to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

That’s not something you can give a clear answer to is it? Plain Water isn’t very good at removing anything, but if I was sprayed with mud from a tractor I’m sure I’d take a hose down over being given a dry tea towel.

thats not actually related to bum wiping though, obviously, so not sure what you’re asking.

Water is a solvent. Which means things dissolve in it. Of course it gets rid of small dirt particles that dry wiping doesn’t. Including poo.

With a bum gun do you have to be careful of squatting any poo around your fanny?

Could do it the Roman way sponge on a stick 😉

You spray from the front so the water is going front to back, no risk of poo particles touching your genitals.

There is, actually. Bidets are not permitted in the UK under plumbing regulations because of 'backflow' issues.

That's rubbish, 2 families i clean for have a bidet

Settlersa · Today 16:40

People can have one put in if they want, surely just do that

I find it really uncomfortable (and expensive) too.

I remember watching embarrassing bodies years ago and there was someone on there that always had skid marks in his underwear and was really embarrassed by it.

And the doctor said most people in the UK don’t wipe properly.
I don’t remember what he recommended but I remember him saying that a couple wipes with dry toilet roll is not good (and obviously how we sit on the toilet in the country too).

A friend of mine (a man) admitted to always having skidmarks in his underwear and thought the rest of the group (who all wash after pooing) were lying...

I was flabbergasted

Stop worrying about how other people clean their arse, it’s weird

😂😂

Wype toilet gel is good. I do agree that wiping with dry toilet paper only after a number 2 doesn’t cut it cleanliness wise, but culturally (and plumbing-wise), bidets just aren’t really common here. We always have the toilet gel on the go, really handy for the kids too.

Snap! I was in half a mind to say this. Wype is an excellent product, and only takes a 1000th amount of the space of a bidet…

Carouseloflife · Today 16:44

Use wet wipes and a nappy bucket

Laurmolonlabe · Today 16:44

By no means do all French homes have bidets, there is nothing stopping you installing one in the UK.

That episode lives rent free in my mind. He went on TV, had his arsehole on show to the world while the doctor investigated it and the conclusion was he just wasn’t wiping his bum properly!

Except it says "Currently unavailable.
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

I didn't notice that.

But there are alternatives on the Amazon site, I just don't know how good they are.

ETA You can get them on Ebay.

I tend to think if you are doing the sorts of number twos that leave your bum in a such a mess that toilet paper doesn't resolve it, you might need more fibre in your diet.

More fibre could make the problem worse. It's really not that simple.

The easiest solution for those who can't install a bidet or bum gun would be wet wipes. Not very environmental, but pretty practical and they go in the bin of course.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · Today 16:48

Not as easy or as good. When we get our bathroom refitted I will have what I want. The toilet in out hotel room in South Korea also dried you after the wash.

Of course if you are having your bathroom refitted and you can afford it, then it would be much better.

But most people (including me) can't do that.

Get one of those Japanese toilets? Flushes, washes, dries.

I remember something like this in the post natal ward.
It was a gentle blissful way to freshen up after childbirth.

I have lived in several houses with several bidets and none of us have ever got on with them. Very fiddly to use. I have two bidets in my current house and when we re-do the bathrooms we will remove them.

The hose attachments next to loos are better but you still risk getting your clothes wet. Plus with both methods the water is always too cold or you are fiddling around for ages trying to get it warm but not too warm. Then you need loads more loo roll or a towel handy to dry off. It's a faff.

I don't see what's wrong with a pack of small 'flushable' wipes for the times you need them, although we never flush them, we put them in the bin. They are cheap, biogradable so no different to loo roll really, they don't use loads of water, they don't get your legs and your clothes wet where you don't want them to be, and don't take up valuable space in your bathroom.

THis is the answer

Genuinely the best thing I bought last year, and under £15. Honestly I am a total convert, having coveted a bidet for ages, but ruled it out on the basis of space/expense.

We have the XL for the bathroom and I have a travel size for out and about. It's brilliant and inexpensive. Also found it handy when my daughter was younger and not wiping her bum properly herself.

Delatron · Today 16:55

They share the same flannel so very hygenic! Not , just shower after problem solved

No I meant bidets are more hygienic the imaginary flannel is not hygienic!

Missohnoyoubetterdont · Today 16:56

Loo roll and baby lotion. Does a better job, not just spraying fecal matter around with a jet of water. 🤮

Isn't it.

Someone on MN recommended it a few years ago and it makes such a difference.

My husband doesn't use it as his digestive system means that he doesn't need to, but it was a godsend when he had piles.

Delatron · Today 16:58

I had a theory that countries that were more saucy sexually would need the bidet more (see France) nobody wants to get up close to an unclean bottom. And the argument is that even wiping with paper is not clean enough.

My Mum, Italian, always had a bidet in our family homes in the UK. She also bought a portable bidet on a stand!

I have to say there is nothing nicer than settling your undercarriage in a warm bowl of water. Periods, post birth, heamarroids, thrush.....or just a hot sweaty vag, can all be made better by a good soak and splash in a bidet. Always wanted one, gutted DH wouldn't let me put one in our re-furbed bathroom.

Relative recently had to have an indwelling catheter, not common of course, but she was so pleased to be able to clean it regularly in a bidet, in addition to her daily shower.

FrustratedApples · Today 17:01

We use a (clean!) flannel (once!) and put used ones in a wetbag (the sort designed for cloth nappies).

LarkspurBlues · Today 17:01

Also, it isn’t just about being smug about perfect bowel movements. There’s messy big episiotomies, birth trauma etc.
