My son is treated like an outsider by his own siblings and it's breaking my heart

Marielouisee · 23/07/2026 12:41

I honestly don't even know why I'm writing this. Maybe because I've kept it inside for so many years and I just need to let it out somewhere. I'm a mother of four kids. My oldest son is 20, my second son is 19, my daughter is 17 and my youngest son is 15. I love all four of them equally. There has never been a favorite. They all grew up in the same home with the same parents. My husband and I have always tried to give them love, support and everything we could. We weren't perfect parents but we genuinely tried our best. That's why this hurts so much because no matter what we've done over the years, nothing has changed.

My second son has had some health problems since he was little. He has never been seriously disabled or anything like that. He can take care of himself, he goes out on his own, he has hobbies, he has friends and he doesn't need someone looking after him all the time. He's just different from the other three. He's not as sharp, fast or energetic as they are and he has always had a weaker immune system. He would get sick more often and sometimes he needed more attention from us than the others did. As parents we couldn't just ignore that. If one of your children needs you more at certain times you naturally give them that extra care. We never loved him more than the others. We simply responded to what each child needed.

Because of his health there were times we had to cancel family vacations or trips at the last minute. We never felt right leaving one child behind while taking the other three. Looking back now I know those moments affected the others more than we realized. They missed out on some things because of it. But it wasn't like their childhood was full of disappointment. They still had birthday parties, holidays, sleepovers, school trips, sports, time with friends and special moments with us. We always tried to make sure every child had attention and opportunities. It just wasn't always possible to make everything perfect.

As they got older though, especially around sixteen or seventeen, something changed. The frustration they had toward us slowly became resentment toward their brother. Instead of blaming the situation they started blaming him. It was like in their minds he became the reason they had missed out on certain memories as kids. From that point things just kept getting worse. They stopped inviting him to things. If they planned to go somewhere together they left him out. If they were hanging out at home they acted like he wasn't there. They have a lot of the same friends because they're close in age but they rarely include him. Even their friends have started treating him like he's invisible because they follow the example my other kids set.

The hardest part for me isn't even the exclusion. It's hearing the words they say to him. More than once I've overheard them telling him they wish he had never been part of the family or that they don't want him around. Every time I hear something like that it feels like someone is ripping my heart apart. I look at my son and he never screams back or starts a fight. He just goes quiet. He smiles less than he used to. Sometimes he'll simply walk back to his room like he's already expecting it. Watching your own child slowly believe he doesn't belong in his own family is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Last week was another example that completely broke me. The other three bought tickets to a music concert together. My second son was excited because he likes the artist too. He asked if he could come with them. They had already bought tickets for themselves and never even considered buying one for him. They told him no and left without him. He didn't throw a tantrum or beg. He just said okay and went back to his room. I don't even think he expects to be included anymore. That acceptance hurts more than if he had cried.

The thing that makes this even harder is that he's genuinely such a sweet kid. He's gentle, kind and thoughtful. He has never been the child causing problems or getting into trouble. He's incredibly talented in his own way. He paints beautifully. Honestly some of his artwork amazes me. He has found a small group of friends through art classes and local galleries. He goes to exhibitions, talks to other artists and that's where I actually see him smile. Those people appreciate him for who he is. Sometimes I wonder if complete strangers understand my son better than his own siblings do.

My husband and I have spent years trying to fix this. We've had countless conversations with all of them. We've explained how hurtful their behavior is. We've asked them to imagine how they would feel if the roles were reversed. We've tried family time, one-on-one talks, setting rules and encouraging them to spend time together. We've cried in front of them.

I'm just so tired. I feel like I've failed all of my children somehow. I feel guilty toward my second son because he deserves siblings who love him and accept him. I also feel guilty toward my other three because maybe somewhere along the way they carried resentment that we didn't recognize soon enough. I keep replaying every parenting decision in my head wondering where we went wrong. Maybe we made mistakes. I'm sure we did. Every parent does. But I never imagined it would end with one of my children feeling like an outsider in the only family he's ever known.

I don't even know what I'm hoping to get from posting this. Maybe someone has been through something similar. Maybe someone has advice. Or maybe I just needed to tell someone because I've carried this pain for years and it feels unbearably lonely. I honestly pray no child ever has to wonder why their own brothers and sister don't want them around and I pray no mother ever has to stand there watching it happen while feeling completely powerless to stop it.

As well as admitting she's spent years nagging at them, lecturing them and weeping at them and is considering financial coercion to get them back under her control

But the 3 DC are doing something nasty and harmful - bullying their other sibling. In those circumstances it’s not abusive to nag, lecture, weep etc. It’s called parenting and doing what you can to try to make your kids nicer people. Should she have just kept quiet while they said horrible things to and about their brother?

If the 3 DC were doing something else nasty and harmful - let’s say, stealing money from her - would it be ok for her to nag lecture and weep? Or would she be expected to just put up with that?

Nope. They're finally, after years and years - their entire lives - of being bullied, guilt tripped and nagged incessantly by their overbearing parents - they're finally reacting.

Anyone who considers harassing, bullying, weeping, nagging and guilt tripping normal parenting is a shockingly bad parent.

There are literally books written about what happens when parents favour a sickly child and parentify the siblings.

The situation is crystal clear to anyone with the tiniest bit of insight.

As I said earlier OP can insist upon one thing only - politeness. She caused their reactive behaviour but she can certainly tell them to be polite. And that's all she can do. There will be no more bullying the other three into the support roles she chose for them.

They've escaped her clutches and no amount of bullying by the OP will force them back to heel.

She would have been better served listening to them in the first place, and addressing the root causes of the behavior.

She ignored their feelings when their resentment was directed towards her and their father, and only began caring when they began displaying it towards their brother. What did that show them? That she indeed didn’t give a shit about them, but was quick enough to take action when her favorite got his feelings hurt.

Nagging and lecturing was and is never going to do anything but cement their resentment further. She cannot harangue them into loving or liking their brother, or make them want to spend time with him.

Imagine having a sibling ‘jammed’ into your life. Wth am I reading? I am seriously wondering if OP’s teens are posting on here - it has to be them.

I agree with this. There are plenty of siblings who don’t get on for reasons unrelated to parent treatment - just very different people. You can’t make siblings get on.

But you can expect them to be pleasant to each other when living under your roof.

What on earth do you mean jammed into your life? It sounds like you mean imagine having a sibling and your parents having the absolute nerve to expect you all to live in the same house like a … family. The majority of people in the world have had a sibling ‘jammed’ into their life; it’s not a disgusting concept. I assume you’re sticking to one child?

I’m assuming that poster was referring to their parents trying to force them to involve him in everything they choose to do together, despite them making their opposition to this plain.

PatchworkCow · 27/07/2026 15:45

As well as admitting she's spent years nagging at them, lecturing them and weeping at them and is considering financial coercion to get them back under her control this stuck out "He didn't throw a tantrum or beg" why would that be considered noteworthy?

Because it's what she does, by her own admission ("We've even cried at them"). She thinks it's normal to use dramatic emotional guilt tripping behaviour to get your own way in life. So it weirded her out that her DS2 didn't do this.

Nope, it’s an over exaggeration. Forced, jammed - it’s all teen speak.

I think that is the most OP can hope for at this point, the situation being as degraded as it is. Crying, begging, and punishing is counterproductive, only seeming to fuel them to reject him (and her) harder.

I do wonder whether this is more about lashing out at OP than it is about the brother, if it’s the only way they feel they have to assert themselves, make their feelings known, and/or feel they have any impact OP at all. If she’s made them feel shit about how they’ve been treated, then this is a way, possibly the only way they’ve found, to make her feel the same in return.

If this is the case, then unfortunately they may just reject anything OP requests regarding their brother. IMO the most important things she needs to work on are her own individual relationships with them of them, because I think without that there’s no hope for the sibling relationship even just being one of mutual politeness.

SoScarletItWas · 27/07/2026 16:02

She’s just explained on her other thread (which has just been hidden / deleted 🤔) that this supposed genuinely such a sweet kid. He's gentle, kind and thoughtful son is a badly behaved devil child who believes he was switched at birth, so we may as well stop bothering commenting on this equally likely work of fiction. And if other thread is reinstated, I will come back and report my own post!

At 15 and 17? Never mind the fact that they are all her children she presumably loves and wants relationships with in future.

I think it’s all just English, and not the type used exclusively by teens. They may live together, but they don’t have to do everything together, and they don’t have to be close.

Well we wouldn’t ever put up with bullying and unkindness under any circumstances, they would be most welcome to move out unless they could abide by simple rules. It’s not good enough to say they had the odd trip cancelled due to illness so therefore they can target one sibling and make his life hell. Nope. Not here ever. If they want to get on in life without a family or support that’s a matter for them at this point. They are adults now.

My guess is there is only ring leader, and the rest will think twice when it becomes clear their parents have had enough.

OK - having read OP's new thread it tells a totally different story where the "miracle" "excluded" child appears to have a severe MH disorder and constructed a fantasy world since the age of 3. The excluded son was rude, misogynistic, cold and controlling

Totally different story from OP and it is clear why the other 3 don't want to socialize

My 18 year old son has been saying we are not his real family since he was a toddler and I don't know what to think

Marielouisee · Today 15:38
I don't know what to do so I'm writing here
My son is 18 years old and ever since he was little there have been things that I just cannot explain

As a kid he could be the sweetest boy and then suddenly become rude and start using curse words We ignored it because we thought he was just a child and would grow out of it

When he was about 3 years old he started saying that we were not his parents and not his real family By the time he was 5 he would cry and say he felt lonely because his real family was somewhere else Sometimes he even mentioned names that he believed were his parents Around the age of 7 he started talking about Los Angeles and the year 1972 He also seemed to know the names of old cars without anyone teaching him

My husband and I took him to doctors and they all said it was probably from cartoons movies or things he had heard from adults

Growing up he never really bonded with his older brother or younger sister He would sometimes say that he had a bigger family somewhere else
Around the age of 12 all of this seemed to stop He became a sweet normal kid and we thought it was finally over

Then about a year ago things slowly started changing again My daughter noticed him crying alone but whenever we asked him he denied it Sometimes I look at him and he feels like a completely different person His way of talking his expressions even the way he looks at people changes

I once heard him talking to my other son about women and it was unbelievably misogynistic Even for an 18 year old it shocked me Sometimes he says things to my daughter that no brother should say Not in a threatening way but in a very cold and controlling way especially about her boyfriend Then a little while later he goes back to acting completely normal like nothing happened

Last Friday he broke down crying and told us that we have never been his real family and never would be Then he left the house for a while

Another thing I noticed over the years is that he has always been obsessed with airplanes He would play with toy planes for hours and sometimes even cry while holding them He is also deeply interested in the 1960s and 1970s and spends a lot of time reading about that period

I am Catholic and I do not usually believe in things like past lives or anything supernatural but sometimes I honestly do not know what to think I am scared to even tell people because I do not want anyone thinking my son is mentally ill or treating him differently

I love him more than anything He is my son no matter what It just breaks my heart every time he tells me that I am not his real mother

Easy to say about children you have no emotional connection to, love, or even like.

It doesn’t particularly sound like they feel they get three out of the four of those things anyway, so the deprivation of them hardly works as a threat.

Turns out that the fourth doesn’t consider OP his mother though, so fuck it, why not go 4/4 and complete the set?

And when they tried to walk out that door to go to a concert together? Oh yeah, a whole heap of hassle about how they should take the fourth sibling with them.

They are trying to peaceably get on with their lives. Did they make a song and dance about getting concert tickets? Did they mock their brother and rub his nose in it that he's not coming? (Did they even know he likes that band, if they're not close and he moves in a different social circle to them?) No, no dramatics, they just organised it among themselves, bought the tickets and the first anyone knew of it was when they got ready to leave. At which point they had their brother asking to come along and their parents giving them grief for saying no.

The 15 and 17 yr old can't realistically leave home yet, you can't sign a rental agreement until you're 18 for private rental and there's no council housing available without special circumstances and years of waiting. The 20yr old is probably trying to hold out another year to finish their degree so they can get a good enough job to afford a private rental. By then the middle is a 18, youngest will be 16 and all can legally live where they like, all will have national insurance number so can get jobs, so I imagine the whole lot will be gone then if the coercive control by their parents doesn't stop.

Yes, I imagine at some point soon the 20 year old will walk out of the door for good. And then the 17 year old and the 15 year old will join in due course, and no introspection will be done!
