Sandals and crusty feet at work

AIBU to think that walking sandals and flip flops are not professional workwear? Yes, it’s been ridiculously hot, but I don’t want to see brittle yellow toenails, crusty dry skin and, in one case, flakes and chunks of skin hanging off the manky trotters of my colleagues 🤮 At the very least, if we are going to be subjected to your toe cleavage, have a pedicure first. And don’t get me started on the smelly ones!

I hope you have considered the health and safety aspect.

What if you tread on a staple?

We don’t tend to use staples. We’re paper free. But if there was a staple on the floor it would be stopped by the sole of my sandal

I’ve been in this job for 8 years and have never had to worry about this.

I'm glad our office has a no open toes policy.

Me too 😁

But it’s not about a pedicure as such. Just basic care, looking after feet and toenails. And toenails don’t need to be painted either. As simple as using a foot stone thingy before you turn the shower on, nail brush with soap, keep toenails short and slop on any moisturiser before you brush your teeth. It’s just about being clean. Similar to someone walking around with dirty un brushed hair. Or dirty hand nails. It’s repulsive and basic hygiene.

As for open toes footwear at work, it does look unprofessional and it is a health and safety risk as well. Especially as there are plenty of alternatives options suitable for hot weather.

I wear sandals in the office, and I've been on more H&S courses than you could possibly imagine. They're far more sensible than heels (which are actually forbidden) It's a relief to take off my steel mid soles & toe cap shoes & thick socks and put the sandals on when I've been on site.

Searchingforliberty · Today 00:20

This is pretty normal in hot countries. Ridiculous in my opinion to cover up. Should I wear tights in hot weather because my spider veins and thick ankles offend you? A winter hat because you don't like dry skin on my ears? What about the acne on my neck - poloneck in the summer for me?

Bikenutz · Today 00:22

OP, you are a weirdo for staring at your colleague’s feet. Go do some filing or something 😂

cherieamore · Today 00:53

Tbh this post has really put me off wearing open toe sandals anywhere! I have eczema on my feet (and hands unfortunately) and even though it is mostly under control I still struggle with cracked heels and occasionally flaky skin. I’m very self conscious showing my feet but hoped that if I did it wouldn’t affect others. Although I definitely wouldn’t wear open toe sandals to work for this reason. I just end up feeling uncomfortable in covered up footwear!

I don't see why people shouldn't be able to wear sandals jist because they don't have pretty feet.

There's a difference between pretty/ugly and groomed/unkempt though, right?

My feet are pretty hideous. They're big and wide and I have long nobbly toes like ET's fingers. But I keep the nails clean and neat, and the dry skin under control while it's sandal weather. It's hardly a frequent or time consuming chore.

Ignore the feet-haters on here! I have a tendency to eczema too - & cracked heels. For the latter my chiropodist recommended CCS Swedish foot cream - it has a higher % of urea in it than others, which is what works on hard/dry skin (don't worry, it smells nice!). It's really brilliant. I use it on my dry elbows too.

I wear Chanel nail polish, my feet are clean & moisturised, & I have lots of pairs of lovely sandals. I am not covering up my feet in hot summer weather!

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · Today 06:48

I’d just not look at their feet.
I don’t think my discomfort trumps others’ discomfort.

TakeThatAndParty81 · Today 06:51

I never got this not wearing sandals to work… as long as they’re smart what’s the big deal?

straighttola · Today 06:53

My new work shoes are Birkenstock milanos. I don’t see any issues

OMG another thing for women to torture themselves about
grey hair
upper arms
shoulders
armpits
hair anywhere other than on the head
faces that are as nature intended
bodies that are too fat/too thin/too muscular/not muscular enough
teeth a shade away from brilliant white
skin more aged than a 16 year olds

are the men worrying about this or is it sufficient for them to be clean and tidy?
their clothing, comfortable and unremarkable?

we do not have to collude in our own oppression! be grateful if you have a body that works and is pain free! we are not put on this earth to measure up to some arbitrary and oppressive set of rules for our appearance!

This 👏👏

CantSayThisToAnyoneElse · Today 06:58

I don't think my feet are particularly attractive due to running. I am never going to get a gig modelling them, but I keep them in tip top condition.

Whenever I go for a pedicure (gel about every 8 weeks) I always noticed extremely glammed up people (eyelashes, lip fillers, botox, a lot of effort put into clothes) but then their feet need a major intervention. The poor technician has to spend half an hour with the blade getting off the parmesan rind.

It is really not hard. Use a Footner or Boots equivalent (better than Footner), a foot file, and some cream.

Cheesy feet are absolute minging.

Summer feet are made in winter. I read that here!

MeridaBrave · Today 07:00

It’s a no to sandals at all regardless of what your feet are like. Clean white trainers are ok in less formal settings, sandals are not ok.

Agree

doesn’t need to be a pedicure etc

but if have polish then to be nice

there is no need for chipped on /off or really outgrown polish or long dirty nails

whether toes or fingers

Not everyone is the time or money for weekly pedicures

You definitely don’t need a professional pedicure to resolve this. A good foot cream and foot file works wonders… I get dry skin because I’m a long distance runner so I just file it away whenever I spot it and I use scholl foot cream.

Agree with you to an extent OP. I did wear dr marten sandals last week but I do have nicely painted nails and no dry skin if that helps.

suburburban · Today 07:08

I always wear sandals to work in the Summer, my feet are clean and pedicured plus it’s good for my feet not to be wearing shoes, never going to change

no one mentioned women?!!! MEN have manky feet and wear sandals just as much as women

Rubyslipperswitch · Today 07:17

I don't think flip flops are suitable for workplaces but beyond that sandals are perfectly fine in the hot weather.

I have eczema on my hands too. I suppose OP thinks we should wear gloves all the time.

Wear the sandals, don't make your skin worse because of other people's ignorance

RampantIvy · Today 07:20

What is it with the ingenuous "don't look then" posts on threads like this?

It is unavoidable seeing people in any sort of clothes or footwear that stand out from the norm, or even those that don't. We can't go around with our eyes closed all the time.

It's such a silly comment.

Worldcuproadshow · Today 07:24

I wear fisherman sandals to work and so far haven't been pulled up by management. They're smart enough to see clients and for back office work as well as keeping my feet cool.

I wash, prep and moisturise my feet daily so there's no danger of them scaring my colleagues.

I have both of these pairs so I can alternate between outfits:
