Stop the visits now. Stay with DP a few more months. Don't let him take DD off anywhere in the car (he's taking her to MIL). So that when you split it's clear you're the only one doing any childcare.

Otherwise you'll effectively end up having shared custody with MIL.

What are you talking about? It’s her fourth child. Weird comment unless I’m completely missing the point?

I was answering @EvieBB's question "what does PFB mean".

Ilovecakey · 27/07/2026 16:50

I've just read all of your posts OP and seen about the car. Is it possible for you to take it back now? If not id probably sell it. How dare he let you buy his car for hik but not take you out in it or spend all his money on a hobby! I woukd sell the car and get rid of him then you will never have to see his mum again either!

Oh ffs. He’s just come in and the reason she’s calling constantly is to ask is she can have her overnight. This feels like it can’t get any worse.

What value does he add to your life or does he just take?

Please try and take the car back so you’re not saddled with his debt and cut his loser out of your life. Thank your lucky stars you’re not married.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 27/07/2026 16:54

And do block his mother’s phone number so she can’t harass you

Its not just the issue of debt. If he has got a car it will be much easier for him to take the baby away to wherever. OP remove his access to the car as a matter of urgency

The answer is NO. No more visits. She is a 4 month old baby. Not some toy to be played with.

If she wants to see your DD then she can drive over to you to see her for a couple of hours.

Why are you even with this man?

As for the car, return it. Driving to work for what is a 10 min walk?!

Oh my goodness 4 months is far too young. Totally unnecessary. She needs to be with you. Your husband should have your back on this, he sounds awful.

Abitlosttoday · 27/07/2026 17:42

Itsablondebobkindaday · 25/07/2026 18:18

Ironically she’s not even close to my first born! I have more than the average, you’d think I’d be so happy for the help the door would be slamming shut behind them.

I think the real issue is that I’m not ready for her to be away from me, especially for that long. That feeling is then intensified because I don’t trust mil to follow any wishes that aren’t her own. Dp is useless where his mother is concerned. She tends to shut down anything he says and I get the impression he’s scared of rocking the boat with her. He’s happier for me to be upset than he is to potentially cause issues with her.

If you're not ready, you need to say no. Loudly. I can't imagine many mums would be ready. I definitely would not have wanted this at four months. She's a tiny baby.

MrsLaundryMountain · 27/07/2026 17:51

i would not voluntarily part for 9 hours with my 4 month old baby. That’s the answer. I think this is a big thing btw

67eleven · 27/07/2026 18:11

Eww, it's just not right is it?
Wanting to regularly take a 4 month old an hour away on a motorway back to her own house for an entire day. Unneccesarily undressing and redressing a baby. Unneccesrily bathing a baby and scrubbing its head (if it had been because of a poo explosion, surely the soiled clothes would have been bagged and returned). Insisting on chemically sterilising baby equipment when you've expressed that is not your preference, in the knowledge that it may have contributed to your baby being unwell. Refusing to give a baby a dummy when the baby likes it in the knowledge that it can help reduce the risk of SIDS. That and taking her from you and not giving her back for feeding and changing and saying that she's bored revolts me. What else is she whispering to her when you're not there. And now she wants her overnight - its all wrong.

None of this is for the wellbeing and happiness of your baby, its all for your MIL.

Don't some babies start to get separation anxiety from about 4 months??

Edited to add: get a sling so she can't just take her off you

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 27/07/2026 18:11

Your DP sounds pathetic OMG.

If you split up, every time he has your DD your MIL will actually be having her. That much is clear.

So I would put FIRM boundaries down and stick it out for a while longer.

gardenflowergirl · 27/07/2026 18:12

This is not a relationship that is going to work long term. You need to plan your exit and that includes getting rid of the car as you don't drive. Take charge.
Just text MIL no , all visits stopped as baby is unsettled when she returns. Your baby needs to bond with you at such a young age.

smoothorangejuice · 27/07/2026 18:22

You must be a very hard working mum; you clearly don’t need him. Go to therapy, prioritise yourself and your children. Stop mothering adult males, you deserve to be cared for too. Thinking of you!

TwoBagsOfCompost · 27/07/2026 18:44

God OP you have been extremely accommodating with this! Not only you are 10000000% not unreasonable to be annoyed, but I wouldn’t ever ever ever let my 4 month old be away from me for so long and in that setup! You’ve been too kind. Stop being that kind honestly! You’re unhappy with your DD being away from you, so put an end to it. Best of luck!

Yikes OP, I just read all for your posts. This guy is the definition of ick 😵‍💫🫣😫😖 I hate being that person but it really sounds like you should get rid. Definitely do not marry him!

As for his mum ringing to have your DD overnight, you just answer the phone and tell her NO. No apologies, no excuses, just you are not happy to have your DD away from you and it won’t happen again. You can take her to visit on x day.

You absolutely have a DP problem though. This isn’t a MIL problem. But I’m sure you know.

Be strong!

Op you need to stand up to her she’s not in her right mind thinking she can just take your dd when she pleases. Send her a message I appreciate you offering to have dd overnight but she’s far too young to be gone that long and that note I am not letting you have her every week for the day you don’t respect my wishes about Milton and you have made her poorly on two separate occasions so as you are not putting my dd needs first I think we should wait until i am ready also she has a dummy so you have to get used to that. Thanks.
