to think that "eating fish and chips" is just lunch/dinner, not a holiday activity?!

Seen this on a few threads lately, and when I asked a couple of years ago about ideas of what to do in the evening on hols in the UK, this was the line trotted out most! "Walk along the promenade eating fish and chips". For a start I hate eating when walking, its messy and inconvenient and secondly, what about the other 6 evenings in a week or are we meant to do it every single night?

In most places these days you can't "eat fish and chips on the front" anyway because you get mugged by fucking sea gulls!

Each to their own.

I enjoy fish and chips by the sea. We’d usually find a nice spot away from the seagulls with a nice view and enjoy the food.

What things do you enjoy and find acceptable holiday activities?

In a restaurant, fine. Its the "sitting by the sea" bit, as if it is somehow an "experience" as a pp said!

The odd time we have had fish and chips on holiday it has been so bloody expensive, I would rather pay a wee bit more for a restaurant! Were we go on holiday its £20 for a small fish and chips, fuck off am I paying that!

Blimey, that’s pricy. Must be quite a posh town/area?

I live 500m from a beach on the south coast, and a small fish and chips is £10 at my local chippy.

I agree a meal is an activity, ypu can easily go out to dinner and spend 2 hours or more over your meal.

eating fish and chips from some paper either when walking or sitting and spending a whole ten mins doing it, is not in that category for me at all.

technically yes it’s an activity. But it’s a very quick one and I certainly don’t see any evenings activity as something that takes me ten mins.

When we get fish and chips and take them to the beach (which we do a lot in summer - we live near the coast) we probably spend around 90 minutes at the beach. The kids run around, play football. DH and I sit and chat, if it's a really warm evening I might let my dinner go down a bit then have a sea swim (we did that a few times in the June/early July heatwave!). We might go for a walk down the promenade to get an ice cream, then walk back eating them. It's like taking a picnic to the park - you don't sit down, eat and then leap straight up and go home - you spend some time in the park. So yes, both of those count as activities as well as meals to me.

TheRealMagic · 26/07/2026 15:29

Out of interest, if eating fish and chips on the beach isn't an activity, is going to a pub beer garden and ordering fish and chips one?

No! It’s just ‘having something to eat’!

Ok. I absolutely think going to the pub for dinner is an activity.

Ibi · 26/07/2026 15:43

I hate eating fish and chips with my hands on a beach! I prefer a proper plate and cutlery.

intrepidpanda · 26/07/2026 15:50

Its both. Just like going to a restaurant can be a night out or just food.

Maccy Ds is neither restaurant or food.

MaryFromGlasgow · 26/07/2026 16:15

I live near the sea so not a holiday thing for me. However, the cost these days means it isn’t regular either.

Bang! But don't you think that having fewer expectations out of life made people happy. For example I am a big fan of Radio and Radio 4 has a consumer programme called you and yours. It has a weekly phone in and one week it was about debt. This bloke rang in to say he was £30k in debt on benefits as he was disabled and it was the banks fault as it was easy to lie to them. When asked why he was in debt he replied "my children deserve holidays". In my mind no one deserves a holiday. You deserve water, food, shelter, warmth and freedom from oppression not a bloody trip to Benadorm.

I heard that! Madness.
PyongyangKipperbang off topic totally (and as a vegan I have no stake in this game so I'll shush) but can you explain to me what the film that's your namesake is about please? I watched it as a child and I couldn't figure it out.

I am not miserable at all thanks, just wondering why on earth fish and chips by the sea is seen as so special. It really isnt!

I live in a seaside town, locals regularly eat fish and chips by the harbour or seafront. You do really sound miserable! You don't enjoy it? Fine but why compolain about others?

JJMama · 26/07/2026 17:38

Totally agree. Whilst fish and chips is a tradition by the sea, it’s hardly an ‘activity’! Like eating a Cornish pasty in Cornwall or Devon cream tea, in well, Devon… it’s just the traditional food.

Miyagi99 · 26/07/2026 17:49

Always have fish and chips when near the seaside, either on the front, in a restaurant/cafe or at the holiday cottage. For one night/afternoon only, wouldn’t eat 2 nights on the run and don’t know anyone that would.

FFSItsTooHot · 26/07/2026 18:03

I think that fish and chips always taste better from places on the coast. However,I certainly wouldn't walk along the promenade eating them! Much to messy and greasy! I like to find a nice cafe or restaurant to eat in. I don't look on it as 'an activity' on holiday,I schedule it in for lunch or dinner 5 times a couple of times during the week.

I think you’ve answered your own AIBU. Fish and Chips are expensive now, it’s more of a treat than a bog standard dinner.

Goatsarebest · 26/07/2026 18:37

You're not wrong about seagulls being a threat to humanity, though. They are evolving quicker than rouge AI and have less morality than Elon Musk. Forget climate change, seagulls are are biggest worry at the moment.

Snackccident · 26/07/2026 18:45

I think its a reflection of modern life and how things that were once considered a treat are now commonplace. Although we may be coming around full circle as prices go up and what was once ordinary is now once again viewed as a treat.

You were mugged! That’s a ridiculous price - only places I’ve paid anywhere near that were fancy gastropubs like the Mariners in Rock

Lotsofsnacks · 26/07/2026 19:34

It was a suggestion, not a gun to head, go get fish n chips! A lot of Brit holidaymakers live inland and have crap fish n chips, so it’s lovely to have fresh local ones by the sea at some point, during a uk coastal break.

It’s not an activity as such, no, but does it matter, it was recommendation that no one has to adhere to! I personally love it.

go to a restaurant if you want for a few hours and spend a bit more, an actual ‘activity’

all ‘experiences’ are subjective and why be judgmental on what others like

Findyourdomain · 26/07/2026 19:49

I think the location, the atmosphere, the occasion, your hunger levels all play a part in how good food tastes. We went for a walk with a friend along a beach close to their holiday house in France - after a long walk he went to get a picnic he had brought. Basically a baguette, ham and cheese - all top quality items and a little bottle of cold beer. Amazing - one of the best most memorable lunches I’ve had, I wasn’t expecting to get fed, I was so hungry - it was so simple, so perfect. It was most definitely an experience! I can fully imagine fish & chips by the beach having the same impact.

Juced · 26/07/2026 20:10

I think you could be thinking to deeply about it it's just an off the cuff saying...although seas side chippy is always nicer!
