My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

My DCs were 'free range' from a young age (as was I). Tracking wasn't even on the horizon.

My DCs never missed a meal or were late for one. They came home when they were hungry and a meal was always nearly ready. Same as me. No watches either. This was always the case until they left home.

Sometimes DH and I would go out for the day (they were teens) and a meal was left cooking. I don't know how but we all arrived to sit down and eat at the same time (telepathy?).

was your boyfriend seriously ill as a child , or was he the only child with no father around? Those sorts of scenarios breed this enmeshed behaviour. A friend I grew up with up with is enmeshed with her mother, she can’t make any decisions without her mother dictating, I can no longer be friends with her because I am basically friends with a child not an adult and her mother interferes constantly in plans . I’ve tried to gently explain this to my friend , she declared that her mother is her best friend. Her husband is treated like a spare wheel in their family it’s so sad . It’s worrying that your boyfriend doesn’t find it intrusive so unfortunately either you have to sign up for having this constant monitoring in your life or just leave . For what it’s worth the monitoring isn’t about safety or concern it’s about saying wherever you go, whatever you do I will always be here getting involved there is no escape , yuk makes me shudder , is she baby reindeer?!

Find my friends, life 360 or whatever doesn’t bother me.

We have 2 friends on it, my sister, me, DH and my mum (DH has my mum too). Doesn’t bother any of us, but no one has alerts, mum every now and then might be like “oooo what are you doing in XYZ” but we would do the same to her - once in a blue moon.

Your DHs mum has gone too far!!

Paradoxinreality · 26/07/2026 18:36

If you have family with this man your babies will not be yours, they will be theirs, plus all the stalking from that very unoccupied woman! I am afraid you would be better off without that relationship

zanahoria · 26/07/2026 18:39

It's a bit weird but if he hides nothing from his mum then there won't be any other skeletons in the closet

safetyfreak · 26/07/2026 18:41

Is it that bad? my 14 year old DD is on life 360 with me and my husband. I think it would be good if she stayed on it as an adult, not so I can be nosy and track her...more that its there if there ever was any trouble. You never know do you?

That’s not what has been described though is it?

Alittlewordinyourear · 26/07/2026 18:44

My immediate family all share locations - nothing weird.

helali · 26/07/2026 18:47

I have a tracker on my family so we all now were each person is. My mum is in our group too. She often calls and ask what I doing in a certain place. I added my mum as she's 87 I want to keep an eye on her but she keeps an eye on me, hubby and my kids instead. She loves it and said it's the highlight of her day seeing when we are all home from work and school, it doesn't bother any of us and I love keeping her happy. But you shouldn't feel obliged to be added to your partners and his mums list. If it's a list for just you and your boyfriend, that's ok. It's not for everyone though.

amyds2104 · 26/07/2026 18:47

The sharing location isn’t weird in my opinion. However the messages are odd and starting conversations about the location. Bizarre.

axolotlfloof · 26/07/2026 18:49

I wouldn't like it and I don't track my teenagers either.
If he and she are happy then leave them to it, but don't share your location with them.

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 26/07/2026 18:49

It’s weird he’s ok with his intrusive she is. Sharing location isn’t weird but her behaviour is.

My MIL asked my DW to share location while we were travelling around Europe. DW was happy to, then when we got back there was a few years where she was monitoring and passive aggressive if we were in FIL or my parents cities. As she was jealous. DW didn’t feel able to stop sharing so she upgraded her phone early so she could switch it off and blame the new phone. MIL is very toxic and DW avoidant so never wanted to cause an argument

Bagsofcharacter · 26/07/2026 18:49

My Family mostly share on FINDMY it’s 2026 and people go missing. You have found a very caring man who keeps his Mum in the loop. It works both ways and so he can keep half an eye on his Mum without physically having to visit her. Be glad as you actually have his physical company and time. His Mum mostly just has the App.

ColdWaterDipper · 26/07/2026 18:52

I’m 45 and share my location with my mum - I think she likes to see what I’m up to, and it’s helpful if we are meeting up or she is picking up one of my children (me, DH, 2 kids, my older brother and my mum are all on iPhone find my friend). However she wouldn’t ever comment on where I was other than a “I saw you got there safely” if we were going on holiday or something. I know she does check it, but not every day or anything. I think it’s pretty normal to share location amongst family but the questions and popping in seems odd for a chap in his 30s.

Another drop and run thread where the OP never comes back.

They’re getting tedious.

Maybe she is coming to terms with the fact that her boyfriend is 31 with an umbilical cord still attached.
I think MN threads can probably be hard on the poster when they write something thinking “this is a bit weird, isn’t it?” and then find out their whole relationship is probably doomed ☹️

Happyjoe · 26/07/2026 18:53

Weird that he shares his location but can see if being handy on an emergency, bloody horrible that she tracks him all day long. Passion killer for me.

jellyfish798 · 26/07/2026 18:54

Run like the wind. God help you if you have kids with this man, she will be the mother in law from hell with trackers on every family member's phone. She has an unhealthy relationship with tech, and with her son!

The "if you've nothing to hide" psychology is the road to controlling behaviour. Don't minimise this.

She clearly plans to shoehorn herself into every sitch regardless of you or whoever he's with. Your dates will finish with popping into Tesco to pick up her groceries. No boundaries and honestly she needs to find more things to fill up her day 🙈

Anyahyacinth · 26/07/2026 18:54

Yeah a friend's husband has set this up with his middle ish aged son...just a safety, tech interest thing...they enjoy it.

Neither sees it as an invasion of privacy..though I don't think the Dad texts frequently about it

Mumoffourkiddos · 26/07/2026 18:54

We have a family circle on life360 ...me my partner and our kids 18,17,16,9 my eldest was the one that wanted it. I can imagine if changing anytime soon to be honest there's always a message in the family WhatsApp saying hey sis I see your near a McDonald's I would love a milkshake or other random stuff 🤣🤣

jellyfish798 · 26/07/2026 18:55

TishHope · 25/07/2026 12:16

This. I once had a relationship with a mummy's boy. When push comes to shove, who do you think he always put first?

Amen gal, same 🙈 they are nightmares, them and their mums!

BurntBroccoli · 26/07/2026 18:56

Both my kids are in their 20s and on on Life 360 as am I. I live alone so they wanted me to be on there!

saraclara · 26/07/2026 17:31

See, there we go:

Partner 1: let's do location sharing
Partner 2: I'd rather not, thanks
Partner 1: why? Don't you trust me?
etc etc etc

that may be your experience, it wasn't mine. The trust came first by many many years. For most of our married life, mobile phones didn't exist let alone smart phones.

Kayahew · 26/07/2026 18:58

Oh my god seriously weird!!! Sorry couldn’t stop laughing as I read it otherwise i might have cried, so sorry for you x

wafflesmgee · 26/07/2026 19:01

I would find this a total turn off, what a truly weird relationship he has with his mum. Eww. Just no. I would run for the hills.
