My new NDN has three dogs. Help?!

As per the title, we moved in a few months ago. We’re a couple with one small dog, and next door is also a couple with 3 large dogs.

They have no control over the dogs at all. One in particular, can scale the fence and jump into our garden, 🤷🏻‍♀️ which he does on a regular basis. One of them is trying to dig a hole under the shared fence. They all bark constantly.

I’ve approached them and asked if they could do something about it, and the response was that the dogs are young and will settle down.

About 20 mins ago, one of their dogs got into our garden, came into the house as the back door was open, and ran amok barking, jumping and dragging dirt all over our new carpets. I was genuinely scared as was my small dog. 😞

I’m now sitting with the doors and windows closed, when I would like to be sitting in my garden.

What the hell can I do? I’m so pissed off.

Trellis on the top of the fence.

What fuckers your neighbours are though.

Tableforjoan · Yesterday 18:26

Dog warden for the ones in your house.

They are dogs out of control.

JulietteHasAGun · Yesterday 18:26

It’s an offence for a dog to be dangerously out of control including in a private place. The dog doesn’t have to have harmed anyone just scared someone. Depends how much you want to go nuclear but you could start reporting them every time. Or tell the neighbours that you’re going g to start reporting them to the police every time, see if that makes them take it more seriously.

Thank you, I did think about a trellis of some sort, but it’s a new build and we apparently can’t increase the height of the fence at all.

Dog warden is a good idea, I’m just so disappointed that this is happening. I wanted to get on with my new neighbours and now I dread stepping outside.

Absolutely report to the council. Their dogs are dangerously out of control.

Gila15 · Yesterday 18:32

Will the council do anything? They haven’t actually bitten or injured me/ my dog. I don’t want them to be put down or anything. I just want their owners to watch them. And train them!

It is their responsibility to contain their animals.
Report them.

Tableforjoan · Yesterday 18:33

It’s a legal offence for dogs to be considered out of control. And breaking into your garden is that

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · Yesterday 18:34

Dog warden.

What breed, out of interest?

Gila15 · Yesterday 18:34

Their dog is now back in my garden. 🫩

You need to take photos for the dog warden as evidence.

Also, I hope they came and cleaned the carpet, if not, I would be getting it done professionally and sending them the bill!

I wouldn't say it's increasing the height of the fence (technically) to add trellis. It's a temporary gardening tool.

Probably not unless you absolutely persist. A dog in my family was actually attached (£3,000 vet bill) by an out of control dog. Took much persistence even for an acknowledgement from the dog warden.

TheGreatDownandOut · Yesterday 18:41

Wow how inconsiderate of your neighbours! That’s actually awful! You definitely need to report. Them simply saying “they’re young they will grow out of it” is not good enough! What do they say when the dogs are in your garden or when they’ve been in your house?!

Just do it.

I'm not even sure if trellis officially counts as increasing the height - I think that's more about massively tall panels or very high brick walls.

TheGreatDownandOut · Yesterday 18:42

Even if the council just write to them, an ‘official’ letter may do the trick?

I don't think trellis counts towards the height of the fence. Whatever, I'd do that anyway. I have dogs and I'd be mortified if mine did this and furious if the neighbours' dogs did it. I'd start by telling them you will have no option but to report them to the dog warden if they don't get them under control. The fact they are young should make training easier. And if they don't train them when they are young then they will just get worse.

Trellis isn't increasing the height of the fence.

Tableforjoan · Yesterday 18:46

The nuclear option is to catch the dog and take it to a vet’s and drop it off as a stray tbh

Gardenisablooming · Yesterday 18:47

Put it out in the front street.
When get have to chase round the neighbourhood for it they may take better care.
