To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

I think it's the opposite. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the game or staying up for it, but all the hysterical over dramatic nonsense about it being 'historic' and the kids will remember it all their lives, etc. It's a tournament that happens every four years, it was only the final 16, which England have reached a few times.

Some of the carry on on the thread about whether or not her son should stay up (and I did think he should) was ridiculous. We don't get this silly about any other sport.

It's great that we are doing well and people like watching it, but there might be less vitriol if people didn't seem to have lost all perspective over a fairly regularly occuring sporting event at a relatively early stage in the contest. I could have understood it if it was the semis or the final, but at this stage it really isn't this massive historic never to be repeated moment.

Well, exactly. There's quite a nasty aggressive undercurrent (which is not absent from this thread) which leads to, for example, the group of young men in our town surrounding people minding their own business and demanding that they agree that "it's coming home". At its worst, it leads to the known increase in domestic violence if or when England loses.

"Yet teachers always have it so hard...."
I didn't say that teachers "have it so hard." You made an allegation and I countered it with an actual account of the realities of the situation in my school.
I could say the same about you and your "on call 24/7 for a whole week" but I won't.

Then half your colleagues haven’t booked AL, have they? It has to be confirmed 6 weeks in advance!

Don't be ridiculous - what % of staff, in most healthcare settings, do you imagine can have AL at the same time?

They don't help with the aftermath of bottles put in hedges, cans thrown down vomit etc.

But this still would have happened if the match had been on earlier. People would still have gone to the pub to watch the game at 8pm, got pissed and left that pub and done the same thing. Your issue there is with the Local Council not making sure pubs are being responsible neighbours. (Also, don’t buy a house near a pub)

It’s the World Cup FFS!
Football may be the MOST important activity in young people’s lives.

😂

And yet schools were closed half of the week before last and the same this week, and even those that were open did very little. It's funny when it's the school who closes or just sticks things on for the afternoon, it's fine and won't be to the detriment of their education. DS didn't stay up he's too young, but the hypocrisy is real.

Didn’t the schools close because of the heatwave ?

Sassylovesbooks · Today 09:04

I didn't stay up, my husband didn't stay up, my son didn't stay up...it didn't suit our family arrangements. We aren't anti-football at all. If people want to stay up, that's their business. I couldn't care a less if people stayed up or not!!

Isobel201 · Today 09:05

I'm not bothered about football, but then someone else won't be interested in the hobby I do - I just accept it and let them get on with it as long as its not affecting me.

My son's school closed when it was 25 and breezy

Screamingabdabz · Today 09:07

Jeez what a horrible thread. Sums up football for me - starts with an innocent game that is supposed to be good natured and brings people together, but all it does is raise aggression and tribalism against people who aren’t like you.

Insulting hard working teachers and people with genuine concerns about the social consequences of this match, you’re not exactly a glowing advocate for sportsmanship and egalitarianism are you op?

I’d suggest you’re the one that needs to calm down. Learn to prioritise empathy and humanity over a silly game where men kick a ball with their feet.

I like my job, don't say I have it rough, I knew it wasn't easy when I joined, didn't have to take a promotion which meant I'd be on call, I chose to. I don't start threads about how hard my profession have it, I don't turn every major world event into how it's going to impact my work, can't say the same for all professions here. I'm at work now so can't continue the scintillating discussion. I'm sure you've got sleepy kids to deal with anyway.

NeatPinkFinch · Today 09:09

Because I find it very hard to believe a woman was in active labour and the midwives shrugged their shoulders and turned back to the football.

Wow that’s really nasty OP. I don’t think that poster needs further trauma from not being believed. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Spoken by someone who knows nothing about schools!

Absolutely. My GC's school is showing the match at 9am. I've had to struggle to get my year 6 GD in. They closed once the weather had cooled down, after forcing the children in, in full uniform. She might have been more keen if they had have been showing a film or actually doing something school related. Everything has been winding down for the rest of the school. Their school isn't unique.

Morepositivemum · Today 09:11

Perfect28
As a teacher no they won't drop dead but they will be really tired and more likely to have behaviours which disrupt the learning of others. If you kept them up, keep them off school for the sake of the rest of us. Thanks.

Do you not just take it as one of those things in life? Even school has had eg school tours or big sporting events on a day that wasn’t a Friday and the kids have been grotty and irritable the following day of school, they’d asked to not go in and I said no you suck it up you’ll be fine, it’s part of life that something special might happen and the next day you go to work school, and you suffer, but it’s cool you got to experience the thing and you’ll remember both that and laugh about the following day!!

Here you're minimising what it means to people. To you it may be a silly game but it is the most popular sport in the world, and the World Cup is the most prestigious competition.

Can't you just ignore it? Get on with the stuff you find joy in? Rather than just childishly attacking something that brings joy to millions

It’s the end of term. They’re not doing anything, I know that from my niece who has spent the last week doing absolutely naff all.

I don’t have kids, but this is what I mean. It’s not irresponsible to let your kids watch the football, they won’t die from one day of less sleep and the school won’t burn down!

Your niece is either very lucky or goes to an underachieving school. It’s not the last week of term. There are 3 weeks left. Learning has been severely impacted because of the weather. I hope your attitude is down to tiredness.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · Today 09:13

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 06:38

Oh no! One day of a little less watching films at the end of term! However will they cope! Genuinely I don’t know whats gone wrong in this country lately

Where do you teach? Or where do your kids go to school? My kids school watch films on the last day of term, not two weeks before the end of term m.
Why don't you go in to school and look after 30 exhausted 5 year olds and come back later to tell us how you got on.
Yes, I hate football but don't give a toss if others want to watch it. Don't pretend though that a load of over tired kids is going to make an easy day for teaching staff.. Personally I think parents of primary school aged children were crazy to let their children watch it. Still my kids are like me, they hate football too so were happy enough going to bed.

ThreadGuardDog · Today 09:13

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 07:48

lol, god forbid an adult isn’t uptight!

Absolutely. Don’t forget that full school uniform is mandatory until the official end of term.

SkirlingGirl · Today 09:15

This thread is full of MN football tropes.

Grown men kicking a bag of air

Rugby is preferable

Tennis is so much naicer

I've got a good job so of course I hate football

Etc ad infinitum

The snobbery always surfaces, it's not just that posters hate football, the undercurrent is always that it's just, well, common.

It is our 'national sport' in terms of participation and spectator numbers, way beyond any other sport. The World Cup is the most watched sporting event on earth by far.

BillyBites · Today 09:17

And the thread was started by someone intent on bashing an imagined group of people who apparently need to "calm down a little."

No, we are perfectly calm.

I hope your attitude is down to tiredness.

More likely that OP has been sent to school cranky because they weren’t allowed to stay up to watch the game. I’m sure ten minutes in the fresh air in the playground at morning break will do them the world of good.

Sereine · Today 09:17

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 08:01

It’s true though. It’s the end of term. The learning is done. The kids will not suffer for one day where a few of them are tired.

You've been told by several people who actually work in schools that that is not the case, yet you still insist that your version of the facts is true. And you still haven't apologised for dismissing the poster's awful birth experience, which less than two weeks after the Amos report on maternity services was unbelievably stupid.

You're not doing yourself or your argument any favours, OP.

Neither is football.

Whinging seems to be, though...

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · Today 09:21

So @nowillpowernoproblem either you've name changed for this thread or you've never posted here before. Clearly you came here just to rage bait people having just watched the match.

Football may not unite us like you claim, but your thread certainly has. Even those who agreed with your original sentiment now think you're a dick like the anti-football crowd do. Well done.

This world cup has sparked my interest in football..I used to just like cricket
