Mil stepping on my toes in small ways

Itsablondebobkindaday · 25/07/2026 18:06

I would really love some opinions here. I’m happy to be told I’m being unreasonable because I suspect I am being a little touchy and this is very much sweating the small stuff. There’s nothing big where I feel like I’d be justified in saying anything. It’s a lot of little things but it’s really getting me down. So it’s a mil one. Me and dp have a four month old. She’s dp’s only child and the only grandchild for his mother. Mil obviously dotes on dd but it is becoming overbearing and little things are adding up and making me quite annoyed. She’s very opinionated and believes her opinions are right. Truthfully I find her quite disrespectful of anyone else’s feelings or opinions.

She’s started asking to have dd for the day on her own. She has her alone for a good 9/10 hours. I was far from ready for this but dp clearly didn’t want to upset her so I felt like I had to agree. I’ve realised after seeing some pictures from the first time that she’s got a full set of clothes for her that she’s obviously keeping at hers and changing her into as soon as she gets to hers. The lovely outfits I put her in come back barely worn in the changing bag along with all the spares I’ve packed. I can’t help but feel like she’s been seen as a little doll to play dress up with.

My next niggle was regarding car seats. She lives not far off an hour away and it’s mostly motorway driving. Therefore I was extremely selective about what car seat I bought while pregnant and explained to dp that I wanted this car seat used until she’s outgrown it as it has an excellent safety record. Mil has bought her own which I wasn’t made aware of until she turned up with it. It’s not as safe as ours and I’m upset that something I put a lot of thought into and wanted my daughter to use is discarded without so much as a word about it to me. I get that eventually she would have had to get one for her car but I was hoping it would be when dd was a bit older and more solid and that maybe the choice was at least run by me first.

Dd has a dummy. I know many people don’t like them but I have several children who have all had one and no teeth issues. I also like that there’s research suggesting they may slightly protect against SIDS. Mil despises dummies and pretty much told us that dd wasn’t having one. This has led dp to hide the fact we use one until he accidentally posted a photo with it in sight. Mil was not happy about this. I’m concerned of her ever having dd overnight because I know she will let dd scream all night rather than just give her the dummy.

I’m prepared to hear I’m being precious first born about the previous issues (even though this is far from my first!) but this one has got to me. I really don’t like cold water sterilisers and Milton. I personally believe if we can sterilise a bottle without chemicals why would we want to use them. Mil is the total opposite and doesn’t believe things are clean unless there chemically sterilised. When she was a few days old I did use Milton to sterilise to appease her and dd exorcism style projectile vomited her whole feed up. A week later mil was down and we tried again and the same thing happened which led me to conclude that she was better with steam sterilised bottles. Anyway the last two times mil has had dd, the following day she’s been vomiting large quantities up which I’ve found strange. Then dp let slip that mil doesn’t use the bottles we provide. She has her own which knowing her have been sterilised in Milton. While it’s such a tiny thing it’s really bothering me. It’s the one thing I have actively stood up and said to her I don’t like and she’s decided my feelings on it do not matter and done it anyway.

I learnt this morning that she now has her own stroller for dd at her house for when she’s old enough to use it. Again, a very small thing in the grand scheme of things but why is she so adamant to not use anything that I’ve carefully chosen for my daughter. I’m actually starting to question if she thinks my things aren’t good enough.

Dd came back from the last trip bathed and with all her cradle cap scrubbed off. She was bathed the night before so didn’t need a bath but I accept that she could have vomited/had an explosive poo. Dd doesn’t have bad cradle cap to begin with but I wanted it to fall out naturally because when I used products on her sibling lots of her hair came out with it. I had explained this.

Sorry that was long! I’m just feeling really down about it and then I feel pathetic for feeling down about it. None of it is awful. None of it feels worth causing an argument over but I don’t like feeling upset about it. I’m also somewhat concerned what the future is going to look like and the potential for this to become a bigger problem.

You need driving lessons ASAP.

And drive your car...
His dm needs to frankly fuck off.

Oh ffs. He’s just come in and the reason she’s calling constantly is to ask is she can have her overnight. This feels like it can’t get any worse.

Well obviously the answer is no. She can't have your baby overnight.

As your partner is only using the car that you have financed for his own benefit, I'd sell it if I were you.

Don't marry this guy. He's in thrall to his dreadful mother and he treats you like shit. You deserve so much better than this.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 27/07/2026 15:19

Tulipsriver · 27/07/2026 14:59

I'm pretty sure the OP will care whether her baby is distressed even if she's not there to hear it... what bizarre advice.

It's not "bizarre advice" but as there was a fairly major dripfeed as the thread went on I added the last sentence as clearly there are much bigger concerns.

Rosegard · 27/07/2026 15:25

OMG, you are in an abusive relationship and you have brought a complete loser into your home, taking on debt for him.

For goodness sake wake up.

Your poor children.
Get this loser out of your home now and reach out to domestic abuse charities.

You and those poor children need support.

He's a liar who is using you.
He didn't want children.
He wanted you stuck and controllable.

You need support.
His mother will control him to get 50/50 with this baby.

TheMimsy · 27/07/2026 15:30

@Itsablondebobkindaday are you in a position to learn to drive. Even without telling him maybe? Can a friend or childminder or anyone other than his mother babysit for an hour or two (unless you do a condensed week long course) so you can pass and build up more independence and use the car yourself.

this isn’t a partner. This is a manchild playing house.

when you eventually have enough he’ll be straight back at mummy’s.

a car because he can’t be arsed with a 10
minute walk. Ffs.

good luck.

I agree.

Your partner had a baby to give to his mom. He used you for car financing to he didn't have to walk 10 minutes to work. How do you finance a car on maternity leave if you work and don't drive?

I think you're being financially abused and he used you as an incubator.

Do whatever you have to to get rid of the car obligation. Do you have a cooling down period after big purchases? I'd be selling that back to the dealer if everything else failed, he really fucked you over here.

TourdeCrema · 27/07/2026 15:33

I’d start dropping hints that you’re not happy about the Milton’s as coincidentally baby has been sick on their return to you each time

then you say, if you’re not going to respect my wishes then the babysitting will have to stop

id not put your dp in the middle, if he doesn’t want to rock the boat he needs to stay out of it and let you and mil sort out between you

Floatingdownriver · 27/07/2026 15:41

You have a husband issue. He needs to care about your feelings more than hers.

EvieBB · 27/07/2026 15:43

coronafiona · 25/07/2026 18:11

You are being PFB I’m afraid. Be very very grateful for the help and don’t sweat the small stuff like clothes. I would ask to buy her a car seat of the brand of your choice though. And be prepared to hurt her feelings so do it very kindly but stand your ground on that one.

What's PFB please?

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 27/07/2026 15:45

Precious first born ... acting like you're the only one to have ever had a baby and the merest caress of the lightest zephyr will give them their death of cold.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 27/07/2026 15:49

@Itsablondebobkindaday you must be in some degree of shock at the moment - got the feeling that some scales are raining from your eyes at the moment.

As a few PP's have said, you need to stop the MiL taking your baby - if she chooses to fight through solicitors for contact, and she is not a suitable person to have contact!, she could argue that she's been a caregiver from the baby's earliest weeks.

How has your partner been with your other children?

Honestly, I think the idea of taking all the car keys and keeping them safe WELL away from him is essential.

See how he reacts to that. If he's angry - he's been using you. If he is genuinely willing to talk, listen and change his ways with his own behavour and the way he's acting towards you re his mother, then maybe there's hope. But I'm very much afraid it looks like he's been using you from beginning to end. Please take steps to protect yourself here, financially and with your baby.

It can get worse - she could actually go to your MIL’s overnight.

I think you have some hard thinking to do about your relationship. Whatever you decide, do what’s right for you. Whatever is right for you is actually right for your children because they will benefit from having a mum who is not exhausted, stressed and constantly questioning her instincts. I really hope it gets better for you because life sounds really bloody hard for you right now and it shouldn’t be.

What are you talking about? It’s her fourth child. Weird comment unless I’m completely missing the point?

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2026 15:54

Crikey I thought this would be 'MIL gave baby a rusk for her snack' or "let's her nap for too long' in her buggy. YANBU she's using your daughter as the baby girl she never had.

KnitFastDieWarm · 27/07/2026 15:56

@Itsablondebobkindaday I’m also divorced and have a new(ish) DP. Let’s do a quick comparison.

My DP stands up to his family (and mine) when needed, probably puts more effort in to playing with my DC than I do, is a dedicated father to his DC, drives us all anywhere we need to go, organises and pays for all food shopping and bills and holidays, respects me and listens to me, is great fun to be around, personally designed and had a really meaningful engagement ring made for me, and is an independent grown man who doesn’t need basic life admin explained to him by his mother 🤔

Your ‘DP’ can’t say no to his mum, is happy to leech money off you while you’re on maternity leave without giving you the security of marriage, can’t be arsed to take your kids out in the car, lies to you about where he’s taking your tiny baby, has a shit credit rating, is too lazy to walk ten minutes to work, doesn’t give you a break to relax, doesn’t respect your judgement, doesn’t do his fair share of parenting, sounds like he adds bugger all value as a stepfather to your older DC, and would rather his tiny baby daughter is sick than stand up for her needs.

I’m guessing your exH was a total abusive arse, so in comparison this guy seems ok? it’s an easy trap to fall into, but now it’s time to get out.

You sound lovely and you deserve better - he’s not the one. Get rid.

nutbrownhare15 · 27/07/2026 16:01

Just wtf. Who the hell does she think she is that she gets to demand her grandchild for 9-10 hours and refuse the mother's wishes on car seats, bottles, rubbing the cradle cap off? You are her mother. I appreciate you do t want to upset mil but you know best and if she can't go with your wishes she shouldn't have her at all. It's really not normal in my experience for a mother in law to have this influence. It must feel scary to speak up but get a united front with your husband and stand up for yourself for your daughter's sake.

nam3c4ang3 · 27/07/2026 16:01

The answer - IS NO.

put your foot down and protect you baby! and please ffs decide if you really want to be with this useless partner of yours who does fuck all.

Wowthatwasabigstep · 27/07/2026 16:03

I mean this gently, start practicing No. Stop DD from going to MIL with immediate effect you don’t need to elaborate just tell her that it doesn’t work for you anymore.

Tell MIL what will be happening and for goodness sake have an honest conversation with your partner, at 4 months your child needs to be with you not with a woman who does not listen to your wishes.

Did you bother reading the full thread? This is her fourth child. Her previous three was from her ex husband.

The poster was answering a question and explaining to a previous poster what PFB meant she wasn’t casting judgement.

Maybe you should read the thread.

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 27/07/2026 16:16

You need to get rid of your useless wet mummy's boy p for a start, he can go back to mummy.

Get rid of the car. And it’s driver

Op, honest question, are there any positive to your relationship?

I don't think you have said a single good thing about your partner but definitely a lot of negatives!

MrsVBS · 27/07/2026 16:27

You need to speak up, she’s your child so you make the rules, why on earth is she going to your MIL for 9/10 hours. If you don’t like the arrangement say so and make it clear your views as a parent are being disrespected so she won’t be visiting again until you feel ready.
