Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

I remember the pubs being open late nights/very early doors when the world cup was in Korea (2002?) and going to watch the match before heading into work (drinking coffee not booze), so that's not a new thing. Don't remember seeing kids there though but don't doubt some of them would be watching at home.

I'd send mine in tired rather than give them a day off though.

DrCoconut · 02/07/2026 23:24

Am I the only one with kids that can pull all nighters if they're interested enough in something? I'm not really seeing what the issue is here. Watch the football or don't but life goes on as normal the next day.

I am from lreland. I am totally confused. Surely it's the parents business if the kids watch a match or not. I am a teacher but it's not my place to tell the parents what they can do in their own homes. For goodness sake it's one night. I sincerely wish lreland were there and then we could have some mighty fun here.

Teachers in the UK don't tell parents what to do in their own homes, either. I don't know where you got that from?

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 02/07/2026 23:25

Children need to learn the futility of hope, and staying up late to watch that shower of shite getting battered by Mexico is a perfect lesson for them.

Possibly from the post earlier about a head teacher saying that if children were kept off school, they would be excluded from end of term activities.

Gooseling · 02/07/2026 23:28

If you don’t want to go to the pub there’s a very simple solution - don’t go.

If you don’t want your children staying up late and to go to school at the normal time there’s a very simple solution - don’t let your children stay up late and take them to school at the normal time.

Only on Mumsnet would the pearl clutches be horrified at this.

Heh. 😁

English parents might as well buy their kids Mexico shirts to wear on the night.

I still don't understand why kids don't watch it at 6.30am before school rather than the middle of the night live.

Where’s the fun in that?

Sounds lame as fuck.

That's keeping them off school, not "telling them what to do in their own homes".
Different.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

Backtrack and apology incoming as soon as they receive feedback from parents on that one 😂 seen it a million times

Notashamed13 · 02/07/2026 23:34

Tried to get my nipper who is 10 to stay up and watch the game that took place on Saturday.....(we were camping just to make it extra exciting!)......she lasted about 10 min before falling asleep! Its one night.....if they can stay up for it then fair play!

I think it’s a FOMO thing. They don’t want to do it themselves but they are worried they’ll miss out on something exciting and memorable so they are bitching about all those who do it.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 02/07/2026 23:36

I'm not sure how I feel about this one tbh (and I've been teaching for over 24 years now!)
I tutor a secondary student who absolutely loves his football and is very keen to watch the game on Monday morning. So alongside his parents we came to an arrangement that we can start his morning session a little later.
It's great I can offer that flexibility for him as I know that's not necessarily possible in schools and I think he will appreciate the compromise.

Does your school understand the role of a doctor?! As if they’re going to “write notes” for school age children who are ill for one day. The head should be reported for that - it’s encouraging everyone to make GP appointments for very minor illnesses for fear of missing out on end of term fun. They’re over run as it is.

I would HATE my kids to attend a school like this. It’s Term 6 and the World Cup happens only every four years. Let them have a bit of fun!

Ladamesansmerci · 02/07/2026 23:37

I think kids staying up as a one off is fine (especially secondary aged children, most primary kids won't last). I'm more concerned about the amount of drink drivers who will be on the road in the morning!

kittensinthekitchen · 02/07/2026 23:39

Are pubs actually going to be selling alcohol those extended hours?

Doctors don't give notes for children or for one day. How do they propose you obtain them?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 02/07/2026 23:45

This will age me. I remember being at primary school, and we all trooped into the hall to watch the school TV, David Hemery win the 400 metres hurdles in Mexico in a world record time. David Coleman commentating.

What's happening?

I think it's something to do with Cliff Richard at the Wimbledon Tennis Gala. He may sing if it rains.

(That's not the Kiki Dee song 'If It Rains' but something to pass the time if the roof jams.)

Parent will write:

Dear Teacher, I am a Doctor. Little Kevin was off school on Monday cos he was feeling very poorly and covered in spots, but he's better now.

Yours Sincerely, Doctor (illegible)
