Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

If you don’t want to go to the pub there’s a very simple solution - don’t go.

If you don’t want your children staying up late and to go to school at the normal time there’s a very simple solution - don’t let your children stay up late and take them to school at the normal time.

Only on Mumsnet would the pearl clutches be horrified at this.

The similar thread ahead of the opening Scotland game was full of dire prognostications about 5am closing leading to the total collapse of civilisation, pitched battles in the street, folk dropping dead from alcohol poisoning, streets being closed due to crashed cars etc etc

Totally predictably, nothing much out of the ordinary happened whatsoever.

Mumsnet, a place that utterly abhors football and considers anyone having a 2nd half-lager to be screeching alcoholic. It's almost the perfect shit-storm of ridiculous hysteria.

I’m all for the pubs staying open and the kids staying up and skyving off school John. I think it’s great. Don’t you worry about me 🤪 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

And of course countries who didn’t qualify can cheer on who they like. But the Anglo-phobes who choose to cheer on whoever is against England are salty and embarrassing.

Yep, with you there.

"Obviously each school will have their own policies. I’ve seen some offering to show the game on replay in schools the next morning although I can’t see that working because at least one kid will know the score and ruin it for everyone." @cluckinell2

I had to laugh at this because it's so true 😂It's actually a really nice idea though, I'm a teacher & I know the kids would love this!

Another poster said it's this type of out of the norm, once in a blue moon, whole country/world together that makes proper childhood memories so honestly if the parents want to facilitate it then why not & the schools would want to lighten up with the threats re excluding students from plays & other end of school activities

No, we never break up for summer.
Supporting the opponents of England? There's a surprise.

Not all of us

AngryBeyondWords03 · 03/07/2026 02:33

Child goes to bed early
Wakes up at 12.50. Then goes back to bed for awhile after

Or

Get up early , say 6am, and watch the recorded game before school

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

LOL. So glad DDs are grown up now and free from the tyranny of school admin.

It must be so exhausting to live your life constantly down on anything which might possibly cause someone else to have a good time. However do people get through life having to whinge and complain constantly about things they don’t have to do.

You do know they haven’t passed a law making it obligatory yes?

It really is very simple. Don’t go to the pub, and send the kids to school if you’re not interested. Job done. It’s not that hard.

As for the head teacher posturing about doctors notes and banning children from end of year parties and such, he’ll never be able to make that one fly. Banning a genuinely sick child from an end of year party would almost certainly be against the law.

Even in employment law you only require a doctor’s note after 7 days so he has no right to make such claims and has only succeeded in making himself look like the self important twat he clearly is.

what a brilliant summary

i had a lovely time in the pub last night, singing and hugging and feeling a little bit of happiness

the level of joy sucking fun police on here

everything has to be so regimented, nobody is allowed to keep kids up, have too much to drink, eat anything just for the fun of it, wear inappropriate clothes, fly, drive a new car

the list is endless. Last time my boys were young enough for a late night World Cup football game the schools let them go in late

spoiler alert, they are still alive and are doing Masters degrees and everything

SpidersAreShitheads · 03/07/2026 03:09

In fairness to Thomas Tuchel, he was put on the spot in a press conference and asked for his message to parents.

His response is very jokey and tongue in cheek - he had a wide grin.

This really has been blown up into something much bigger than it needed to be. It was a light-hearted and fun reply, not a call to arms 😂

I also think it wouldn’t kill schools to offer a bit of flexibility. It’s the end of term, the kids are tired, and everyone - including the teachers - is counting down towards the holidays. They used to offer a 10am start on occasions like this, which I think is a lovely compromise.

Of course school is really important but moments in time spent with family have real value too and we should accommodate both. Everything seems to have become so binary, it’s all or nothing! No child is suddenly going to flunk school because they had an hour off after the World Cup game.

If you and your family don’t like football, this doesn’t have to affect you. But all this sniffing and looking down on others for daring to enjoy “chav” football is just shitty. Miserable bastards.

What a miserable school. Even our office allows adjusted working hours on Monday with an 11am start.

Your school sounds horrible. What is the harm of kids missing 1 day before summer holidays?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 03/07/2026 03:41

Goodness, the watch parties will be rat-arsed before kick off

Okiedokie123 · 03/07/2026 00:16

Agreed!
Also I don’t get why people keep saying “it’s a one off” when it clearly isn’t. If they win there win be another match at UK Silly O’Clock and another if they win that? (And a bunch more in four years time…..!)
And why so much fuss this time around? There hasn’t been for previous World cups?

You are obviously clueless about the passion people have around the world for football. That’s sad because you come over as very smug.
I gave centre court tickets, but I also love football.
The atmosphere at an international football match is amazing, far better than the crowd at Queens or Wimbledon.

Do you lot never break up for summer? Here in Ireland we’ve already been off a week! Don’t worry we’ll stay up late and cheer on Mexico, sorry England for you!

Do the Irish ever actually get to the World Cup?
We don’t need your support thank you. Must be all the rain over there making you so miserable.
Sorry ( not) that you can’t play football.

Hmmm yes quite…. I mean that would make sense seeing as Ireland never got as far as making it to the World Cup in the first place 🤣

I live near 3 pubs. Am dreading it.
Bloody football.

I bet, the pub down the road from us is staying open til 4am, residential area, we are far away enough not to hear the noise but I feel sorry for the closer households. I know it’s a one off, but the beer garden where they are showing the game is large and will be packed, and as they aren’t booking tables, they are encouraging people to arrive in the afternoon, the games not til 1am, I can imagine the police/emergency services will have a busy night.

hay5689 · 03/07/2026 05:05

I’m not English but it’s the biggest sporting event in the world, exams are over and it’s nearly end of term. There’s enough misery in the world at the moment so it’s good to see everyone (except MN apparently) getting together and enjoying themselves. I’ve loved watching all the videos of the fans from every country celebrating, its great to see people from all walks of life getting along.

Supersleepysheepy · 03/07/2026 05:12

The thing is, particularly for primary school children, there will probably be a lot of moving up mornings going on at this time of year that are really helpful for managing transition and alleviating any worries or nervousness they have about a new teacher. A little more important than staying up all night for a football match. It's not like it's the final.

JustMyView13 · 03/07/2026 05:23

I think let the kids live the moment, They’ll remember it forever. Ok it’s not the final, but it could be Englands final game in this years competition,

Quite a common perception here in the UK actually.

Bizarre!

UniquePinkSwan · 03/07/2026 06:13

Why are non football fans the absolute worst when a major tournament is on? Let people enjoy themselves. I personally hope England get stuffed but I have no problems with people enjoying themselves while they do. It’s every 4 years.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 03/07/2026 06:13

Raindropskeepfallingon · 02/07/2026 21:59

Tuchel was out of order and irresponsible. It’s a last 16 match not the final. There will be many many more opportunities to watch England’s mediocre performances at major tournaments and his comment that England needed children’s support was laughable. A match that doesn’t even start until 1am is not a bit of fun staying up a bit late, it’s a sleepless night and recipe for miserable grumpy children for a couple of days afterwards.

It is almost the summer holidays. What are they going to learn for those weeks? Chill out.

Moonnstarz · 03/07/2026 06:17

No I don't agree with it unless the same view will be given to other sporting events in the future or if it was the final (or semi final).

I also find it quite funny that people think primary schools are winding down. We are certainly not. We still have the rest of the curriculum for this year to cover. The topics are divided up across the terms so we only started the last bits following half term and need the time to cover it all. Apart from the autumn term in the run up to Christmas I have come to realise that this second part of the summer term is the busiest. All the events people mention take time out from learning so we are constantly on catch up. The only time I think it is true that they are winding down is the very last week.
Also secondary this will certainly not be the case. I even worked in one school where the head would come round on the very last day to check no one was watching films, doing anything irrelevant and that the students were still doing work.

I also think people who say they will send their child to bed early are living in dream land. Kids will not be tired early and if they know they are going to be getting up in the night they will be excited. It will be pointless even trying.
I get that people will do what they want but it's then the knock on effect on others. Handing over a tired child to a teacher the next day isn't fair....plus it won't just be the Monday they will be tired, it usually rolls over to the next day too.
It's also meant to be really hot again so it will be hot classrooms with irritable children.
