AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

Ooohh no on Friday I told a colleague Love Island was boring and the strange hairless men disturbed me - guess I’m getting my P45 tomorrow

You are meant to stare into the middle distance and say "I agree with what you say" to wvery colleague. So you are now, in fact, sacked.

I wish it was. Luckily my manager is a common sense sort and had dealt with both of us very professionally

And if the colleague stumbles across this public thread when Googling Taylor Swift for example, how professional do you think you’ll end up looking?

I do agree with this in general terms but I don't think saying you don't like taylor swift is a strong opinion. It's like saying "I don't like cheese" or "I don't like war films"

OP I was on your side until you said you didn't like cheese. I am offended and hurt, as everyone knows I love cheese, and now you've deliberately targeted me. Why? Now that's 2 people you've attacked. You also re-ignited past trauma from when year 7 Simon Higginbottom announced that he didn't want cauliflower cheese for lunch. Why do people always pick on me?

Right, now to raise a grievance for all the people who've said they don't like Evanescence! As a die hard Evanescence fan it pains me deeply when people say they don't like them. 😭

GCAcademic · Yesterday 22:57

Some people just shouldn't be in the workplace.

what if they say they only like one or 2 songs, but other than that

We were not scoffing at her. We were totally unaware that she liked taylor swift!

She said ts chose a venue for privacy and you said "what, in madison square garden?" and laughed.
Don't get me wrong, if you had said that to me it wouldn't affect me in the slightest, but I'm guessing she is a person who can't handle that you laughed at her.
She hasn't complained because you don't like taylor swift.

If it's Bring Me To Life or My Immortal it doesn't count! Those two songs were everywhere. 😝 If they say something random like Haunted or Lacrymosa then I might reconsider my position. 😌

sugarapplelane · Yesterday 23:04

I think I am about to get a disciplinary too Op. the other day I put my foot in it and told a colleague who had just bought a pair of sketchers that I wouldn’t buy a pair as I didn’t want to wear the same trainers as my 80 year old MIL

Thank god he saw the funny side, but I did feel a bit bad for saying it. I did sort of directly criticise his choice of trainers. I have foot in mouth syndrome me 😂😂

Bring Me To Life, mainly becuase i like youtube on with different shows tributes and they add the song Bring Me To Life to different ones eg supernatural tribute with song Bring Me To Life etc

How were we supposed to have guessed something so specific 😂😂😂

Obviously it's ridiculous and the person reprimanding you knew this, but they have to follow the company policy. Next time be careful what you say and keep strong opinions to yourself if you work with snowflakes. Break chat is nice but work colleagues are not your friends, anything you say can backfire against you

TBH it's hardly a strong opinion. Gaza and Israel, or even trans rights I'd have understood: Politics, I could see also: But if you can't even talk about celebs without minding your Ps and Qs, what's left? Jam making? That'd probably annoy someone too.

You should feel bad, everyone knows Skechers are for middle aged women, not 80 yos 😂

My 17 yo son had new Nike trainers for work, his 50ish yo old colleague said ooh they're nice, are they Skechers, he said 'no I wouldnt be seen dead in those'. Literally everyone in the office wears Skechers (all middle aged women). Luckily he still has a job 😂

I would sack you though, i love them,,esp the sparkly ones 😂

Fair enough! I have too many favourites of theirs I can't choose just one! It's hard enough to pick just one song from each album.
They've just released a new album that's really good as well. 😁

I’m 51 but firmly into my adidas. Maybe when I get to 89 I’ll start wearing Sketchers….. 😂

thats understandable, for me i find some groups or singers do one or 2 songs i like but then i tie that song to a show, i like

Started an easily identifiable thread mocking them on social media?

I definitely don't think I'll be able to go to work and not express opinions about totally normal things in order not to upset someone with very specific triggers that I know nothing about

It’s going to be tricky for you and your manager to interact normally with that colleague again!

Having no idea what ridiculous sensitivities he or she has and that you may be reported again would not make for a relaxed, cordial relationship.

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

🙈 Good. Grief.

😂😂 I do love my Adidas and converse as a rule, but Skechers are my festival and city break trainer of choice due to plantar fasciitis sadly! I am 46 not 89 so not doing well 🙈
