If you had to lose a stone how would you go about it?

Have a stone I would like to lose. In no particular rush but it just has me feeling gross. I haven’t been on a diet in ages. So much contradictory info. Some say fast - others say this stresses the body. Same with walking but a friend said don’t bother the calories lost is not worth it.

id love any advice as i really dont know which path is best

Iceland slimming world meals (5 for £20) for my main meal mon to fri.

These meals look neither healthy nor filling. They seem heavy in carbohydrates and lacking in protein and - especially - fibre.

For 400 calories you could have half a chicken breast or a salmon fillet, plus some vegetables and a fair-sized salad.

A lot of the slimming world meals are based on chicken and veg and are not carb based at all.

I've lost half a stone since I couldn't fit into a frock on the 18th of May.

Calorie counting. Aimed for 1200(I'm short). I weight train anyway that didn't change. Tried to go lower calories some says when I was less hungry. No sugary carbs just a few crackers. I'm a bit of a hummus fiend, started keeping it in the freezer and using more sparingly, switched to salsa.

But aren't they processed foods full of additives and probably high in salt too?

I tend to batch cook chicken portions which last me three days and if not using fresh veg, then I microwave frozen (Brussel sprouts; French beans, etc). But I love fresh broccoli, spinach.

Even the dullest vegetables can by livened up with a Lemon, Ginger & Garlic dressing (+ Dijon mustard, honey, & Olive oil - all into the blender).

I love a good Celeriac remoulade... Don't get me started on the joys of capers!

I tend to batch cook for the week on Sunday mornings.

I did - mounjaro. I didn’t lie, my weight was just in the overweight range.

I agree.

In any case, I can’t believe that a meal that costs £4 can consist of quality ingredients, particularly if one factors in the cost of manufacture, distribution, shop costs and profit margin.

Possibly. Interestingly though, all the frozen SW meals have the recipe provided so people can choose to make themselves.

Well done!
my weight is shifting again now.
Planning meals and hitting protein targets seem to be making the difference 🤞🏻

If you are interested in finding out more about how sugar affects our metabolism, @beeble347 I would highly recommend Dr Mark Hyman’s The Blood Sugar Solution. He not only explains the physiology of glucose metabolism in layman’s terms, but also shows how the food industry has managed to hide sugar in so many processed and ultra-processed foods.

Sugar, in all its many forms, makes (crap) foods more palatable and thus more addictive. For the same reason, substituting artificial sweeteners has the same effect - plus it allows manufacturers to plaster ‘low sugar’ on their ultra-processed garbage masquerading as food.

I know from personal experience that getting used to non-sweetened foods reduces cravings for all kinds of refined carbohydrates, not just UPFs.

Thank you, I will check it out! I was amazed how quickly my body changed tbh. Have just had a creme brulee this evening so I've definitely fallen off the no sugar wagon but I'm finding the coeliac transition quite tough! I will read though and maybe go back to mostly no sugar, it did really change how I thought about food, drinks, snacks etc.

Have you thought about patenting that? You could make a fortune.

It's exactly what I do.... Most diets and systems are just a fancy way of achieving it

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 23:48

By cutting back on carbs. Up the protein and vegetables. Some days I have an almost carb free day I just have fish and vegetables and it fills me up. There are some carbs in the vegetables but very few. Drink plenty of plain water. Try to do exercise. Even walking will help and stretching exercises too to tighten up and tone.

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 23:56

Whataflippincircus · 27/06/2026 23:58

My go to diet plan is to cut right back on carbs and increase my protein. I eat a lot of fish, chicken and eggs.

Yes I like to eat salmon, chicken breast and carrots, peas and swede. I cook food in air fryer too so no added fat involved.

canuckup · 01/07/2026 02:19

Low carb, no alcohol, no more than about 1300 cals per day

I'm 5'5, and 44

canuckup · 01/07/2026 02:21

Food plan:

3 egg omelette, maybe with spinach and smoked salmon

Lunch: 'big' salad, lots of protein

Dinner: steak/chicken/pork in the BBQ, veggies, baked potato or baked sweet potato

Lots of water, black coffee.

BleedinglyObvious · 01/07/2026 09:09

I don't diet but years ago when 'no carbs' and '16:8' weren't a thing I stopped eating the sort of standard UK food.

Stopped having cereal for breakfast, had something like scrambled egg on toast instead.
Ate a proper lunch - lots of veg, some protein and a little fat.
Stopped the evening meal. No big bowl of pasta or carby suppers, no eating ready-meals, take-aways or pub meals etc. Something light if hungry.

I found I wasn't reaching for snacks//biscuits mid-morning or mid-afternoon, and not raiding the biscuit barrel/crisps in the evening.

My weight doesn't fluctuate and I'm happy with what I eat.
If I pig out, I cut back for a few days.

It is so much better than the misery and deprivation of the diet trap.

Exercise helps a lot in that it just makes you healthier. Just a 10 mins or 20 mins walk is better than none.

YourKonstantine · 01/07/2026 09:11

Lost 2.5 stone. MFP and walking.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 01/07/2026 21:06

I've lost a stone since February (I know, it's been slow and steady!) by drastically reducing ultra processed foods. I read 'Ultra processed people' and it inspired me to cut right down on nasties. I do still eat the occasional ready meal or ice cream or whatever but I'm so much more conscious of what I'm ingesting now. I get a kick out of making healthier choices.

I'm not counting calories or working out or anything. I'm about 16lbs down and have dropped from a tight size 16 to a comfortable 14.

MaryBeardsShoes · 01/07/2026 21:17

I halve what I want. So say I want two slices of toast, I just have one. Or I want 4 biscuits, I just have 2. Other than fruit/veg. It works for me. I get to eat what I want, just less of it.

Also, I know people say exercise is pointless but it works for me - increases the calorie deficit.

Suebae · 06/07/2026 19:04

I would join a slimming world group with a friend and i would stick to my slimming world plan with my friend. i would join a gym with a friend and workout at the gym with a friend and i would get a friend to go on regular early morning long distance walking with me. I would do my food shopping in the supermarket with my friend and i would cook my meals with my friend on whatsapp video. Losing weight with a friend makes it easier to enjoy losing the weight and it makes it easier to stick to as well. Wishing you every success in your weightloss journey.
