I really enjoyed the thread started by @openthefrontdoorthe other week which was a different take on those boring threads where someone posted a photo.

So I thought I’d start one myself. Not sure I’ll be quite as eloquent but I’ll give it my best shot to drop some random facts

  1. Growing up, my dad was clean shaven but for a most fantastic bushy moustache which he took great pride in.

  2. Our 1 tv in the house through most of my early years was rented from Radio Rentals and had a wire on the tv remote connecting it.

  3. My most treasured Christmas present ever was a Tiny Tears doll that could cry and wet herself

The house price has thrown me too. Every thing else fits with a 70's baby but I bought my first house in the south east for £34,000 in 1986.

Edited

Bought my first house in 1986 too - £41,000.in cheap part of London. So maybe closer to 40?

FunkyFringe · 28/06/2026 10:58

I'm 61 and the only thing I have in common with you is watching The Generation Game. I think you're quite a bit younger than me.

  1. Definitely an 80s kid.
NancyMeyers · 28/06/2026 11:04

Did you have a family car growing up? If so which one? That would be a give away possibly.

My parents bought a Vauxhall viva from my grandma when I was little. I have vague memories of my dad driving it and me sitting int he middle at the back with no car seat or seat belt, leaning over him while he drove.
But the car I most remember as our first family car that we got from nearly new was a bright blue Ford escort

Our first car was a light blue Ford Escort too! I was 8 years old, there was such excitement!!

Well, this is confusing. The wired tv remote suggests late fifties or sixties, but the NatWest piggy bank would indicate that you were a child in the eighties, which is consistent with your parents house price. Tiny Tears is no help at all as they have been available for decades.
I’m going to say you are 47 OP.

  1. Saturday nights were family nights with tv dinners and watching The Generation Game with Bruce Forsyth

I think Bruce Forsyth's programme for me was The Price is Right so you're a bit older than me.

But Wikipedia tell me BF's Generation Game came back later so maybe not...

I am 47 and I remember a tv that had no remote, you had to cross the room to change the channel. We never had a wired remote, went straight to wireless remote at some point.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/06/2026 11:20
