AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Spoke to them about airing work-related grievances on social media?

(This type of thread would absolutely lead to disciplinary action in my profession)

Excellent point.

LBFseBrom · Yesterday 22:16

You told the person they looked very nice in their outfit.

Papster · Yesterday 22:16

Ask her if she’s bitter for not being invited

FirstOneToBlathers · Yesterday 22:18

I agree it's very OTT to make an official complaint about this, but I would guess the real problem is they didn't like the feeling of being scoffed at, rather than offended as a TS fan.

It sounds like you did take sides in the argument. If you are older perhaps they see you as having more power in the organisation. It's obviously ridiculous of them to report you but I can see how it might have felt to them that you were dismissive of one person's view and supportive of the other.

Which is something that happens in workplace conversations the world over several times a day. Listen to any group of blokes talking about sports, for instance, or general discussions about films, concerts, TV programmes, groups, actors, singers, fashion, cars, books. I can't remember how it came up, but a couple of weeks ago I referred to my view that Tolkien's magnum opus should be referred to as "Bored of the Rings". It doesn't signify that I'm saying I'm superior to anyone else or that I'm right and everyone else is wrong - it's just expressing an opinion. People are perfectly entitled to dismiss my views and support other people's, it's called free will.

If someone is going to get so upset about something like this that they put in a formal complaint, they should think about whether they're fit for the world of work at all.

One nosey cow kept asking me who was at the door when my ring doorbell went off on my phone. After the third time I just said 'Your boyfriend again. He just wont take the hint.' She complained and was told in no uncertain terms to Get A Grip. It was a joke. 😂

If you were my colleague and you made that comment to me, I would think it was hilarious. It would never cross my mind to make a complaint. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Yes unfortunately

That's bonkers.

Does HR have too much time on their hands?

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 22:20

We were not scoffing at her. We were totally unaware that she liked taylor swift!

Bad luck for you that being a Taylor Swift fan has recently been made a protected characteristic.

Exactly. We often have this. One of us will say they are watching a tv pr9gramme, someone else will say they tried it, but didn't think it was very good.. it happens all the time. Someone invited me to see an ABBA tribute last week, I said no as I'm not fussed for ABBA

Oh my, the professional offended are everywhere. Extreme Taylor fans get very emotional when others dismiss her. I don’t get the hype either.
I can’t believe management felt this was okay to pull you up on.

Imagine going through life finding offence at every little thing you disagree with. Ridiculous.

Fourty years ago my manager said Duran Duran were shit.
Is it too late for me to go to an IT??
Should I phone ACAS tomorrow??

I guess your feelings over the wedding hype aren't valid then.....only hers as she is a fan.

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 22:27

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 21:37

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

Good grief 😔 . Someone will understand how this wet lettuce was offended though, so 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Then at least express your opinions when you're with "safe" people who you know won't be offended over trivial remarks. However ridiculous it is, work is work and you have to wear a mask otherwise you will make things difficult for yourself. It's tiring but that's what you do

Are you for real? Don't have an opinion on trivial things, or at least be careful who you share said opinions with lest they be upset by somebody not agreeing with their own opinion? Wow.

What happens if someone asks you if you like carrot cake and you don't? Avoid saying as much because it might make somebody else feel bad?

lazyarse123 · Yesterday 22:32

Good grief. People are getting worse. So glad I'm retired i wouldn't cope with having to keep my face straight never mind watching what I say. I would be sorely tempted to just laugh at her.

HelenaWaiting · Yesterday 22:34

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 22:15

I do agree with this in general terms but I don't think saying you don't like taylor swift is a strong opinion. It's like saying "I don't like cheese" or "I don't like war films"

Wait - you don't like cheese? What kind of monster are you?

Sorry, don't tell me ...you are made of cheese and I've offended you. I just can't stop putting my foot in it at the moment!

I was wondering this. I've not given any specifics. I'm under a forum name. I've not said anything nasty about anyone or identified my workplace or the person
