To say the anti-football lot need to calm down a little?

I didn’t stay up for the match because there was no way to make it work with my job, but if I could’ve I would’ve.

I can’t understand the actual visceral anger on here about it? It’s one night - kids won’t drop dead at school, workplaces won’t fail, but a lot of people will have just had a brilliant night.

I just don’t understand why some people can’t accept that others enjoy other things and it doesn’t need to be a big deal?

Way to reassure those who complain about the misogyny.

There are parties and then there are parties. I like interesting people, not those who’ve got nothing in their heads and rely on alcohol to try to be interesting.

Overtheatlantic · Today 08:38

You are being vvvvv unreasonable for telling anyone to “calm down”. You don’t have the right.

DancingLions · Today 08:40

I work with vulnerable people. At the start of the World Cup we had an all staff email go out reminding us that domestic violence increases during major football tournaments and to check in with service users, and a staff helpline we could call if we’re victims ourselves. This doesn’t happen with any other sport. That’s what I’m focused on during the World Cup.

I don’t really care who stays up to watch it, doesn’t affect me. Years ago I used to let my DS stay up for the major WWE events so I can’t really criticise anyone.

It’ll soon be over and then we can go back to normal.

As a teacher no they won't drop dead but they will be really tired and more likely to have behaviours which disrupt the learning of others. If you kept them up, keep them off school for the sake of the rest of us. Thanks.

And yet schools were closed half of the week before last and the same this week, and even those that were open did very little. It's funny when it's the school who closes or just sticks things on for the afternoon, it's fine and won't be to the detriment of their education. DS didn't stay up he's too young, but the hypocrisy is real.

"Seeing everyone come together to celebrate and be happy is so lovely. It’s such a nice reminder that there is more in this country that unites us than divides us."
Oh, the irony! And after all your jibes, as well, at those of us who couldn't give a monkey's about the football and therefore do not need to "calm down a little."
Watch it or not, I could not care less.
Enjoy your day (and good luck to those working in schools today supervising film-watching ).

I hate football. But I love a bit of suspension of the day to day. Im thoroughly enjoying the fact that my in box and phone will be silent until noon, and that I've had my early morning walk without the usual shouted commentary of the white van men.

But holidays are more important than football for some of us. Is that not allowed? Sorry but my kid will remember a holiday for a lifetime, not so much a football match.

You don’t have to be called Tarquin to be naused out by all the fuss and drama over a fairly routine football game.

It’s the World Cup FFS!
Football may be the MOST important activity in young people’s lives.

Nowisthetimeforicecream · Today 08:44

I had a proposal for Andy Burnham. Introduce a footballers tax. Any footballer who get more than £10k a week gets taxed at 90%. It would be win win:

  1. People would be happy as it would be the mega rich paying more.
  2. Footballers play for the love of the game not for money they wouldn't care.
  3. It would raise 1bn from the premier league alone.

It would be a victimless tax!

Oh no! One day of a little less watching films at the end of term! However will they cope! Genuinely I don’t know whats gone wrong in this country lately

I was totally with you until your snarky comment about schools. There’s still three weeks left! They will not be watching films!

Shodan · Today 08:45

nowillpowernoproblem · Today 08:01

It’s true though. It’s the end of term. The learning is done. The kids will not suffer for one day where a few of them are tired.

Lol.

So you're not a parent. You've derided teachers, healthcare workers and people who've given their own experiences of football-related negligence. Your superciliousness is laughable.

I'm going to suggest that this isn't a serious post, but merely rage bait..

That’s because tennis isn’t the national sport?

Nor is football.

Also Arthur represents Great Britain not just England. So he is more relevant to the wider population than the England football team.

PistachioTiramisu · Today 08:45

ForWiseRoseCat · Today 07:40

I'm more interested in seeing how Arthur Fery will do in Wimbledon this week. I won't get time off to watch that as it is only football fans that gets special treatment.

I didn't watch the match, I went to bed and slept. I don't care about the football world cup. Not everyone is coming together. What is it football fans just don't understand.

They'll be the usual calls for a bank holiday if England win soon. I remember when England won the Rugby World Cup and where I was, and no we didn't get a bank holiday.

Totally agree - I have zero interest in football and rather hoped they would lose and that would be the end of it. I must admit I was surprised to hear they had won!

Give me tennis any day - far more exciting and interesting.

Not what the thread is about but my school most certainly did NOT close last week for heat (or ever, for snow) and if we did "very little," it was because the temperatures inside (with no aircon and only some ineffective fans brought in from home by staff) were so high that the kids were droopy and exhausted and fit for nothing.
Bit like many of them will be today but, hey ho. Childcare, isn't it?

Violent men are the problem, not football.

Dv goes up at Christmas, during summer holidays, when there's a heatwave etc etc. They don't need a reason or a trigger.

Yes obviously carry on checking in with service users but maybe work with other organisations on the source which is violent men, rather than emails when there's a footie match.

Oh sure we aren't doing anything. Nothing at all. In fact it's a piece of piss we just chuck a couple of movies on and they all totally pay attention for those and then we order some dominoes!

Get a life. This is not reality. As for calling another woman 'love' and talking about her birth like that
... Disgusting.

It’s the end of term. They’re not doing anything, I know that from my niece who has spent the last week doing absolutely naff all.

I don’t have kids, but this is what I mean. It’s not irresponsible to let your kids watch the football, they won’t die from one day of less sleep and the school won’t burn down!

Maybe where you are but we still have two weeks left.

Oh I’m loving that one, especially no 2. Women are told in education and health aaaaallll the time that we should be working for love not money!

‘Football isn’t the problem it’s men’ well yeees … and where else are large groups of random men enabled and empowered to be violent outside football? What else are we all told to shut up and enjoy or else???

Barely even that if you met my son's teacher.

FWIW I'm in work today, worked during the pandemic (not on teams 'home learning'), work when many people are sleeping I'm on call 24/7 now until next Monday morning including 40 hours in my actual workplace, but I don't moan about people who like a bit of football when there is an international tournament on. Yet teachers always have it so hard....

Alcohol, that's one of the triggers. Christmas, hot days, football, holidays all have increased alcohol consumption.

Personally I'd have anyone found guilty of any type of assault banned from drinking forever.

It's been proven that dv goes up when England lose at football, or when someone's team loses. There are adverts about it, I heard one on the radio last week.

You are trying to prove a point by belittling someone's own experience through the work they do.

Buscobel · Today 08:52

It’s ironic @nowillpowernoproblem that every post you make reinforces the vitriol and prejudice that you’ve been complaining about out in others.

You’ve criticised anyone who doesn’t enjoy watching football, teachers and schools, someone’s experience of birth and just about everyone who doesn’t have the same thoughts and opinions as you.

I think everyone understands that it is an important sporting event. That doesn’t mean that it supersedes anything else going on in the world. You’ve said that you don’t have children, so you really aren’t in a position to comment on the experience of those who have them and those who teach them or care for them in other ways.

I didn't get compensation - thankfully, both me and DS were absolutely fine. He was born 25 minutes after they finally checked me.

I did have a birth debriefing when I still felt so upset/traumatised by it three months later and in that briefing session the senior midwife agreed that my care had been seriously below standard. They were supposed to be 'learning lessons' - if you look at the state of maternity services I'm not sure they did, no lessons have been learned from much more serious incidents.

I did feel it, that was the point, I was crying and desperate in a triage ward for two hours and ignored while all the staff sat around the tv.

I'm really sorry this happened to you.

My birth experience with my first son many many years ago was also a very traumatic and poor one and it still upsets me. So I totally empathise with you.

OP should be ashamed of her response to you.

Kittkats · Today 08:53

I believe her! They refused to examine me for the first 40 minutes of my 50 minute labour, until I crawled into their office and refused to leave. Apparently I progressed quicker than expected… The football wasn’t on though.

Anyway, I work in healthcare, went to bed last night, got up to watch the match then went back to bed. Absolutely fine and productive today!
