Surely this is going too far. I wouldn’t agree with it if it was the final.

At our school we have been told doctors notes will be required for the day after the match for ‘illness’. Any flouting and the child will not be allowed to take part in the end of term party or the organised school trip.

I get that they might feel they’re in a tricky spot, but a child might genuinely be ill, and the GP surgery isn’t going to care that the school changed their policy for the day, they still aren’t writing a note for one day of a fever or vomiting!

OverOrUnderprotective · 02/07/2026 22:23

I don't care really whether other kids are allowed to stay up or not. With my toddler we would have hell to pay for several days of his sleep cycle was so badly disrupted but for other kids or families who are passionate about football it might be worth it.

However I'm not sure it's a good idea for pubs to stay open till 5am. Drunk plus sleepless doesn't sound like a great combination. Maybe if they only serve coffee / tea and place a brochure for anger management on every seat...

PollyBell · 02/07/2026 22:24

Parents can think for themselves cant they? If people dont want to do it they dont have too

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 02/07/2026 22:28

I still don't understand why kids don't watch it at 6.30am before school rather than the middle of the night live.

Smeuse · 02/07/2026 22:29

You don't have to watch the game or go to the pub

Rothburypixie · 02/07/2026 22:32

We’ll probably be knocked out by Mexico anyway so for the people who enjoy it they might as well celebrate, if you don’t then don’t watch!

I don’t know why people on MN have to moan about something they don’t have to bloody do!

CoastalCalm · 02/07/2026 22:32

Just avoid the score and watch it in the morning before school - fast forward to the good bits and probably done and dusted in ten mins based on last game 😆

BogRollBOGOF · 02/07/2026 22:37

I don't envy our attendance officer, but tbh I think I'd rather our attendance took the hit than have to work in the midst of 800 hyper-tired, hyper-excited/ disappointed teenagers who aren't great at emotional regulation at the best of times...

Personally I shall come into work well rested after a good night's sleep.
My teenagers are no great sports fans either.

They can say that all they like, but doctors won't give a note for one day.

Are you Scottish and bitter?

Cue an increase in drunk / drug driving, accidents, fights and domestic violence. I fundamentally don't agree the pubs should stay open. The emergency services are going to be very busy.

Good luck with that.
GPs are there to see people who need their help, not write notes for an over zealous school.
You also have to pay for that service, so the parents could charge that back to the school.
i think your school is in for a battle.

noworklifebalance · 02/07/2026 22:09

This.
Primary school age and probably y7’s will struggle to stay up.
The way England generally play, and now at altitude, I doubt many people will be able to stay awake much after 1pm.

Tuchel should not make unnecessary comments like this - just leave it to the schools and parents.

Watching England play is enough to send insomniacs to sleep

I’m pretty certain that the child would have to be off for at least a week before a doctor can consider issuing a Drs note anyway. I would have thought that in this day and age, especially as schools are also employers of staff who will also have to self cert for the first week of illness before being able to get a Drs note, that they would have realised by now that they can’t bully/ manipulate parents into sending their kids to school by demanding a doctors note for just one day off. Like you said, the school aren’t ever going to see that Dr’s note for a one day sickie pulled around the same time as a major World Cup game 😂

Hope they consider the same hype for the rugby World Cup next year, but I doubt it.

They will in Wales 😁

🙄🙄🙄

Ibi · 02/07/2026 22:50

Completely unreasonable. Like everyone in the UK, we are obliged to do everything the England manager says to do.

howdoidoitalone · 02/07/2026 22:51

God forbid people have some fun eh?

I personally won’t stay up as it’ll be impossible to make it work with my work schedule, but I envy everyone who is!

That’s really short sighted. Maybe they could just have an easier day for both staff and pupils instead. It’s not like it happens every year.

I don’t watch football myself, so I’m not biased.

The point is if the child is ill, the school seem to say taht they wont accept the parents word. Thats not on and possibly illegal.

musicandmen · 02/07/2026 22:54

whatyagotcooking · 02/07/2026 22:05

Most kids won’t manage to stay awake until 1am as much as they’d like to and tell you that they will. It’s a moot point.

When it was Scotland. My 10 year old went to bed, got up for the game and then went back to bed
