If you had to lose a stone how would you go about it?

Have a stone I would like to lose. In no particular rush but it just has me feeling gross. I haven’t been on a diet in ages. So much contradictory info. Some say fast - others say this stresses the body. Same with walking but a friend said don’t bother the calories lost is not worth it.

id love any advice as i really dont know which path is best

Walking is a waste of time and effort.

No walking is not a waste of time and effort - IF it is done consistently, at a fair pace and at least 20-30 minutes a day.

Efficiency can be improved by wearing a weighted vest and/or ankle and wrist weights.

LoudMoose · 27/06/2026 17:31

I restricted my calories to 1,680 a day and started running- only 1 mile at first. I lost just over a stone in 4 months. I’m now 11lb from my target, but weight has been the same for around 3 weeks.

It has been a slow, frustrating and quite miserable process.

ChicGreyZebra · 27/06/2026 17:34

Low carb and intermittent fasting - it’ll just fall off!

TheJoyousHiker · 27/06/2026 17:36

Walking is absolutely worth it - you can burn 250/300 calories with an hour of walking.

But the best is cutting back on what you eat and making better food choices. You can't out-run a bad diet.

Macmeme · 27/06/2026 17:38

So it took me a year to loose my first stone.... i did intermittent fasting, lots of protein etc.

Ive lost 4 lb in 8 days since deciding that husband and I are divorcing (pretty big horrid revelation from him. Obviously it's different circumstances and I wouldnt recommend just to loose weight but basically am eating 2 small meals per day, cant really be bothered to cook so am eating am omelette or beaded chicken wrap as one meal and overnight oats for another x

O also added consistent weight training in (only 2 or 3 half hour sessions a week) nd noticed that made a difference
Anyway good luck.

Firstly, when you say you’d like to lose a stone, do you know your current BMI? Going from a bmi of 27+ will be more straightforward than a bmi of 21 to lose a stone.

The main thing is something that you are actually able to stick to and be consistent with. That looks different for everyone. For me it’s low carb/fasting combo. The low carb is key as carbs trigger binges and hunger for me, that lead to consuming more calories than needed.

Drink 2/3 litres of water a day consistently. Don’t waste your calories on drinks.

I’m a size 10/12. 137 pounds. 5 ft 4. Would love to be a tad leaner.

Don’t eat after 7pm.
No snacks.
Have a big lunch and a smaller dinner, add plenty of veggies.

Beamsss · 27/06/2026 17:45

I've lost 10llbs (slowly) by making an effort to be more active, just things like walking instead of the car and making a proper effort with the garden this year.

And by pushing breakfast to 10:30/11am, fruit and plain greek yogurt for a snack/lunch mid afternoon and an early dinner no later than 6:30pm. No other snacks and absolutely nothing after dinner because it's this time that if I start snacking I won't stop.

It's been surprsingly easy to stick to once in the routine, and the extra activity helps because it eats into snacking time.

KvotheTheBloodless · 27/06/2026 17:50

I'd do an 1000 kcal/day calorie deficit, and count all my calories using My Fitness Pal. Boring, but it works. 2 lb per week, so 7 weeks to lose a stone.

dailychallenge · 27/06/2026 17:26

How do you lie? I thought it was by online appointments etc?

OP, calorie counting but if you’ve not a lot to shift, it can be really hard

Lying by saying the weight has been lost via diet and exercise.

However, people still need to exercise and learn healthy habits mounjaro or not.

langnebmydear · 27/06/2026 17:58

Low carb always does it for me.

permanently · 27/06/2026 17:58

Vegan 28 day detox. No alcohol, caffeine etc. You will drop a dress size. Decide it you want to keep it going afterwards will occasional breaks. No more food noise and you’ll look amazing.

ToffeeCrabApple · 27/06/2026 18:01

This really depends on age &starting weight.

At age 31 i could drop a stone in 6-8 weeks easily by cutting out booze & sugary treats, running 3-5km 3 times a week, and making some healthier substitutions at meal times - less fatty meats like pork & lamb, more turkey & fish, brown carbs instead of white and a bit of sensible portion control.

At age 41? Despite being 2 stone heavier & drinking far less to start with, its much, much harder. I'm perimenopausal, have lost muscle & struggling to regain it. I've tried every diet under the sun & can only ever shift about 5lbs and can't keep it off unless i restrict calories to under 1000 a day forever, even with tailored exercise regimes. Most of the time even if I do lose weight I cant get it off my stomach, which was flat as a pancake until i was 38, even after two pregnancies.

I have so much less energy & find that prolonged dieting makes me feel lacklustre. It takes all the joy out of life

Gardeningsideeffects · 27/06/2026 18:04

1200 cals. 7 weeks. Tough but doable.

Works for me.

SunnySunnyDayz · 27/06/2026 18:04

Depends on whether you are overweight and if so why.

The reason lots of people recommend lots of ways us because they all work and whats easiest depends on you..

When I felt deprived if I couldn't eat I'd do low carb. When I needed strict rules I'd do one meal a day. When I had been a glutton I'd do 3 sensible meals a day.

Now I'm 50 nothing works, I've been so strict and what would previously get rid of a stone in a month does nothing. I'm on low dose wegovy and eating more than I was on my diets, lost a stone in 6 weeks.

ACynicalDad · 27/06/2026 18:09

I loose a stone every spring and put it back on every winter, the difference is that I seat loads of salad in summer and loads of sandwiches in winter. I think exercise goes up a bit, but mainly it's the calories in for me.

Kitchenbattle · 27/06/2026 18:10

I’ve gone from pretty much 10stone (63kg) to just over 9st (57.6kg) in two weeks by doing 15:8 and eating minimum carbs. Now I will say that was never my intention, I started because I was feeling shitty and I have been diagnosed coeliac. But I feel a MILLION times better eating this way. I literally only eat two meals. A big brunch at 10am and then dinner between 5-6pm.

I’m 41 and 5ft 2. I have an office job and do light exercise 3times a week and walk 1-2 times a week.

parachutegirl · 27/06/2026 18:10

I’d download a food tracking app and log everything that passes my lips.

It’s the only thing that works for me - I exercise lots anyway and eat well but it’s all the extra bits you don’t think about that add up.

Food wise I just stick to as unprocessed as possible - I prep salad stuff so it’s in the fridge, make things like low fat curries/chilli with loads of veg and have it available in the freezer. Just basically make sure there’s stuff I can have when I’m peckish. Don’t buy crap to have in the cupboards.

Your friend saying don’t bother walking is talking shite - in terms of making you lose weight - no you can’t outwalk a bad diet but it’s healthy to exercise and better than sitting on your arse. Weights are good too.

Valpolichella · 27/06/2026 18:15

You are slim already. So you need to track your calories accurately. Focus on protein (you can get a free macro check on Macros inc on FB, that will give you the macros you need to aim for). Get your steps in and lift weights at least 3 times a week. Avoid alcohol.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 27/06/2026 18:15

MJ.

Lost 2.5 stone since October alongside healthy eating. Am 61 and menopause was a bitch adding an extra stone. For the last 10 odd years I’ve been trying and failing to lose weight.

MJ all the way.

Examtime · 27/06/2026 18:18

i just eat fruit and drink lots of water all day and then have one normal meal for dinner. Only drink alcohol at special events out of the house. I travel quite a bit for my job though and there’s a lot of client and staff entertaining which makes it hard. Menopause also adds to the difficulty.

somanychristmaslights · 27/06/2026 18:24

It’s actually very simple steps:
• eat in a calorie deficit. A simple calculation is 12x target weight in lbs = daily calorie intake (x10 if you’re around 5ft).
• aim for 10,000 steps. It’s not a magic number but the more you move, the more calories you burn. It all adds up!!
• strength train at least x 3 a week.
• eat a good amount of protein. 0.7g-1g for every lb target weight eg target weight 150lbs then eat 150- 105g protein a day.
• drink plenty of water (pee should be pale lemonade colour)
• get plenty of sleep.

ohyesido · 27/06/2026 18:24

Intermittent fasting. Eat only between 12pm and 8pm. Water calms the rumbling tummy.

JaceLancs · 27/06/2026 18:30

Give up alcohol if you drink and all snacks
Stick to protein and fruit veg or salad at all meals
Low fat, low carb, low sugar
I don’t enjoy breakfast so have black coffee and some fruit for breakfast
Today I had a prawn salad for lunch and am having a pork chop with carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes and parsnips
If I didn’t enjoy a drink or two and eat out too much I would easily lose weight
I’m trying harder at moment as want to lose a stone by my September holiday

MyLimeGuide · 27/06/2026 18:34

Get a nice little book and do a diet diary, aim for 1lb a week, so starting say Monday, in 14 weeks you will be complete! Write calories in each page, aim for 1200 a day (1500 max is ok) try and do atleast 3 workouts a week, tick of the days etc in the diet diary and do weekly weigh ins. Good luck!
