My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

I agree you should run like the fucking wind before his mum gets to tracking you too.

Carpedimum · 26/07/2026 18:00

I’ve put that you’re being unreasonable about the ‘tracker’ because having that in and of itself is not an issue, all my family have it and it can be both useful and reassuring. However your BF’s mum is being unreasonable and is totally overstepping. I feel sorry for her that she’s got nothing better to do! He needs to if not cut the inappropriate apron strings, at least let them fray and tackle her about it.

PrincessofWills · 26/07/2026 18:00

I cannot believe this.

In this era of tech, mutually sharing locations with consent (thats the important bit so its not stalking) is not unusual. What is unusual is quizzing the other person when they are a grown adult of 30 plus. Im guessing that being in a long term relationship for him is not the norm given how invasive his mum is. It sounds like even without sharing she is a lonely and invasive mother and I would agree she sounds anxious but also its too much. Is her life so empty that she obsesses over her sons life? I had a mum a bit like that - decades ago before tech she used to follow me around and turn up places I was. Thats the type of behaviour you are seeing now. So its not really about the tech - thats just a tech feature. The issue is the lack of boundaries and how OTT it is. So I think if you frame it that way to him he may better understand. Firm no to her having your location shared and on too. In all honesty I had to get very firm with my mum and it still didnt stop her behaviour. We fell out over it many times. So he is right in that if he tackles it it will cause ruptures. So its a tricky situ

My son is 34 and we share locations 🤷🏽‍♀️
I never message him about where he is if he’s with a girl!!!

Time to cut the apron strings for his sake.
gruesome and unhealthy.

Are we not continually tracked though by simply having a phone? Or am I missing something? And I don’t mean by our families!

There's a massive difference between Google asking you for a review of somewhere you visited, and your mum or your controlling partner watching your every move. Can you not see that?

JayJayj · 26/07/2026 18:05

My location is shared with my mum and sister. I don’t think we’ve ever looked at it. It’s just for emergencies.

I am telling you now, this won’t be a good relationship. He is married to his mummy first. She will always come first, you always be expected to “just go with it” because “it’s just how she is”. If you get married, you will be “taking away her baby boy”.

I can just see your future.

springtome · 26/07/2026 18:05

It’s not weird to share locations but it’s very weird to ring questioning where you are. My mil would go this if tracking phones or even having q mobile bole was a thing when DH was young. She was bad enough tracking him based on Facebook check ins years ago 😂

Doubledenim305 · 26/07/2026 18:07

Throw him back.
This is just the beginning of a disappointing journey 🫪

catlover123456789 · 26/07/2026 18:08

Its really, really weird.

I mean probably, but how would you feel if someone at GCHQ was commenting on your every move? I think it’s creepy sometimes when it’s an automated thing, let alone a person who has chosen to do it.

nonomo · 26/07/2026 18:09

I think fair enough being able to see his location, but why is she checking it & ringing him regarding his whereabouts all the time. It’s fucking weird and he’s obviously a Mummy’s boy.

Imagine what she’d be like if you had a baby with him? MIL from Hell.

Easy for me to say, but I would leave him and tell him why. he doesn’t see how odd it
is.

Mere1 · 26/07/2026 18:10

A friend has all three daughters tracked and they her. The daughters are 48, 46 and 45. They are all happy with this. Most friends and their husbands do this. As a family, we don’t…

Well obviously but we’re tracked through our phone use much more excessively than being asked to do the odd Google review. All I meant was all the outrage over being tracked as a general concept on here is a bit ironic when we all walk around with a smart phone. Unless you don’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

localnotail · 26/07/2026 18:11

My mum (72) has location trackers for myself and my siblings. We are all late 40s/ early 50s. She just likes to know where we are! She doesn't text us non stop though. That's a bit odd but if your DH is fine with it then its none of your beeswax.

MammarOfOne · 26/07/2026 18:11

I have my 23yo on find my phone and I occasionally check to see where he is (He went to London last night and I checked at 3am to see if he’s got to his GF house safely.

But under no circumstances would I check up on him numerous times a day (sometimes check around home time to see how far away he is so I can put dinner in) and if I did start calling him like this he would 100% block me from seeing it.

having his location isn’t an issue, the issue is the constant calling, the fact that your BF doesn’t care and asked you to share is also a worry.

Charlie554 · 26/07/2026 18:11

2differenttypesofpeople · 25/07/2026 12:12

It's weird that she's always ringing him up and questioning him about his where abouts 😅

But actually just having each other on the app isn't too odd. Even at his age. I'm in my 30's and me / my friend / all our children ( one of hers is in his 20's ) are all on an app ( life360 ) and we can all see each others locations

I have my daughter’s location but I never ever look at it. It would be an absolute life or death event before I did. Shes 30. Ypu need to have a conversation. It’s ok re location sharing but the whole messaging and commenting is weird. Also as Shes in a habit of checking locations several times a day - well that wouldn’t be ok for her to know your every waking move.

Mumoftwoandcats · 26/07/2026 18:11

I get why folk have it, for the safety aspect, but checking his location is weird. My DD stopped me being able to see her location once she turned 18

Twokittenchaos · 26/07/2026 18:11

My dad still has a tracker on my phone and I’m 46. He likes to make sure I get home OK and, as my mum is in and out of hospital like a yoyo these days, I find it useful to see if he’s at home or at hospital if I don’t hear from him, indicating she’s been taken in suddenly again. However it wouldn’t cross his mind to ring and quiz me on my location, that’s a bit OTT.

Kerensa70 · 26/07/2026 18:13

I have my children’s locations and they are a similar age, they set it up and have mine. TBH they intrude on me more but it’s kind of connecting for us all. The mother here sounds a nutter though, completely out or order.

Shame she hasn’t got a tracker so we could see where she’s got to 👀

IamMaz · 26/07/2026 18:21

@ThisOneLife My son suggested it!!! 🤣

Mykneesareshot · 26/07/2026 18:25

I have tracking on my 30 year old son but I would absolutely never comment on where he is or what he's up to. I assume he is busy if not at home (his home not mine). If I kept on texting he would turn it off so it's there for emergency use for him and me. I hardly ever look to be honest, your bf mother sounds obsessed.
