To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Let’s have a BH for the final, if we get there, not for a R16 game.

Yes, Scotland had one but it’s a different situation. They qualified for the WC for the 1st time in 28 years which is a fantastic achievement for them but 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 qualify for every big tournament and are there to compete to win.

It would be too short notice We are always seeing how GP surgeries are struggling to fit in appointments as it is A no notice BL wont help

Surely if they'd progressed yes but a bit cringeworthy and premature at the group stages surely?

Yes op I support an extra BH <for any reason tbf>.

The majority of people in Scotland didn’t get one!
only 6 out of 32 local authorities authorised it and apart from the NHS cos they aren’t already f*cked I don’t know anyone else who got the day off.

I am pleased to see someone who has actually seen a bank holiday anywhere in Scotland. I saw it announced, but not one instance of it here. Scotland. Borders.

I would support a bank holiday anywhere in the UK for a win and a homecoming.

otherwise, nope

Nomorefcukstogive · 01/07/2026 21:05

Fucking hell people on here are so negative

GreenWheat · 01/07/2026 21:05

Our family are a football family and I don't think a bank holiday at short notice for a match that's not even as far as the quarter finals is a remotely sensible idea.

Scotland being in a major international football tournament is very rare occurrence, plus they were not likely to progress further. That is very different to England, who are in a lot more international tournaments.

Most people can manage a day after interrupted sleep, it's a choice whether or not you stay up. DH and DS will be, I won't be.

No.
its a bloody football match..

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/07/2026 21:08

Would you mind if your long awaited Drs appt / surgery / prebooked MOT etc was cancelled with 5 days notice?

I think you are being very unreasonable.

just book some annual leave if you really can’t function without missing a couple of hours sleep

ForgotWhatIDidYesterday · 01/07/2026 21:08

It’s my Mum’s funeral on Monday- we’ve already waited a month since she died- I really don’t want to have to postpone it for bloody football!

Nourishinghandcream · 01/07/2026 21:08

Absolutely absurd suggestion and hopefully has no standing IRL whatsoever.
All that cost & disruption just so a few people can watch a bag of wind being kicked around.
Bad enough the competition is on BBC, why can't these minority pass times be put on pay to view platforms?

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/07/2026 21:08

How ridiculous, there are some utter nut jobs on MN.

Not sure which tournament you’re watching but in the one I’m watching 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 won their group & progressed to the knockout stage. They won their R32 game tonight & will play Mexico next in the R16.

I was talking about Scotland's BH.

FFS

JoshLymanSwagger · 01/07/2026 21:20

It's a game of football.

Life still goes on.

It most certainly does not warrant a Bank Holiday.

There will be plenty more opportunities for the England team to disappoint their fans in the future.

Scotland didn’t get a Bank Holiday for having a world game, they got a bank holiday to mark 28 years of not being in the World Cup. For fairness comeback in 2054 if England fails to qualify again until then

His Majesty King Charles has approved the Royal Proclamation, confirming the bank holiday which will allow Scotland to celebrate the first time the men’s national team has participated in the tournament since 1998.

It has also been noted that most of Scotland didn’t get the day off for a Bank Holiday. It’s just a name for a day, and as long as employers provide employees with enough days leave to cover the statutory minimum this extra day can be counted within their existing leave allowance. They can book the day in line with company policy or take it at another time in lieu in line with company policy

As is the case with other bank holidays in Scotland, there is no law requiring banks or any other businesses to close. Employer policy regarding bank holidays will be set out in contracts of employment.

FFS……whatever next?!?!

LondonLass2026 · 01/07/2026 21:27

Even if it were to happen, there's no way my work would grant it. There has been a wave of recent redundancies and everyone is terrified. There's just too much work to do in any case.

I've always loved football though, and will try to watch it but I'm awful at staying up for anything past 10pm.

Settlersa · 01/07/2026 21:28

What about peoples medical appointments as we know the NHS will take the day if offered

Be especially great for some poor fucker doing Colonoscopy prep the night before.

hahabahbag · 01/07/2026 21:29

Watch it at 6am before work, bonus is you can fast forward through the boring bits

TidalShore · 01/07/2026 21:32

Whilst I have not watched a single minute of the football, nor do I intend to, and I am well aware I am just as likely to get a day off because I've been crashed into by a flying pig, I for one would love an extra day off and would be very supportive of the idea 🙃

tachetastic · 01/07/2026 21:32

So you expect some people to lose a day's pay so you can spend the day in bed after staying up to watch the match? 🤐

Noce · 01/07/2026 21:33

No idea why they gave it in Scotland, most people didn’t get the day off: except in some regions all the schools got the day off giving parents a bloody nightmare
