My mum has thrown away over £150 worth of makeup and medication

I have a small pouch that I carry around with me everyday. It’s got a lot of medication in it (antihistamines, painkillers, stomach medicine), as well as 5 lip sticks and 4 lip liners. In total it comes to over £150 worth of stuff in a space NK small pounce (which is expensive in itself!).

I was at my mum’s on Thursday night when she complained about her having bad hay fever. I pulled out the pouch and handed it to her, and although I thought I’d put it back in my bag I must’ve left it on the side. I realised tonight it’s missing as I’ve gone through my bag ahead of work tomorrow and she’s admitted that she has thrown it away.

AIBU to say she should replace it? Both the makeup and medication she’s thrown away?

I would hunt him down and cover him from head to toe in rotten fish juice. Your poor Dad.

Daddy blondes is the best dad

he wouldn’t take no for an answer and kept getting up from the chair that I sat him in

ex didn’t give a toss and since splitting I’ve realised how selfish he is

and why I’m now divorced from him

Wait, you mean he WASN'T an ex at the time of the incident?! I was sat here assuming he did it as some sort of parting revenge act. Absolutely a divorceable offence!

My parents have done things like this too. I would just say it was worth €1000 and ask her for a boots voucher.

Is that strictly true, though? I often wonder - for all kinds of products - isn't it amazingly coincidental how so many of them are fine for 1 year exactly but not more?! Why do you see so few products that are fine for 10, 14 or 19 months?

Especially considering they sell mineral water that's 'filtered through pure mountain rocks for millions of years' and honey that never goes off, and it still has a 'best before' or even 'use by' date!

It’s not about the product itself, it’s about the growth of bacteria that’s introduced by contact with your mouth/eyes. In an ideal world no, it would be considerably shorter than 12 months before you replace things, but 12 months is the point where most products are probably incubating something less than savoury.

I use mine for about 10 years’ and have lived to tell the tale

That’s nice for you. Lots of people drive without a seatbelt and don’t die in car accidents. It doesn’t make it sensible. 🙄

Yet people on this thread are encouraging OP to fish her lip products out of a bin containing more bacteria than you can shake a stick at

No he turned it off Xmas time apparently Dec 23 - I kicked him out Feb 24 for other reasons and thinking about it - it was a year later I went into the shed and omfg so June 25 so over a year of rotting fish but didn’t smell till opened the freezer so had no idea had been turned off till I mentioned the smell to him and could he come and help

not my problem was his reply and I don’t have the money - as asked him to pay for collection as couldn’t take to tip

so to add to it , I think I had to pay £30 for council to come and collect freezer once been emptied and sprayed with disinfectant etc

hence he’s a selfish prick - my dad would have forgiven him many things - but not the freezer lol

Mumsnet is a strange place indeed. Just yesterday I was on a thread where a 19year old daughter had sold her mum’s dress (the mum had lent her daughter) on vinted but had immediately ordered a replacement and paid for express shipping so it arrived in time for a holiday. Posters were falling over themselves to say how awful the daughter was and how a replacement wasn’t a real apology, calling the daughter entitled, selfish, a madam and trying to prove there was malicious intent in the selling of the dress and that it couldn’t have been a misunderstanding.

Today, we have a younger woman whose mum has thrown away valuable possessions carelessly and lots of posters are putting the blame on OP for leaving it or saying she’s precious or blaming her for owning the stuff. People making up excuses for the mum and thinking OP should go and dig through waste. Also medication stored above a certain temperature compromises its safety. Baking medication amongst rotting food that’s generating heat whilst decomposing and is probably now maggot infested is not something I would like to do.

OP, if I had accidentally binned my daughter’s stuff, my immediate response would be remorse and an offer to replace. But I have a mother who would blame me for owning stuff and saying that I shouldn’t have stuff that I can’t afford to replace. I don’t think YABU - you lose or bin somebody’s stuff, you replace it.

Tekknonan · Yesterday 17:39

I can see how that happened. I put stuff on the kitchen worktop to go in the bin, scoop the lot up and out it goes. It wouldn't occur to me to look for something someone had left. You do have some responsibility here - you left it.

Blondeshavemorefun · Yesterday 17:46

Plus also op - you left it there 3 days. You didn’t get home and think the next day oh where is it - it was a few days till you missed it

So fucking what? Have you ever had a busy week at work?

Have you never heard of confirmation bias before or something? Just because you’ve been fine doing something doesn’t make it safe or sensible to do.

Using an old lipstick is hardly comparable to not using a seatbelt!

Have a look at Space NK make up bags.

They are the size of a decent pencil case with firm-ish sides.
How any one could scoop it up is beyond me.

They have all different sizes. I carry one of the small ones (I think it’s called the mini?) as a tiny little bag that just goes in each handbag

Which would be why I didn’t compare the two. My point to the other poster was that just because they have been fine doing something ill-advised doesn’t make it a good idea.

Are you sure she hasn’t taken the bag and contents for herself?

Seatbelt analogy was a bit OTT though

I have bought other lipsticks in between

Lollipop81 · Yesterday 18:13

It was an accident most likely. I wouldn’t be forcing my mom to pay.

FTMaz · Yesterday 18:27

She’s clearly done it by accident and I would never ever ever ask my mum to replace anything that expensive. The fact you’re even asking is bizarre

pinkstripeycat · Yesterday 18:29

nostyleandnoclothes · 12/07/2026 21:19

I just don’t really want to dig through heat baked rubbish when she’s the one who threw it out, and she definitely won’t do that!

You’re not that bothered then.

I went rifling through my kitchen bin with rubber gloves on to look for a £5. I found it at the bottom. It was disgusting and wet but could be used (was paper one).

I couldn’t (and still can’t) afford to lose £5 and certainly can’t afford to spend that much money on makeup! There’s no way I wouldn’t try and retrieve it!

Exactly my thoughts. I assumed the mother must have had an eyesight issue when I first read it but apparently not. Sweeping the whole worktop contents into a bag..the sodding cat would be in there and phones and all sorts!

Unless it’s the size of a tic tac tin I just can’t imagine someone sweeping it into a bin bag without realising. And how much rubbish is on a worktop for someone to need to sweep it directly into a bag! Don’t most people have a bin and just put things in it as they go?!
