AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

No it wasn't like that at all. I don't have more power. I was boiling the kettle, other worker sitting down with complainer (no idea they liked TS)

I didn't say you did have more power I said that because you are older you may seem to have more authority. And yes it does seem like 'that' (you agreeing with one colleague and being incredulous at the other colleague's contribution) to me hence why I said what I did.

You called them Love.

Dollymylove · Yesterday 21:49

Jesus christ I thought you must have made some awful racist or homophobic comment!! God help us all if people are getting upset about a bit of banter abiut Taylor Swifts wedding 🙄
Unless of course Taylor was actually present when yo u said it 🤣🤣

CountFucula · Yesterday 21:49

My god. I hope the manager gave them
short shrift.

Did you say hi how are you?

Then look at them funny?

Vintageshirtsearch · Yesterday 21:50

I definitely don't think I'll be able to go to work and not express opinions about totally normal things in order not to upset someone with very specific triggers that I know nothing about

Just. Tell. Us. We're not four year olds in a guessing game.

Yeah but other peoples ideas are good/ridicilous/funny 😁

KeepPumping · Yesterday 21:51

Did you say
"You think I"m funny, you think I"m a clown, here to amuse you?"

BitterTits · Yesterday 21:52

Well, everyone's really got the arse over this haven't they? How dare the OP have a little fun regaling us with a ridiculously petty complaint?

Fuckin ell, when did everyone get so snippy?

I don’t think even she would be offended, I doubt she’d give a shit

You sent an email in Gen Z speak, Capitalising. Each. Word. And. Using. Copious. Full. Stops in a tedious manner?

😂

You asked them a mild personal question as small talk?
You asked them in a meeting what they thought about something?

You asked them to fuck off?

RosalieRosa · Yesterday 21:53

Based on this thread, I am wondering if you get through your life by laughing at it. You did it with your colleague and you did it with this thread. I have a tendency to sometimes find a way to laugh at things to make myself feel better too.

But this can be interpreted by some people to mean that you are snarky or nihilistic and someone not to be taken seriously. Which isn't great!

Anyway, I am not a swifty or anything but I wouldn't slag her off at work, even though what you said really wasn't that bad at all. It was probably just your tone

During a coffee break, another staff member said they thought Taylor Swifts wedding was over the top and a bit ridiculous. I said "yeah I agree" the complainer said it was to keep it private and I laughed and said "in madison square garden" the other staff member said he didn't get the hype over taylor swift and I said I didn't either. End of conversation.
Apparently this deeplynupset the complainer as they love taylor swift and they felt mocked.

🤔Is this for real ?

Then at least express your opinions when you're with "safe" people who you know won't be offended over trivial remarks. However ridiculous it is, work is work and you have to wear a mask otherwise you will make things difficult for yourself. It's tiring but that's what you do

ChipswithMayonnaise · Yesterday 21:54

Any chance that the person you were talking to has form for drawing others into conversations that will upset the complainer? In which case you would not have been aware, but the other anti-TS colleague might have staged the conversation knowing that complainer would feel mocked. It is a subtle form of bullying.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 21:54

So…..why did your manager even tell you? Couldn’t he have just dismissed it and said ‘that’s not a complaint’?

Anyway, can you have lots more Taylor Swift conversations in the office, along the lines of ‘her dress was shit’ and ‘her new husband has a moustache’ and any other random commentary?!

I would happily talk about her all day if it pissed off the office weirdo 😆.

KeepPumping · Yesterday 21:54

Did you ask them to guess what task you’d like them to do next?

While waving a jar of coffee at them, LOL

I cannot tell you how boring and totally normal the conversation was. It must have lasted less than 30 seconds and was probably the most time I've ever spent thinking about taylor swift.

I work in HR and I once had someone raise a grievance against their line manager so he had said ‘hope your all had a nice long weekend’. He did not acknowledge that the Queen had died in his statement. Some people have too much time on their hands.

They were mocked, do they not understand the difference between reality and their personal feelings?

I totally disagree with this. I think it's up to managers to tell complainers when they are not having common sense. Allowing a staff member to lodge a complaint that they are upset if someone doesn't like a singer they like is crazy

Wow this person is 30? They're acting about 10! Spent too much time in the house 🤣and doesn't know what real life is!

Agreed. I'm sure Taylor has more important things to be getting on with 😂
