To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

They don't have to honour any Bank Holidays

But if you work for the civil service like me, you get them off regardless, When working in retail, you were given an allowance to book them off. Those colleagues who didn't work Mondays, got less allowance as most BHs are on Mondays

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 03/07/2026 21:07

YABU. I love the football and will get up to watch it, then go to work in the morning. But a bank holiday will cost me leave hours and I work in a busy NHS clinic so not sure people would be happy having their long awaited appointments cancelled.

abracadabra1980 · 03/07/2026 21:09

I'd only agree if we were in the final. Also re Bank Holidays in general, I think it's ridiculous having two in May-One should be moved to St George's Day.

But then it would be near Easter. It would probably be better moving one to coincide with October half term.

Anyway it looks like the match will be at 7pm UK time on Sunday now (noon in Mexico City).

Tryingtokeepgoing · 03/07/2026 21:39

As they’ve moved the match forward, will Mr Starmer be able to do one last ‘U’ turn and cancel the late opening of pubs. Seems a bit pointless being able to open until 5am if it’s all over by 10pm 😂

Amd then there would be three in April!

So would you rather we got rid of all bank holidays so you don't have to pay your employees for them?

No. We already pay them. We factor it in to our costs. We don’t factor in an extra day because an imbecile on Mumsnet who clearly doesn’t have those costs thinks we should.
I ask you again - are you happy to cover those costs?

No of course not, the owner of the business must pay them.

Bank holidays used to constantly fuck up my husband's chemo schedule. Do you realise how many medical appointments/surgeries would be cancelled if you just chucked an extra bank holiday out there on a whim? Do you think that's less important than a game of football?!

OonaStubbs · 03/07/2026 23:48

Well it doesn't matter now anyway because the game has been moved to early evening.

No it hasn’t. It’s at the original time. Just been confirmed

Well it doesn't look like the bank holiday will be happening, which is a shame. Hopefully people will still be able to watch and enjoy the match even if they have to get up for work later that morning.

As grown ups it’s for them to decide when to watch so not to affect their jobs.

The fact that schools are having to bribe kids to attend school is pathetic. There is a school near us offering ice cream to the first 100 kids to turn up.

It’s a football match. Get over it. Fingers crossed if we get knocked out, we can get back to normal.

I am the owner of the business along with my DH. I also work full time and will not be getting a day off. So I should pay people to take a day off? Give them money out of my pocket so they can do bugger all and our business will produce nothing? How sustainable is that? Its literally taking money from my family by doing that. You really are quite dim.

Our Bank Holidays are set in stone. You can see years in advance where they fall.
So not sure why your medical team could not do the same.
Very occasionally we get an extra one. But it’s very rare.

No! I have clients that need me. Also Self employed and if a BH is declared I’ll lose a whole day of pay!

If you are self employed you can carry on working? I would for sure. You can take a day off when you really want to…

They don’t actually deserve to be in the stage they are bunch over over hyped over paid pre Madonna’s! You clearly have that mind set that the English football team are the best of the best.. they really aren’t even if they do win they’ve played pretty shite so far so you can’t justify or sugar coat it darling!! Watch that head of yours doesn’t swell to much now!

Most people support England because they are English.

And it's "prima-donnas", not "Pre Madonna's".

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Its a football match, nothing to get excited about. If a person wants to choose a bunch of men chasing a ball around a field, over their jobs, then more fool them.

Actually yes English people support England, that’s if you are genuinely English.
Look at your spelling. Looks like you are struggling with basic English.

No, many people don’t give a toss about football. I’m English and can’t wait for them to be knocked out. Im so fucking bored of the way the country treats it like it matters.

As for a PP saying that people can’t possibly be expected to go to work afterwards - I seriously despair.

I have stayed up for various events and there are ways of doing it. It’s pathetic to expect the country to stop because some overpaid bellends are doing their jobs.
