AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

AIvSC · 12/07/2026 21:45

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

Also… in addition to my previous comment, I’m sure someone will have already said this but this is an excellent life lesson for him to teach his kids about the value of money, to be gracious, have gratitude, work hard, how some people have more in life generally and about the pre planning and decision making which has led to this situation and that we can’t spend our lives being jealous because there will always be disparity between people, our peers, people we see online etc

Edited

This. If a classmate gets bought a fancy car, is he going to insist that they don’t drive it until his DCs get bought a car? Or if you help your DCs onto the property ladder, is he going to insist that your DCs live with you, leaving their new house empty, until his DCs get onto the property ladder?

There will always be someone in life whose parents buy them something that your parents didn’t buy you. Always.

KookyPeachScroller · Yesterday 15:49

You paid for it and got a good deal on it, their lack of hindsight should not have to be your problem. I can understand their kids wanting what yours have but that’s up to their adults to explain the difference between s/c and a/i. Either that or BIL can reimburse you the £600 to pay for your kids food/drinks/snacks. So NO - you paid for it so let your kids use it.

JontyGentooey · Yesterday 15:52

We always get AI when it's on offer because it generally works out loads cheaper, even if you don't drink and still go out for the odd lunch, dinner or day trip. Mostly due to the pound being on its arse. Once you've bought snacks and drinks as well as the meals you've suddenly haemorrhaged an absolute fortune.

Your BIL's just realised how much more he's going to spend because he didn't book AI in advance and he's pissed off about it. But that is really not your problem!

This is so insane I'm struggling to believe it's real.

@BurnTheWholeThingDown

“fucknuggets” is now my word of the week. And you, are poster of the month.

Strawberries86 · Yesterday 16:12

@AIvSC please tell us what your bil said? It’s an investment worthy thread.

Throwawayaccount1 · Yesterday 16:21

Thanks to this thread I shall now be using the words bat-shit and fuck-nugget on the regular.

Honestly who doesn't AI when there's kids, ice cream and slushies involved?

Harrietsaunt · Yesterday 16:22

They are batshit. Ignore.

Housebashing · Yesterday 16:22

keepincool · Yesterday 14:20

Haven't you realised that housebatshit is well 'ard?. S/he is letting people know how things would play out if people didn't break the rules for them.

I’m laughing at people having an overreaction to frozen ice
The other poster then made the point that those people who “steal” the frozen ice might be a bit rough and I pointed out If that was the case that they were a bit rough they might get a bit rough with them.
I’ve never had a fight in my life. You’ll be pleased to hear and I’d probably wouldn’t win if I did.
But I’d still be more than happy to share my all-inclusive benefits with the family
Because what I lack in hardness I make up for in not being a pr1ck

And when OP is spotted by staff and asked to leave the resort, then what? Because it's against the T&Cs, and it's stealing.

ByUniqueViper · Yesterday 16:24

The all inclusive lot get exactly that. The self catering will have to pay for whatever they want.
They had the same opportunity as the AI's. Its really not your problem

ColaAndRum · Yesterday 16:36

This is why I find holidays with family hard work.
Some family members have very different parenting styles to us and it gets very wearing very quickly.
We’ve had requests for our older kids to pretend to go to bed/get out the pool or whatever because they can’t say no to their kids, have had my kids being asked to not to win races and games because their kid doesn’t like it, also have had to put up with being called mean and uptight because we don’t let the kids have endless coke and icecream.

Whatthefork1 · Yesterday 17:04

so your kids can’t use the AI that you have paid for because they didn’t pay for it and now believe it is unfair on their kids. Well that is just tough shit isn’t it. I can’t believe he would even make such a comment. Your definitely not being unreasonable.

This is the most batshit insane thing I’ve read all day, and the competition has been stiff.

Tell them to fuck off and stop being such complete fucknuggets. Don’t give them any hint that this is at all an acceptable request. It’s not.

Hahaha was coming on to say this. Mumsnet has been a strange place today.
OP you are not in the least unreasonable

This is Mumsnet hun. We can say prick. No NeEd To HiDe ThInGs HeRe.

Unless you were calling @keepincool a prick, in which case you would want to hide it as MNHQ might look to ban you.

Id ‘miss’ you. 😚😚😚

(Am I doing ‘ ‘ right?)

On this occasion I’d be seeing if your kids can get some food and the treats available for their kids so they don’t miss out. Perhaps they assumed you’d be going out for meals and things so thought it wasn’t necessary. They should have discussed it but different people do different things on holiday. They will have to deal with the consequences of their actions.

So you think OPs kids should steal extra from the buffet so her tight arsed BIL doesn't have to pay for snacks for his kids?

That's a bit unreasonable, and likely to get them into trouble.

Their parents should cough up and pay, just like the OP had to. Its not free!

BIL should have been more specific when sending the booking link.

FreyaW · Yesterday 17:25

Wise up...you've paid, they haven't.
What's not fair is you even thinking about, never mind considering, depriving your own kids of their already paid for treats..it's their holiday too!...all because some skin flints want them to suffer and make them and you feel bad!
Don't do that to your kids

PissedOff2020 · Yesterday 17:30

.

PissedOff2020 · Yesterday 17:30

Tell them you’ve paid for it, so it isn’t fair they’re expecting you not to use it. Tell them it ridiculous they even asked.

So, as though you’re all inclusive and they’re not, can’t one of you with your all-inclusive wristbands just go up and get them some free stuff? You can have as much as you want, it’s not limited -is it not possible to get their kids a free ice cream etc.
We have sometimes made friends with people who’ve gone all-inclusive when we’re self-catering - when they’ve gone to the bar they’ve just offered to get us a drink too. It’s no skin off their nose.

After I had bern given a ridiculous demand by BIL and they were too tight to go AI, I honestly think its on them to sirt their own kids out rather than op bailing them.

chaosmaker · Yesterday 17:42

I would tell him to turn it round and think what he'd say if his family was AI and yours wasn't...... Just ridiculous. That's why you paid a lot more.

WiddlinDiddlin · Yesterday 17:48

Oh I'd tell him 'you'll have to explain to your kids that they can't have all the AI stuff as their Dad is a miserable tight-arse'. And then carry on as you were, enjoying the benefits of AI that you've paid for!

No, hotels that do a mix of SC and AI are VERY hot on watching for people doing this and you can be kicked out - it is stealing.

Two2TooAlsoToToward · Yesterday 17:59

I cannot imagine having the audacity to tell someone who has prepaid for £600 of food and drink to NOT order because my DCs feel left out. How is he your BIL—is he your DH’s brother? What has DH said?

TooHotToBoogie · Yesterday 18:01

BlueMum16 · 12/07/2026 21:48

I'm not sure what they are asking of you.

You use the facilities available to you so food and drinks.

They either pay or don't eat/drink there.

they could ask the hotel to upgrade them - it will cost though!
