To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

I’m not anti football (in fact I like watching football). But I do resent the amount of time, attention and conversation which you are expected to expend upon it.

Its hard for a football lover to understand how all encompassing it can be during a tournament if you either don’t like it or just don’t care all that much. It can become very draining and quite alienating when its all other people want to talk about and you just want to get away and talk about something else for a bit.

Also I find the tribalism around club football ugly and childish. Grown men fighting/arguing over it is contemptible.

I think some of us just wish sometimes there was a way to get away from it for a bit.

All of this (apart from the first sentence as I don’t like football).

I've noticed @nowillpowernoproblem hasn't been back, they're probably at school now. 😁

capricorn12 · Today 09:23

My concern is the amount of people on the roads today having had hardly any sleep.

ThreadGuardDog · Today 09:24

SkirlingGirl · Today 09:15

This thread is full of MN football tropes.

Grown men kicking a bag of air

Rugby is preferable

Tennis is so much naicer

I've got a good job so of course I hate football

Etc ad infinitum

The snobbery always surfaces, it's not just that posters hate football, the undercurrent is always that it's just, well, common.

It is our 'national sport' in terms of participation and spectator numbers, way beyond any other sport. The World Cup is the most watched sporting event on earth by far.

Edited

That still doesn’t mean that everyone likes it, or that they are ‘snobs’ for not doing so. Football is associated with violence on the terraces and bad behaviour on match days (l live close to a stadium and experience it first hand) it’s also the source of much domestic violence when the result goes the wrong way.

So in many ways it’s the opposite of what ‘sport’ should be, so l’m thankful we don’t have a national sport because football is far from the ideal model for that.

And yet schools were closed half of the week before last and the same this week, and even those that were open did very little. It's funny when it's the school who closes or just sticks things on for the afternoon, it's fine and won't be to the detriment of their education. DS didn't stay up he's too young, but the hypocrisy is real.

That's because in some schools education was not physically possible in the heat, especially those in badly designed buildings with lots of plate glass. No-one suggested that having to stop teaching was detrimental to education. If anything, it made it all the more important not to waste time today.

I think it's the opposite. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the game or staying up for it, but all the hysterical over dramatic nonsense about it being 'historic' and the kids will remember it all their lives, etc. It's a tournament that happens every four years, it was only the final 16, which England have reached a few times.

Some of the carry on on the thread about whether or not her son should stay up (and I did think he should) was ridiculous. We don't get this silly about any other sport.

It's great that we are doing well and people like watching it, but there might be less vitriol if people didn't seem to have lost all perspective over a fairly regularly occuring sporting event at a relatively early stage in the contest. I could have understood it if it was the semis or the final, but at this stage it really isn't this massive historic never to be repeated moment.

This.

My workplace managed it very fairly, I thought. There was a Teams poll at the start of the tournament with options ranging from "I will watch every match no matter what and will call in sick to avoid missing a match" to "There's a football match on? Who's playing?" and including answers like "I'm only interested if they reach X stage" and the rota was organised accordingly, so if it wasn't for my neighbours and the fact the entire country seems to have lost collectively lost it's sanity I probably wouldn't care one way or the other.

I'm now off to ask for another Teams poll, which includes the answer, "I don't care about football, but my neighbours are massive inconsiderate twats"

And yes, screaming intermittently between 2 am and 4:30 am on a Monday is being a massive twat. IDGAF if it's because a bunch of blokes are doing well at kicking a sack of leather about. Unless there is a fire, I need to be aware of then screaming and chanting at that time in the morning is massively twattish.

If you enjoy football, great, happy for you. Don't inflict it on me.

Sadcafe · Today 09:28

I have no particular like or dislike of the football, what annoys me personally is the hype. At the end of the day, this was a last 16 match, not the final, if people want to stay up, it’s their choice, but put it into perspective, if it was the final and it was on at 1am I’d fully understand all the near hysteria that comes from fans and pundits, I’d possibly even join in, but it wasn’t. Good for the team on the result , but let’s try to remember we’ve won nothing yet

@Thepeopleversuswork

its not a matter of life and death you say?!?

pffft

its much more important than that! 😂 ⚽️

Wow that’s really nasty OP. I don’t think that poster needs further trauma from not being believed. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The poster didn’t actually say that was what happened either. OP is unwilling to accept that nobody needed to actually be sitting around watching the football. The game just being on would potentially be enough of a distraction to have an effect on care.

Thepeopleversuswork · Today 09:31

KatiePricesKnickers · Today 08:43

It’s the World Cup FFS!
Football may be the MOST important activity in young people’s lives.

Again that's your perspective, it's not a universal truth. It's not mine or my daughter's and you don't get to tell me I'm odd or unusual because the World Cup isn't more important than my holiday.

katepilar · Today 09:31

I dont know what exactly you have in mind that needs to calm down.

The whole professional fotball or hockey concept is extremely weird.

FIFAS · Today 09:32

I like watching the sport. I detest the violence.

theleafandnotthetree · Today 09:33

I'm Irish so have no dog in this fight but we lost our minds when we experienced some success in tournaments back in the 90s. And it was bloody brilliant and a key memory for the vast majority of people around at the time. No one remembers that X widgets went out one day late or how tired they felt the next day or whether the service at X business was a bit below par. I mean what is all this striving FOR if we can't have moments snd periods of collective excitement and celebration. They are rare enough and precious and unlike many things nowadays, accessible to all.

Actually I did say they were sat watching the football - they were!

But I really didn't mean to derail the thread so much - it was supposed to be one example of it being a bit crap to say 'why can't things just pause for the football, it's such a big thing and not that often'. I wasn't expecting OP to respond like that and so turn it into such a 'thing'. I am really grateful for people who have posted nice, supportive (and believing!) messages though. DS1 and I are both great now, and I went on to have another, much better, birth with his younger brother, probably in part because by that point staff did believe that I labour quickly and fairly quietly!

Oh no! One day of a little less watching films at the end of term! However will they cope! Genuinely I don’t know whats gone wrong in this country lately

Now you're just being rude. Probably tired from your late night, bless.

ForEdgyHare · Today 09:38

We didn’t watch it. Some helpful souls at 4am did wake us up to tell us it was a win from the street 😂😂
I couldn’t care less if you watched or didn’t. But kids aren’t doing naff all in schools. There’s still 2 weeks to go. My Y10 is doing mock exams and my Y5 is doing normal lessons, spelling tests etc. So you are wrong about that 😂

Ponoka7 · Today 09:39

Pushmepullu · Today 09:12

Your niece is either very lucky or goes to an underachieving school. It’s not the last week of term. There are 3 weeks left. Learning has been severely impacted because of the weather. I hope your attitude is down to tiredness.

@Sereine
My grandchildren don't go to an under achieving primary. On the post were an OP was contemplating taking her children out of private education, she listed what their school did. My grandchildren's school, only fell short on trips out. Yet they aren't doing much this month. Year 6 have done the transition week, taken home their crap, had the dragon's den/speak out, school fair, so nothing is left. I think litter picking and semi forest school is on the cards. This morning the school is showing the match, but tbf, we are top of the county/country under 12 football teams.
If anyone wants to see a violent game, watch yesterday's rugby, St Helens vs Wigan. It was a case of trying to kill each other, whilst throwing a ball about.

OooPourUsACupLove · Today 09:40

What pisses me off is the expectation that normal civilised behaviours don't apply because it's football.

There's loads of events or interests other than football that people enjoy, but no one would consider suggesting work gives them an understanding late start the next day because they'd be laughed out of the place - unless it's football.

I live near one of the big Premier league clubs. On match day our roads are clogged, the high street is lined with police and barriers for a mile and a half, the side roads have blokes pissing, there's litter left everywhere - but hey, it's football.

Agree with all of this.

To be honest, I don't care at all what supporters do. Stay up. Wear the kit. Decorate their houses. Sing. Go without sleep. Take annual leave. Spend thousands travelling to watch matches. Whatever.

Just don't bang on to me about it. Happy to hear the score but after that, move on.

It's just a sport. Just like tennis. Or rugby. Or cricket. We're not expected to obsess about them.

And let's be honest, we're not going to win. But I have no issue with you (supporters) being obsessed, but don't drag me into your obsession because you sure as hell wouldn't be interested in me droning on about mine.

Ang69 · Today 09:42

Amazing, brilliant game!! Well done England. I watched this morning without knowing the score. Heart in mouth the last 10 minutes. I'm a proud Scot but utterly delighted for England.

This is very true, at all levels (u7 grassroots up to professional). Hilarious.

I work in healthcare. I just tell the patient to hold on a bit longer as my colleagues enjoyed the football last night and called in sick. I will also tell them that their the world won't crash and burn if less gets done.

I hope the hospitals were geared up for extra heart patients turning up at A and E! When we lived in Gib it was well known that St B's anticipated an influx of heart attack patients during big matches. I'm sure that those working in healthcare and other vital roles will be in work as normal. A Headteacher friend e-mailed parents of pupils on Thursday saying that the school day would start after Break but if that created problems for parents getting to work the school would be open at the usual time, he'll be showing the recording of the match for those who wanted it and others will be entertained!

I don’t like the tribalism or male violence associated with any big bunch of men. It’s not improving in this country. Nor do I like being told what I should be enjoying.

Other countries do not force (male) football down everybody’s throats like this, and god I wish I was in one of those every time there is a big tournament.

Many females enjoy sport, including football. Tribalism in sport exists for everyone, but any violence is wrong - whatever the circumstances.

I know the country has lots of problems - but it’s still nice having something to be cheerful about today. 🤷‍♀️.

But this was actually history - we’re the first team in history to beat Mexico at the Azteca in a World Cup. That’s a pretty big deal.

Compared with dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, landing men on the moon, the fall of the Berlin wall it's pretty insignificant, in a couple of years it will be an answer in Trivial Pursuit.

My heart was in my mouth during the last 5 minutes and I knew the result! A couple of years ago the last 10 minutes of the 2003 Rugby WC were shown on TV and I could barely watch even knowing the score for 20+ years.
