to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

I don't have a bidet but we do keep a flannel and a bucket next to our bathroom toilet. After a number 2 we have a good scrub then rinse it out for the next person. Not quite as good but we all manage to keep clean enough.

You rinse out the bucket or the flannel!?

Delatron · Today 14:16

Sorry I missed the bucket and bum flannel joke. Should have realised it was too gross to be true!

Though there are people on Mumsnet who like a ‘strip wash’ in the sink with a flannel so to be honest nothing surprises me these days!

You use the same flannel on your hoop as other people

phew it’s a joke mind you I wouldn’t be surprised if let’s not have the toilet brush in dishwasher thread again

Mischance · Today 14:17

We had a bidet in our old house. The little ones loved floating boats in it - it was just at the right height!

Tortephant · Today 14:17

you can buy them here, really quite easily.

Wait what's wrong with that? You don't have to shower every day if it's not a sweaty day.

I can't believe how many people on this site believe everything they read and can't tell humour, sarcasm or satire anymore. Even an obvious joke from a well known jokey poster is taken seriously. Sad times

Maybe they need to work on their delivery. So to speak.

Tbf there is so much batshittrry on MN it is hard to see what is and what is not a joke sometimes 😂

Bluenose1966 · Today 14:19

Was listening to two Indian guys on a podcast who said as part of their culture they wash their bums with water after a poo.
They said if you got poo on your arm you wouldn’t just wipe it off you would want to wash it off.
Never used to but I now tend to have a wash after going the toilet. If money were no object I would get a bum shower like Natsku said they do in Finland.

AlgaeDreams · Today 14:20

WisdomBiscuit · Today 13:34

Why is it unhygienic? It’s not like you prepare food with your bum.

Are not cracking your Christmas walnuts between your rock hard buttocks, or do you have a special festive method?

I think that’s a discussion for another thread. But it does divide opinion. My view is that it’s easier and quicker and better to hop in the shower than faff around splashing water around with a flannel. However I accept each to their own.

Get one of those Japanese toilets? Flushes, washes, dries.

These would be great for care homes

GisGasGus · Today 14:22

bigboykitty · Today 13:36

There is, actually. Bidets are not permitted in the UK under plumbing regulations because of 'backflow' issues.

Since when? My house had one but we had it taken out as it was never used and the space was better used for a storage unit

Luckily no policemen called in for emergency loo use during that time

Kaftanesque · Today 14:22

We've had one put in every bathroom in all the houses we've lived in apart from our first home(tiny bathroom)
I dont understand why people are so against them ?ok if you dont want one or cant fit one in but personally think they are a brilliant thing to have.
For years I had very heavy periods and to be able to quickly freshen up with a good wash with water rather than wipes or having to have a full shower is great.Same for helping with UTIs.I bathe or shower daily anyway but its so useful to use in-between when needed.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 14:23

I tend to think if you are doing the sorts of number twos that leave your bum in a such a mess that toilet paper doesn't resolve it, you might need more fibre in your diet.

luckylavender · Today 14:24

Ceramiq · Today 14:02

Just go to the loo first thing before your morning bath or shower. If you aren't doing this then your digestive system isn't working well.

And just like that everyone can get their bowels to perform to order.

Alwayswonderedwhy · Today 14:25

I quite like a bidet but haven't got room. I saw a communal pot/kettle type thing in restaurant the other day that made me boak a bit. Anything to wash your bum in/with shouldn't be in a public toilet really, that's less hygienic than just wiping and unless you have problems with your sphincter wiping is actually perfectly adequate.

AnonyLonnymouse · Today 14:25

I prefer to attack the, ahem, ‘source’ of the problem and put some lubricant (water soluble) on my bum area beforehand. It helps with wiping and avoids any soreness, especially if you have piles - although I wouldn’t know about that myself of course! Then jump in the shower and you are ready for the day with a squeaky clean bum.

Where do you slot your spatula when you’re not using it then?

Best comment of the day!

TheBrunswick · Today 14:25

We have a bidet, was in the house when we bought it.
It's not just for poops, it's handy before and after sex to freshen up.

LivGo · Today 14:25

Yes, I live in Argentina, and here everyone uses a bidet. They're seen as an essential part of the bathroom, and it is so much more hygienic. In general though, personal hygiene standards are much higher in this part of the world. I'm lucky because my apartment has a Japanese toilet instead, which is a whole other level, but I'd not be comfortable without at least a bidet. In Brasil the hose attachment is very common - it's okay but less user friendly.

Please tell me this isn't real?

OtterlyAstounding · Today 14:26

I would be concerned that the (not soapy) spray of water going over one's anal area would end up spreading faecal particles over the entire genital area. They are very close together.

If you don't have bowel issues and you have a good diet, washing shouldn't really be necessary anyway as pp have said, and there's always the option of having your shower after going, and using hot water and soap.

(Obviously, this isn't the case for people with bowel issues.)

Theworldsgonemad · Today 14:26

You need to install a Japanese toilet.
Also need to remember your glasses so you can locate the stop button!
They are brilliant though 😅

What does it matter if your arse crack isn't super hygienically clean all of the time? Literally, who gives a shit? I mean there are at least a couple of layers of clothing between your bottom and the world. I can understand with the heat and humidity of some countries it may cause a problem, but here? Not generally.
