To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 20:16

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

The fact that your comments are getting deleted shows that you seem to like insulting people for no real reason.

Or boring woke people can’t take criticism, but are experts at giving it.

And I know few who will be watching. I certainly won’t be. Don’t care! And such a ridiculous suggestion for a BH - just to watch a football match 🤯

I know hundreds and hundreds of people watching it!
All with joy in them. It may be our last match, but something to remember.
You don’t care, but lots love it.

So you don’t believe that DA rises greatly during events like this? That’s up to you of course but I’m an outlier because I think the safety of women should be prioritised over some crappy sport.

Im sure many women are looking forward to it ending.

you could suck the life out of everyone, with your constant negativity.
I am involved with a local woman’s shelter. They have told me they are watching the football.
Its not the events it’s certain men.

I wondered how long it would be before 'woke' got trotted out.

So it doesn’t increase then? I would prefer to take the word of the CPS etc than a random person on the internet.

You can insult me all you like. I just think it’s pathetic that the country is expected to lose its shit over this. I think it’s very telling that the anthem is Wonderwall.

If it’s your thing then crack on. But it’s not for everyone, so let’s not pretend otherwise. I do hope England loses then people will finally shut up about it 🤷‍♀️

There will be singing and dancing in the streets if England win and general jubilation, I don't see how it will be possible to avoid knowing the result.

Perhaps where you live. Luckily not everywhere.

It is so nice not living near a pub anymore.

This thread is about us getting a Bank Holiday, which most people have disagreed with.
You took it in a very negative direction.
You are well within your rights to start a thread on violence and football matches. This was not what this was supposed to be about.

Are we taking a day off for the rugby or the Women’s football? No! It’s not even a final. It’s just a regular match! Watch it and enjoy it if you want. This was just a silly post tbh to cause a bit of rage baiting on both sides. Good luck to the team but this whole debate is nonsense!

A lot more people are interested in men's football than men's rugby or women's football.

And that’s up to them but let’s not pretend that it’s really ‘history in the making’.

You said I could suck the life out of anything - that’s fairly insulting.

Still, I’m so glad I don’t encounter people in real life like those on this thread. Most people seem capable of living their lives as normal.

Purplebunnie · Yesterday 22:24

A Bank Holiday for our patron saint would be more appropriate, especially if we revert back to St Edmund and could get rid of the St George flag It's really difficult to paint a dragon on a roundabout.

Just to make you feel better.
I am watching it and not taking Monday off.
Nor is my husband.
Football is the biggest Sport in the world, so yes a big deal for many.

Doesn’t make me feel better because I don’t care what you do tbh. Not in a mean way but I simply don’t - it’s none of my business. Enjoy the football - good for you and I hope the England team do well - but back to the OP’s post, the premise of having a BH for a simple match is still nonsense. Have a good evening.

The whole discussion by the OP was that we should have one. That’s what I’m answering. Anyway good night.

You can't be serious?
DH has an important meeting on Monday that loads of people from his company and the client's company are attending - booked months in advance. DS is attending a work event on Monday which has also been booked months in advance. Hundreds of people going. What about people with hospital appointments, operations, car work, whatever. I just can't imagine why anyone thinks that it would be OK just to say, oh yes, Monday can be a bank holiday. What do you do for work that is so binnable for all the employees at almost zero notice?

Are you sure the clients will turn up? They may have spent half the night in the pub!

No wonder the uk has one of the lowest productivity per capital whe people want to bunk off because of a football match.

Yes no wonder! The lazy workforce are the problem! Ban all sports I say they are too much of a distraction.

You must have worked in a very dull office.
My daughter works in the City. It’s buzzing and she said most people are engaging with the football.
I work in a school and the enthusiasm in the students is infectious.
Poor you.

Typical footy supporter response.
No group interest in your sport so it must be a very boring office and we deserve your pity.😖

Our office had (probably still has) multiple groups & associations but because there is no mass interest in one particular sport..........😆😆😆😆
There were groups for walking, squash, cricket, table tennis, a bridge club, art, drama, a very loose group who would do various things like theatre, paintballing, fine dining etc and believe it or not.... even a five a side but there was never an expectation to watch or talk about one specific sport to avoid being labelled "dull".

If that is what yours and your daughter's workplaces are like ...... I am glad I took early retirement should such lemming behaviour be contagious.😁

My daughter also took us to the Queens final. We have Wimbledon Centre Court tickets. We went to Twickenham to see the six nations.
We adore literature, film, opera and theatre.
What a ridiculous response.
My husband has played football in third world countries and provided local children with football boots and nets/ balls.
Football can be played anywhere. He has played it in the desert. It is played in slums and backstreets world wide.
Open up your eyes and see beyond your own little space.
