Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

It’s one night of fun, and it’s about being a part of something. I remember being at school during a long ago World Cup and the school opening really early to let us all watch it together. I can’t remember who the host country was, Japan maybe? But it was an early kick off, I have no idea who we played or if we won but I still have those memories and I remember the excitement. One day doesn’t matter. No one is going to be sitting in a job they hate years from now and thinking “If only I didn’t miss that day of school because of the England match in 2026”

I’m old and tired now so I won’t be watching it, I reckon a 7 year old will have more chance of staying up than I do. These big events are like Christmas at that age, let them enjoy the magic!

This will age me. I remember being at primary school, and we all trooped into the hall to watch the school TV, David Hemery win the 400 metres hurdles in Mexico in a world record time. David Coleman commentating.

Possibly because it was later at night, and so started a bit after 7:30am UK time.

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 03/07/2026 00:00

I took my sister to Mexico.

Tequila?

No, just for a holiday...

anotherside · 03/07/2026 00:00

Do you lot never break up for summer? Here in Ireland we’ve already been off a week! Don’t worry we’ll stay up late and cheer on Mexico, sorry England for you!

HelenaWilson · 03/07/2026 00:00

its just football. Honestly the hype around it is bizarre, I just don’t get it.

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

GrandTheftWalrus · 03/07/2026 00:02

I got DD9 up at 2am to watch the first scotland match but they were all off school on the monday anyways. Tbf England are in the world cup a lot more than us (unfortunately) so I wouldnt let them stay up. Maybe record the match and let them watch next day?

For England it was 4 years ago. For scotland it was nearly 30 years ago so a much bigger deal up here.

No, we never break up for summer.
Supporting the opponents of England? There's a surprise.

I remember Eriic Liddell winning his race. There was no tv so the school caretaker re enacted it for us. A marvellous moment.

I think it's something to do with Cliff Richard at the Wimbledon Tennis Gala. He may sing if it rains.

(That's not the Kiki Dee song 'If It Rains' but something to pass the time if the roof jams.)

Isn't Sir Cliff marvellous? How old is he now, 103? He should do Eurovision again. We'd win.

SoSoLong · 03/07/2026 00:12

Who cares what he says, he's a (mediocre) football manager, not the Pope. Watch it, don't watch it, let the kids watch or not, I'm sure people can make their own decisions without directions from him.

Are pubs actually going to be selling alcohol those extended hours?

Yes

OriginalUsername2 · 03/07/2026 00:14

IonianNerveGrip · 02/07/2026 22:21

Yes, you can bet they didn't consult with the local GPs before coming out with that one.

I think they mean we won’t believe you if you call them in “sick” on Monday, not that GPs will fake it for them!

Okiedokie123 · 03/07/2026 00:16

tillyandmilly · 02/07/2026 23:04

I don’t get the frenzy! It’s football - its not even the final - personally can’t wait until it’s over - now Wimbledon is on far more interesting!

Agreed!
Also I don’t get why people keep saying “it’s a one off” when it clearly isn’t. If they win there win be another match at UK Silly O’Clock and another if they win that? (And a bunch more in four years time…..!)
And why so much fuss this time around? There hasn’t been for previous World cups?

BringBackCatsEyes · 03/07/2026 00:23

My 17 yo will be watching it somewhere. I have categorically said I will NOT be collecting him (we live rurally) at 3am. He'll have to sort himself out.
He's changed his usual 7.30am Monday driving lesson!

I don’t agree that they should miss school but everything is becoming so joyless.

I’m fucking cringing for you 😳😳

You sound like one of those weirdo ‘football twitter’ incels that love to pipe up with the “anyone but England” bs.

How tragic 🤣
Mexico don’t need you. They have their own nation’s support. Stay in your lane.

JohnBullshit · 03/07/2026 00:40

Stay in your lane? Altitude got to you already, has it?
If kids get a few hours' kip in advance they'll be fine, same as any adults who don't get pissed up drinking through the night. Other countries can cheer on whoever they like when they didn't qualify themselves.

TopazQuartz · 03/07/2026 00:46

MJagain · 02/07/2026 22:20

I’m. I football fan but this is both ridiculous and probably illegal. As if GPs need the effort of writing notes on some jumped up headteachers say so

This! The last thing we need is precious doctor time being taken up with sleepy but otherwise (usually) young and healthy families who are not sick.

TopazQuartz · 03/07/2026 00:53

Cathandkin · 02/07/2026 23:24

Teachers in the UK don't tell parents what to do in their own homes, either. I don't know where you got that from?

Quite a common perception here in the UK actually.

I’m all for the pubs staying open and the kids staying up and skyving off school John. I think it’s great. Don’t you worry about me 🤪 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

And of course countries who didn’t qualify can cheer on who they like. But the Anglo-phobes who choose to cheer on whoever is against England are salty and embarrassing.

If it’s not live then what’s the point? Either watch or don’t watch, but watching it hours after everyone else seems pointless

Why? If you get up and watch it right away without looking at any news, it will be fine. Maybe he could have a sleepover with a friend or two and they all watch together.

Exactly, the schools will be running down by now, doing a lot of the fun things they've not been able to schedule. The Mayor of New York told children that he had made a new law when there was a big sporting thing on, there would be no bedtimes.

To be fair, he didn't. He made a jokey executive order saying no bedtimes while the Knicks were in the NBA finals, which were a really exciting few days. I can see why Tuchel made a similar joke because World Cup fever in the US, especially in areas that are hosting, has been amazing.

I took my young kids to Harry Potter book launches at midnight and they remain SUCH fond memories for us all. We would just put them to bed early and wake them up to take them out. Life, and particularly childhood, are short. You may as well have fun with it and if football is your thing, that's just as memorable as standing in line dressed as Harry Potter when you're 9.

Obviously, if the memory is going to be Dad got a bit drunk and then lost his shit because Mexico won (which is very likely), then don't do that!
