To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 20:16

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

For a football match 😂 I don’t know anyone who has any interest in it.

Most people support England because they are English.

And it's "prima-donnas", not "Pre Madonna's".

Actually it is ‘prima donnas’ - it’s not hyphenated, I find it is always worth checking before correcting someone so as not to look a bit of an arse,

Should that have been a full stop after arse?

I’m recovering from an eye operation and typing without my glasses on. Hope that helps.

i don’t need help. You should probably stop telling people to check their posts until you’re better though.

It’s a game. Watch it on catch up.

Alternatively I can ignore your suggestion. Because telling people not to post isn’t the best look either. 😊

Or in fact a normal person who doesn’t feel the need for the country to fall apart because of a game?

ethelredonagoodday · Yesterday 12:41

I think lots of people in this country assume that everyone loves football. I couldn’t give a shiney shite about it!

janj52301 · Yesterday 12:44

Stupid idea, how are all the dental, GP, hospital appointments going to be cancelled, or do those all go ahead so millions of NHS workers won't get a bank holiday?

Was just a friendly reminder that it’s worth checking your posts whilst correcting others. ☺️

Everyone I know will be watching the match. I find it hard to believe that anyone would purposely miss what could be history in the making.

I like football but there’s no way I’m staying up for a match that starts at 1am. I don’t know anyone who is going to watch it. Both my parents are football mad and they’re not watching it either. My DH finds football very boring and won’t even watch it if it’s on at a sensible time.

No-one in our family (including extended family) will be watching it as no-one has any interest in football whatsoever.
Some follow cricket, tennis, motosport etc but football .... not a single person.

Similar to when I was working.
Some in the office (M&F) would watch it (a couple fanatically) but for the majority it was of little or no interest.

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 14:22

If we get to the final ha ha that's not going to happen, I could see the point. But not for a match in the middle of the competition.

Seriously? So do you think that everyone in the country will be watching some mid tournament match?

I won’t be watching that match or any other (even if the worst happens and they are in the final). Any event that causes domestic violence to increase is not something I want to engage with.

Then you won’t be doing much. Because just about any event can spark a morons violence.

You must have worked in a very dull office.
My daughter works in the City. It’s buzzing and she said most people are engaging with the football.
I work in a school and the enthusiasm in the students is infectious.
Poor you.

I think by now we know it was just a suggestion by the Op and there is no Bank Holiday. So you can safely calm down.

Use annual leave to get a day off work and let your kids watch it on catch up.

Were you intending to say something after arse?

Mumwithagreenhouse · Yesterday 15:20

This must be rage bait, surely? You do realise that most of us genuinely couldn’t give a toss whether England win the ‘World Cup’ or not, right? Besides, there’s enough annoying, disruptive bank holidays as it is! Some of us have things to do that we couldn’t do, if everywhere is closed!
It also gives crappy online retailers & private sellers the perfect excuse to delay dispatching parcels by countless days on account of a ‘bank holiday backlog’ 🙄

How exactly is this match history in the making?

LilyBunch25 · Yesterday 16:34

Well this thread quickly descended into petty nitpicking.

Boomer55 · Yesterday 16:35

No. It’s not a semi or a final. Bank holidays cost a fortune. I love football, but let’s see if we get past Mexico first.
