AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

How come it was 600 prior for upgrade and now 2200 ? Are they à much bigger family ?

Presumably in the same way that a walk on ticket for a train is more expensive than a pre booked one. If you want it right now you pay through the nose.

Bigreddog25 · Yesterday 18:16

Can't you just sneak their kids a few of the AI snacks?

Actually insane to expect you not to use what you paid for

Can't BIL just pay for his own kids snacks instead of essentially asking OP to steal for him?

So by using the word 'sneak', you acknowledge it would be wrong to do so?

This is why you shouldn’t ever go on holiday with anyone that you don’t live with normally - even the ones you think are normal turn out to be quite mad when your stuck with ‘em 24/7!

Still , seems a lot . I would have expected hotels would like people to upgrade seeing as they are there anyway .
But this was always going to be awkward with kids . Not the OP’s problem though !!

True, it's a huge hike. Although we don't know how many of them there are.

They can get fucked

On this occasion I’d be seeing if your kids can get some food and the treats available for their kids so they don’t miss out. Perhaps they assumed you’d be going out for meals and things so thought it wasn’t necessary. They should have discussed it but different people do different things on holiday. They will have to deal with the consequences of their actions.

That is theft and if the hotel realise they will probably lose their wristbands

You paid for AI and they didn't, yet they think it's unfair for your kids to use what they paid for ? In what world would that be unfair? You are dnbu 😲

scoobysnaxx · Yesterday 18:49

How have things been today?

Kayakerpaddleboarderwalker · Yesterday 18:58

I seriously cannot believe that someone self catering had the absolute front to tell you your children cannot use the AI, and you would have to pay for their drinks, snacks etc, because they have to pay for their kids and its unfair. OMG, I am lost for words. I don't think I have ever heard of such an unreasonable and ridiculously stupid demand. Tell them to do one and say, maybe they now realise why you went AI and not self catering. And, that your children will be enjoying all the free snacks and drinks they want. How dare they even suggest such a thing.

GreenVelvetTrousers · Yesterday 19:01

Life is about the choices we make. Your brother in law has chosen to book the cheaper holiday. He had the option to book the more expensive AI, but he made the conscious decision to book the cheaper one,
you didn’t force him. I wonder whether his plan all along was to try and share the AI bands? If so, he should bugger off, what a cheapskate.

PinkEasterbunny · Yesterday 19:06

Why don't you suggest they go to shop get a load of drinks and snacks then their dc won't miss out by the pool. Then if we're them I'd be off for a lovely dinner around the resort rather than stuck to the hotel. I'd book a boat trip, go for a walk and grab drinks and ice cream. Just get the benefit of not being AI really.

It amazes me that people still think you’re stuck in the hotel if you book AI

It remind him that you paid in advance for all the food and drink. They chose to pag as they go. Nobody is getting anything for free.

True.

I have a feeling when they booked the cheaper option they were expecting the AI guys to slip them some drinks etc.

They wouldn't miss out if their parents weren't stingy? Not on OP and her kids to resolve this at all

notacooldad · Yesterday 19:12

The "On-Site Penalty" is Massive.
If OP has booked through a travel agent the agents can secure big discounts on early bookings including things like "kids eat free"

Also the brother is asking as a 'walk in' He is already on site. He wants this more than they need him so they can ask whst they like, there's no other competition.
Brother in law has missed the "Kids Go Free" Window
When booking package holidays in advance, operators heavily subsidise children.

Finally resort restaurants and bars have strict capacity limits. If the all-inclusive buffet and bars are currently very busy during your stay, the hotel will intentionally quote an astronomical price like £2,000. This acts as a deterrent to stop guests from upgrading, preventing overcrowding and keeping service quality high for those who already paid.

Tell them as you’ve paid for it they will be using it! I can’t believe they’d expect you not to. They booked on the cheap, they can deal with the moving kids!

This.

notacooldad · Yesterday 19:15

Exactly.
Its not up to a woman to sort out this man's problem, that was his own making.
He can sort the issue out himself without getting other people involved.

PinkyFlamingo · Yesterday 19:17

Housebashing · Yesterday 08:54

I mean yes that’s the ideal scenario but Plan B would be for her children to just give them the odd slushy. It wouldn’t kill them.

How entitled is that! You want all inclusive then pay for it. 🙄

godmum56 · Yesterday 19:18

I wonder if he is OP's sister's husband, or the OP's husband's brother

FWC2026 · Yesterday 19:25

You can't leave us hanging like this!!

Gleba · Yesterday 19:27

Make it clear that you have paid for the drinks in advance, they are not “free”.

How much have you paid pp for AI? £20? Suggest they give £20 daily to each child to be spent on drinks so g they will not miss out. It can be a lesson in budget management for their children too.

Lvpxl · Yesterday 19:48

Well if he doesn’t like AI that’s fine but did he forget that kids are like termites and want to eat and drink constantly?
As someone who loves to go out to eat on holiday - which I also factor into spending money. I still book AI because it’s less hassle to get the kids fed on demand. He was being cheap and now all his family are paying for it.
