My mum has thrown away over £150 worth of makeup and medication

I have a small pouch that I carry around with me everyday. It’s got a lot of medication in it (antihistamines, painkillers, stomach medicine), as well as 5 lip sticks and 4 lip liners. In total it comes to over £150 worth of stuff in a space NK small pounce (which is expensive in itself!).

I was at my mum’s on Thursday night when she complained about her having bad hay fever. I pulled out the pouch and handed it to her, and although I thought I’d put it back in my bag I must’ve left it on the side. I realised tonight it’s missing as I’ve gone through my bag ahead of work tomorrow and she’s admitted that she has thrown it away.

AIBU to say she should replace it? Both the makeup and medication she’s thrown away?

It’s really not. Rotting food that some of which will have liquified having sat for days in this heat, can easily penetrate a fabric pouch or its seams, and leak into / underneath the lipstick and lip liner lids. They aren’t sealed with airtight packaging or anything. Absolutely no way I’d be using those products. The medicines, maybe, because they are sealed in blister packs but those are cheap to replace anyway.

Food doesn’t go in with landfill any more. I thought that was law nationwide.

FFS. I wish people would RTFT or at least OPs posts.

If your mum had checked the bin as soon as you realised it would have been right on the top surely, how much rubbish are they putting in there. Although if this is the way they 'tidy' (i.e by just throwing everything in the bin) then maybe it would have been a lot!

I can't speak specifically for OP's DM, but in my experience, there's a very strong correlation between the people who indiscriminately bin everything that they don't see a need for in that moment and those who always put out their general waste wheelie bins with the lids wide open.

Often they will have recycling bins that they also use as general waste overflow - either because they don't understand how to separate rubbish or (much more often) they see themselves as far too special and important for all that. They may scoff at why should they sort their rubbish and not the 'lowly' bin men - because "that's what I pay my council tax for" etc.

The law is that every council must separately collect food waste OR be putting plans in place to do so at some point in the future.

Many, many councils still fall under the second (somewhat vague) category.

hourspassed · Yesterday 09:44

It sounds to me that she did it out of spite. Would she do this do you think? It just seems like a very strange thing to do - just throw a bag away packed with stuff? If she has no cognitive issues then she would have known it was yours.

I would be fuming but I would have definitely gone round to rummage through her bin to retrieve it and would have left all the rubbish out for her to put back again.

chocoluv · Yesterday 09:50

I’d be really annoyed but unless it has been taken away then it’s still there.

She should fish it out but if she won’t I’d be going over there and getting it out myself.
It might be a bit gross but it’s only food waste.

Most of it should be salvageable.

It certainly does in my county, separate food collections have never even been mentioned and neither does it happen where my parents live

Are you talking about England?

No cognitive problems. She absolutely can afford to replace it. Her excuse is she just wasn’t looking as she swept a load of stuff into the bin!

Sorry for this, but what a stupid, negligent, careless, disrespectful old duffer. Could she not see it was prescribed medication, and your own personal lippy stuff? That's a blatant, basic lack of respect for you and your property.

Food waste that has sat in the heat for 3 days, rotting and liquifying or breeding maggots… I really think everyone on this thread saying they’d have no issues fishing it out and using those products on their lips is talking BS

They’re genuinely so carefree with their belongings it’s a bit worrying. Things like my dad has previously left an Apple Watch at security in the airport, and while browsing duty free realised he’s done it. Instead of going back for it, he grabbed a new one because it’s “easier”!!!

So she can replace it then, that would be the "easiest" option all around.

nostyleandnoclothes · Yesterday 10:04

I’ve found it. After the most disgusting experience of my life 🤢 it’s covered in liquid, which has soaked through the zip and collected in the pouch. It’s all ruined.

You’re welcome ☺️

Other people have actually used the thanks reaction on my post so clearly I’m not the only one annoyed despite your pass agg sarcasm 🙄

And how do suggest OP facilitates that?

Strong arm her mother into going through the bin?

Small debt action for the cost of replacements?

Some of these replies are as ridiculous as the OP and her mother.

Okay, the DM cant be made to do it but any future cordial relationship would depend on the DM resolving the problem.

She thinks it’s a big joke. Meanwhile I’ve spent the best part of two hours digging through a bin on my day off, only for it to all be soaked in bin juice. Absolutely vile.

Definite cognitive issues.

Sweeping stuff into a bin bag to clear a surface is one thing if you want to tidy up quickly but you leave the bin in a cupboard to come back to later to sort.

Putting the lot in the bin is definitely not normal

Not recognising a bag belongs to your dd after you have used it. Cognitive issues

Leaving handbag at someone’s house. Cognitive issues.

Exh started doing this sort of thing about 10 years ago in his late 50s

Although not diagnosed as going to the doctors would involve leaving the house and he doesn’t ever leave the house.
He hasn’t worked for years
He forgets everything within a few seconds so a conversation is impossible.

She thinks it is funny!

I would be having little to do with her in future. It sounds like she is as careless with your feelings as your posessions.

IsItSnowing · Yesterday 10:11

So your parents are so blase with money they buy a new phone if they mislay it but your mum throws your stuff away and doesn't think she needs to replace it! That's really bizarre behaviour.
Of course she needs to replace it. You don't throw other people's stuff away and if you do it, even accidently, then you replace it.

Forgetting your handbag can be normal, and she’s always been this careless.

I’m sorry but why should I have to dig through their grey rubbish, which includes food waste as their local council doesn’t operate a food waste recycling scheme, that’s baked in 35 degree temperatures for the last three days, because SHE was careless? It’s vile and even if the bag is in there it’s not sanitary to use any of it!

Glad you found it.

get online and reorder everything

she can pay for it.

she’s very odd.

I’m afraid I would lose it with her at that point! You’ve had to do that because you can’t afford to replace the things and she’s refusing to whilst laughing about it? She needs a reality check 😡

Okay. She's being a bitch actually. I'd return the favour, and suggest that perhaps she needs to see a doctor..
